Report: Lakers interview former Warriors coach Mark Jackson for head coach opening

Former Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson has reportedly interviewed for the Los Angeles Lakers’ opening at head coach.

While the Golden State Warriors are focusing on their second-round playoff battle with the Memphis Grizzlies, the head coaching search is heating up around the rest of the NBA.

Names with connections to the Warriors, like assistants Mike Brown, Kenny Atkinson and others, have been buzzing during the interview cycle for teams with openings at head coach.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, former Warriors head coach Mark Jackson has interviewed for the Los Angeles Lakers opening at head coach. Jackson is also considered a finalist for Sacramento Kings head coach opening, per Charania.

Via @ShamsCharania on Twitter:

Starting in 2011, Jackson spent three seasons as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, leading them to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Jackson amounted a 121-109 regular-season record.

After coaching the Warriors to a 51-win season behind breakout star Steph Curry, Jackson’s squad was eliminated from the first round of the playoffs in seven games by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Despite being fired by the Warriors in the 2014 offseason, Jackson is often credited with helping lay the foundation for the Warriors’ run to three championships. Jackson helped coach players like Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green at the start of their careers.

Along with coaching the Warriors, Jackson spent 17 seasons in the NBA as a point guard. Some of Jackson’s career highlights include earning a trip to the All-Star game in 1989, leading the NBA in assists in 1996-97 and winning Rookie of the Year in 1987-88.

Since leaving the Warriors, Jackson has returned to the broadcast booth with ESPN. After reportedly receiving multiple interviews, Jackson could be making his way back to the sideline soon.

Mark Jackson has been interviewed by Lakers for head coaching job

The Lakers are starting to interview candidates for their head coaching job, including former Warriors coach Mark Jackson.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ search for a new head coach is slowly but surely heating up.

Just days ago, it was reported that they were looking into Darvin Ham, a highly regarded assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks, as well as Adrian Griffin, an assistant for the Toronto Raptors.

Of course, L.A. also reportedly has interest in established head coaches such as Utah Jazz leader Quin Snyder, Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse, the Philadelphia 76ers’ Doc Rivers and former Portland Trail Blazers head man Terry Stotts.

Another established head coach the Lakers have been rumored to be interested in is Mark Jackson, who was at the helm of the Golden State Warriors early in the Stephen Curry era.

Multiple sources have reported that L.A. has now interviewed Jackson.

NBA insider reveals Mark Jackson’s chance of becoming coach of Lakers

Plenty of Lakers fans would love for Mark Jackson to become the team’s next head coach, but what are his chances of doing so?

Among the short list of potential candidates to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, one man who has been talked about is former NBA coach Mark Jackson.

He is reportedly someone who would get LeBron James “enthused” if he were to be hired by L.A. general manager Rob Pelinka.

However, one NBA insider feels that the former point guard likely won’t be on the Lakers’ bench next season.

Via Lakers Nation:

“While Jackson is on their list, it appears he is not yet considered to be a front runner according to NBA insider Marc Stein:

“‘Jackson is indeed on the Lakers’ list if he doesn’t get the Sacramento job, but I don’t get the sense — yet — that he has a strong chance in L.A.’

“Jackson has also interviewed with the Sacramento Kings and it sounds more likely that he lands there:

“‘ESPN’s Jackson is said to have impressed Kings owner Vivek Ranadive in the interview process to date and would appear to have his best shot at a return to an NBA bench since Golden State fired him after the 2013-14 season.'”

Jackson coached the Golden State Warriors several years ago back when Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were young and just getting started as NBA stars.

Jackson did a solid job with them, but he was fired in 2014, reportedly because he had trouble getting along with people in the organization.

The very next season, his successor, Steve Kerr, made the Warriors into the best version of themselves and coached them all the way to the first of three NBA championships.

Since leaving the Warriors, Jackson has been a color commentator for NBA telecasts on ABC and ESPN.

Shaquille O’Neal has clear coaching preference for Lakers

Shaquille O’Neal thinks one man is clearly the best candidate to become the Lakers’ next head coach.

For the Los Angeles Lakers, picking the right head coach to succeed Frank Vogel will be of paramount importance, as it will help dictate all other decisions they make this offseason.

Several candidates have emerged, and observers are somewhat split on who would be the best pick.

Legendary Lakers center Shaquille O’Neal hasn’t been shy about making suggestions for his former team, and he has one specific coaching candidate in mind who he thinks is the best one.

Via Lakers Daily:

“One of those candidates is former Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson. Jackson spent three years as head coach of the Warriors and compiled a record of 121-109 during his time there.

“One former Laker who seems to be a strong proponent of Jackson is none other than Laker legend Shaquille O’Neal.

“O’Neal recently told Reuters in an exclusive interview that Jackson would be his pick to lead next year’s iteration of the Lakers.

“’Mark Jackson helped build Golden State before Steve Kerr took it to the next level,’ he said. ‘He made it a very sexy brand to watch, so I’m sure he can do that with LeBron [James] and Russ (Russell Westbrook).’”

Jackson is certainly a polarizing candidate. He does deserve some credit for starting what the Warriors have been able to build over the last several years.

In his last season with the team (2013-14), he got the Warriors to finish 51-31.

However, he was fired after they lost in seven games in the first round of the NBA playoffs to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Steve Kerr took over for him, and the very next season they won 67 games and the world championship. Clearly, Kerr has been a much better coach for Stephen Curry and crew than Jackson was.

Reportedly, a big reason why Jackson was dismissed was that he had trouble getting along with many people on the team. His extremely devout Christian faith has been cited as a culprit, as critics have said that it became a wedge that divided the Golden State locker room.

The Lakers certainly need not just a strong tactician to guide James and crew back to title contention, but also a strong voice who will unite the locker room under one vision and one mission.

Mark Jackson would be the wrong coach for the Lakers

Mark Jackson has been rumored to be a candidate for the Lakers’ coaching job, but he would not be an upgrade over Frank Vogel.

Coaching matters in the NBA, and there are plenty of examples of how the wrong coach can mess things up with the right team.

With LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and perhaps a somewhat fruitful Russell Westbrook trade, the Los Angeles Lakers could perhaps have the right team again next season.

Numerous media outlets have been talking about several candidates for the vacant head coaching job in L.A., and one choice would reportedly have James “enthused.”

That man would be Mark Jackson.

Surely, there are likely some who feel he could work wonders with the Lakers, such as TNT analyst Kenny Smith.

Via Lakers Daily:

“Mark Jackson could coach the Lakers to a championship, for sure,” Smith said.

But when one takes a closer look, it is clear that Jackson just wouldn’t cut it.

The Lakers head coaching candidate LeBron would be “enthused” about

According to a report, there is one candidate for the Lakers’ head coaching job that would excite LeBron James.

As of now, there is no shortage of candidates for the head coaching job of the Los Angeles Lakers that is now vacant.

There are many names being thrown around, including Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers, Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder and even Toronto Raptors head man Nick Nurse.

LeBron James reportedly has lots of pull within the Lakers’ organization, and whether the amount of pull he has is right or wrong, the team will need to hire someone whom James will at least accept as his new coach.

According to a prominent journalist who covers the NBA, there is one candidate who may get the four-time MVP excited.

Via The Athletic:

“And here’s a tidbit to monitor as the Lakers conduct their latest coaching search: Sources say James would be very enthused by the prospect of Mark Jackson landing the job,” wrote Sam Amick.

Jackson hasn’t coached in the NBA since 2014 when he was fired by the Golden State Warriors, who he coached for three seasons.

While he was there, they showed improvement, winning 51 games in his final season.

The very next year, under Steve Kerr, the Warriors won 67 games and the NBA championship.

Since leaving Golden State, Jackson has been a color commentator for nationally televised games on ESPN and ABC.

According to multiple reports, one of the reasons Jackson’s tenure in Golden State went awry is because, as a devout Christian and ordained minister, he had problems getting along with players on the roster who were not as devout as him.

Jackson has denied such reports.

If Lakers fans may not be as enthused as James about the possibility of Jackson getting the job, he is represented by Klutch Sports, James’ agency, and that may give him some sort of inside track on landing L.A.’s coaching job if it doesn’t land its top choices.

Draymond Green revealed how Mark Jackson gave him a stamp of approval

The former Defensive Player of the Year recently revealed how Mark Jackson helped give him a vote of confidence prior to his rookie season.

[jwplayer XROzlAnK]

Draymond Green arrived to the Golden State Warriors as the 35th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft with little to no expectations prior to the 2012-13 season. However, it was the advice given to him by then-head coach Mark Jackson that helped Green early in his career.

Green joined a team in the beginning stages of a rebuild, who broke a five-year playoff drought that season. Green logged 79 appearances as a rookie but averaged just 2.9 points in 13.4 minutes per game after sitting behind a few players on the depth chart.

Despite seeing little playing time, Green came in and instantly challenged his new teammates. In an interview with Cari Champion on “The Brownprint” podcast, Green said the advice given to him by Jackson helped boost his confidence and bring that competitiveness to the Warriors.

I also had a coach in Mark Jackson who told me from the very beginning, ‘Listen, I want you to come here as the same Draymond I’ve been watching on TV for years. I want you to be an animal, be a dog and be a leader. I don’t care who is in front of you, I don’t care who has more money than you, who has more status in the league than you — I want you to come in and be the same leader that you’ve been your whole life.’

I’m forever thankful for Mark Jackson because to hear that from your head coach as a second-round pick, it’s almost like a stamp of approval. And I think a lot of guys don’t necessarily get that coming into the league. I was very fortunate to have Mark Jackson tell me that from the very beginning.

Of course, Green became a full-time starter during the 2014-15 season when David Lee suffered a preseason injury, and the rest, as they say, is history. Green helped the Warriors to three championships while he went on to win the 2017 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

George Karl claps back at Mark Jackson after perceived insult over Carmelo Anthony defense

Was Jackson really talking about Karl?

On Thursday night, the ESPN broadcast discussed how Carmelo Anthony seems to be more bought in to playing defense for the Portland Trail Blazers than he has in the past.

Mark Jackson added, “There’s a shared responsibility for whoever allowed that defense to be played. Because, for some reason, he has bought in with this culture and he’s committed to it. This is energy and effort off of the defensive pick-up full-court.”

Notice that George Karl — who was his coach for five-plus years in Denver — wasn’t named. But if you’re Karl, I get that you might feel you’re being called out, even if Anthony went on to have other head coaches and assistants who could have had that “shared responsibility.”

Which explains why Karl tweeted this:

Fiery! Jackson replied that he wasn’t thinking about Karl at all:

Report: Jason Kidd, Mark Jackson among Nets head coach candidates

The Brooklyn Nets are developing their list of candidates for the franchise’s head coach. Among them are Jeff Van Gundy and Ty Lue.

If the NBA were to move forward with the 2019-20 season soon, Jacque Vaugh would still be the Brooklyn Nets interim head coach. He took on the position when the franchise and Kenny Atkinson mutually parted ways, and the organization stated he would remain in the role through the remainder of the season.

Nets general manager Sean Marks has expressed the team’s search for the franchise’s next permanent head coach is on hold. However, names continue to pop up in connection to Brooklyn’s head coaching position.

Among those names has been Tyronn Lue, who was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers when they won the 2016 NBA Finals — a team the featured Nets point guard Kyrie Irving.

Marc Stein of the New York Times is reporting Lue is on the Nets’ list of coaching candidates, but he’s not alone. Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy are also on the list, as is Vaughn. Another candidate: former Nets star Jason Kidd, who also coached Brooklyn in 2013-14.

Stein is also reporting the search “is not expected to hit top speed until this season is either completed or canceled.”
