Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed revealed his recruiting pitch for transfer portal visitors

Texas A&M has landed five commitments from the transfer portal, and QB Marcel Reed has been a big part of it

Texas A&M’s transfer portal success now includes five additions, including former Mississippi State wide receiver Mario Craver, who committed to the Aggies on Tuesday morning.

Beating out Alabama for Craver, a native of the state, a big part of Coach Mike Elko’s strategy has been getting current players involved. This isn’t new, as every player is tasked with showing transfer players around campus, “selling” the program and University, and how each transfer can better their playing and educational future, which is the primary goal.

On Tuesday, Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed joined Mike Elko during A&M’s pre-Las Vegas Bowl press conference. The Aggies will face USC on Friday, December 27.

Reed, who will enter the 2025 offseason as the presumed starter, was asked about his involvement in guiding past and current visitors from the portal, revealing his official pitch:

“I would start with Kyle Field. Who wouldn’t you want to play here? You dream about playing in a great atmosphere, and we have the best in the country. Then the relationships that are here at A&M… Finally, Coach Elko. He never tells a lie to you. He is straightforward.”

While Kyle Field is undoubtedly the main draw on Saturdays, Elko and his staff are slowly building a culture that has begun to reap the benefits heading into the core of the offseason, and starting with only three players opting out of the Las Vegas Bowl outside of the 19 players who have departed through the portal.

Texas A&M’s 2025 wide receiver room is built on speed and potential

Texas A&M’s 2025 WR room is as deep as it’s been in years

Texas A&M has landed five commitments from the transfer portal, led by the newest addition of former Mississippi State wide receiver Mario Cramer, who is coming off an impressive freshman season with the Bulldogs.

On Sunday, former five-star and Texas Tech wide receiver Micah Hudson announced his commitment to the program, filling out what looks like the best WR room Texas A&M has had under both Jimbo Fisher and Mike Elko, even though both new additions don’t bring in substantial on-field production.

While Hudson and Cramer will immediately compete for starting spots, the return of incoming senior Noah Thomas and sophomore Terry Bussey look like the 1-2 options on paper. At the same time, it’s important to note that five-star freshman WR Jerome Myles will not be present during the spring football season.

However, incoming sophomores Ashton Bethel-Roman and Izaiah Williams are names to watch after briefly showing off their skills during the 38-0 w win over New Mexico State. Speedster Ernest Campbell looks like the forgotten man on the roster after not seeing the field this season.

Lastly, Jerome Myles is joined by two of the faster receivers in the 2025 class. Kelshaun Johnson and TK Norman were risers toward the end of their recruitment, bringing immediate depth to a stacked rotation.

Compared to last season, OC Collin Klein’s focus on creating mismatches in the passing game should see more success with the added speed and athleticism that will pair well with the run game and set up play-action shot-downs field.

Mario Craver continues to be the name to watch. During his freshman season, he averaged 21 yards per catch, including 54, 46, and 72-yard receptions, consistently displaying his deep speed.

Incoming redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed has a lot of work ahead of him to improve after an up-and-down first season, but with these new additions to the receiving corps, Reed has plenty to work with to improve significantly next season.

Here is the current wide receiver depth chart in his current form:

  1. Noah Thomas (4-star prospect)
  2. Terry Bussey (5-star prospect)
  3. Micah Hudson (5-star prospect)
  4. Mario Craver (4-star prospect)
  5. Jerome Myles (5-star prospect)
  6. Ashton Bethel-Roman (4-star prospect)
  7. Izaiah Williams (4-star prospect)
  8. Kelshaun Johnson (4-star prospect)
  9. Ernest Johnson (4-star prospect)
  10. TK Norman (3-star prospect)

Texas A&M will host North Carolina State transfer WR this week

North Carolina State WR Kevin Concepcion is headed to College Station later this week

Texas A&M has landed two playmaking wide receivers from the transfer portal in the last three days, as former five-star and Texas Tech WR Micah Hudson announced his intentions on Sunday, while former Mississippi State freshman wideout Mario Craver announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Yet, Elko and his team are still working on expanding the wide receiver lineup for the 2025 spring roster. On Tuesday, Elko emphasized that the Aggies have no plans to stop adding talent in the coming weeks.

One name to remember is North Carolina State transfer wide receiver Kevin Concepcion, who will reportedly visit Texas A&M and Miami later this week. Earlier this month, Concepcion was scheduled to visit the Aggies before a rescheduling postponed his official visit, but On3’s Pete Nakos has now confirmed that he is headed to College Station.

In two seasons with the Wolfpack, Concepcion recorded 124 receptions, 1,299 yards, and 16 touchdowns, bringing a blend of speed and excellent route running despite dealing with quarterback issues throughout his collegiate career.

While Concepcion is a slight favorite to land with either Alabama or Colorado, this significant development could end in the Aggies landing three of the top wide receivers from the portal in the coming weeks.

Former Mississippi State wide receiver will transfer to Texas A&M

Former Mississippi State standout WR Mario Craver will transfer to Texas A&M

Texas A&M’s transfer portal success this offseason continued on Tuesday morning, as it was announced that former Mississippi State wide receiver Mario Craver will head to College Station next season and join former Texas Tech WR Micah Hudson.

On paper, Texas A&M’s 2025 wide receiver room is vastly improved, bringing more speed and run-after-catch ability to a corps in dire need of production to aid the development of quarterback Marcel Reed next season.

During Craver’s first and only collegiate season with Mississippi State, he recorded 17 receptions, 368 yards, and three touchdowns, including 21 yards per catch. With the ability to line up at all three receiver spots, Craver’s run-after-catch ability and toughness would immediately improve the Aggie receiver room.

During his first season, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko recognized the shortcomings in the position. He understood that for the offense to advance, having playmakers capable of executing short, middle, and deep passes is essential for a balanced offensive strategy that seamlessly integrates both the running and passing game.

Craver looks like a long-term option as an Aggie wide receiver as he enters his sophomore season in Aggieland.

Texas A&M is a finalist to land Mississippi State transfer WR

Texas A&M is a finalist to land transfer WR Mario Craver

Texas A&M’s transfer portal needs are well known to every Aggie fan and media member. The wide receiver room needs to be upgraded next season for the offense to take the next step under OC Collin Klein and help QB Marcel Reed develop into a true dual-threat option.

So far, coach Mike Elko and his staff have landed two commitments from the portal, starting with veteran QB Jacob Zeno and tight end Micah Riley, while several future commits are already in motion.

On Friday, former Mississippi State wide receiver Mario Craver visited Texas A&M and liked what he saw. The freshman receiver has included the Aggies in his final four transfer list, along with Alabama, LSU, and Florida State.

Texas A&M will host multiple Mississippi State transfers, including WR Mario Craver

Texas A&M will host Mississippi State transfer WR Mario Craver on Friday, and Bulldogs left tackle Makylan Pounders on Friday

Texas A&M’s transfer portal strategy under head coach Mike Elko became much more evident after the Aggies landed a commitment from veteran quarterback Jacob Zeno on Tuesday night. Focused on adding quality depth, Zeno is just the first of the many new additions to come.

We need depth and starting talent at nearly every position, but wide receiver is the most significant need. After several departures across the offensive line, depth is required to solidify the trenches in 2025.

While the visitor’s list is long, Elko and his staff will reportedly host two Mississippi State transfers, starting with wide receiver Mario Craver and Bulldogs left tackle Makylan Pounders.

Craver finished his freshman season with 17 receptions, 368 yards, and three touchdowns, including 21 yards per catch. Pounders struggled in pass protection but still possess potential as a long-term starter or key rotational player.

After receiving a prediction to land former Texas Tech wide receiver Micah Hudson, potentially gaining a commitment from a young talent like Craver would immediately upgrade the 2025 wide receiver corps.

ESPN’s Max Olson reported Craver’s Thursday visit, while On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed Pounders’s Friday visit.

SEC recruiting rankings following D’Angelo Barber’s commitment to Auburn

Auburn earned the 9th commitment of the 2024 cycle on Tuesday. How does D’Angelo Barber’s commitment affect Auburn’s recruiting ranking?

Auburn football received great news on the fourth of July, as three-star linebacker [autotag]D’Angelo Barber[/autotag] announced his commitment to the program.

His commitment is another step in the right direction for Auburn, as Barber is the No. 25 player from the state of Alabama for the 2024 cycle. Barber, a linebacker from Clay-Chalkville High School, has three other teammates who are considered to be top-25 players in the state of Alabama. Auburn is working to sway fellow Clay-Chalkville Cougar [autotag]Mario Craver[/autotag] from his Florida lean, and landing his teammate may help matters.

How much does Barber’s commitment affect Auburn’s recruiting rankings? Recruiting in the SEC experienced quite a shakeup on Tuesday, as five-star wide receiver Cam Coleman announced that he would be taking his talents to Texas A&M, spurning favorite, Auburn.

Here’s a look at the updated SEC recruiting rankings following the Independence Day holiday, as compiled by 247Sports.

Three-star LB D’Angelo Barber commits to Auburn

Barber is the No. 25 player from the state of Alabama according to 247Sports’ 2024 composite rankings.

Many people across the nation enjoyed a fireworks show on Tuesday, even Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag].

Prior to nightfall on Independence Day, Freeze received the great news that [autotag]D’Angelo Barber[/autotag], a three-star linebacker from Clay-Chalkville High School in metro Birmingham, announced that he would be committing to Auburn.

Barber did not announce publically that he had set a date to commit. However, he told Danny West of HawgSports in June that his decision would be “coming soon” following a visit to Arkansas. On Tuesday, he chose the Tigers over Arkansas and Ole Miss.

Auburn hopes that more dominoes fall following Barber’s commitment. Barber and three of his teammates from Clay-Chalkville are listed in the state of Alabama’s top 25 prospect rankings for the 2024 cycle. One of his teammates, four-star wide receiver [autotag]Mario Craver[/autotag], is one of Auburn’s top targets for the cycle.

Barber tells Christian Clemente of AuburnUndercover that the family atmosphere was a big reason for his commitment, but the bond he has built with linebackers coach Josh Aldridge is what set Auburn apart from the other two schools.

“But from the jump when they offered me, me and Coach Aldridge, we quickly started to build a relationship,” Barber said in an interview with AuburnUndercover. “We started texting every day, hop on the phone and not even talking about football, just talking and building a real, genuine relationship.”

Barber becomes Auburn’s ninth commitment for the 2024 cycle. The Tigers are now No. 48 in 247Sports 2024 recruiting rankings.

In-state WR names Auburn his leader

Mario Craver is one of the top players in Alabama and the Tigers are surging in his recruitment.

Auburn has made recruiting the state of Alabama a priority in the 2024 cycle and one of its key targets is four-star wide receiver [autotag]Mario Craver[/autotag] who is from Pinson, Alabama.

The interest is mutual. Craver recently named the Tigers the leader in his recruitment in an interview with On3’s Chad Simmons.

“Auburn is the leader right now,” he told Simmons. “I have visited Auburn three times since coach Freeze took over and things have changed. The staff is much more involved with recruiting. The old staff was tense and it was just a different feeling. It is chill now, the staff is cool and the new staff is building something new over there.”

Craver is the No. 268 overall player and No. 45 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Ranking. He is also the No. 15 player from Alabama.

One of the reasons for Auburn’s move up Craver’s leaderboard is his relationship with wide receiver coach [autotag]Marcus Davis[/autotag], who Craver talks to frequently and is able to relate to as a smaller slot receiver.

Craver checks in at 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, nearly identical to Davis, whom Auburn listed at 5-foot-9 and 176 pounds ahead of his freshman season in 2013.

He is far from the only player from Clay-Chalkville High School that Auburn is targeting. They are the favorite to land four-star linebacker De’Angelo Barber and are working to flip five-star cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe from Alabama.

Auburn is considered a ‘top school’ for local wide receiver

Following a successful stay at the Auburn Elite camp last weekend, four star WR Malcolm Simmons is strongly considering Auburn for his college home.

College football coaches everywhere want to snag the best players in every recruiting cycle. It is even a top priority to keep those who live near the university close to home.

Auburn has the chance to do that with four-star wide receiver [autotag]Malcolm Simmons[/autotag].

Simmons, who lives in nearby Alexander City, recently competed in the Auburn Elite camp alongside fellow Auburn targets [autotag]Bryce Cain[/autotag] and [autotag]Tavion Wallace[/autotag]. While there, he told Jason Caldwell of Auburn Undercover that he is strongly considering Auburn as his college home by saying that the Tigers are “going to be in his top schools.”

He also mentioned that wide receivers coach [autotag]Marcus Davis[/autotag] told him that he hopes to get the chance to coach him. However, the ball appears to be in Auburn’s court. Auburn is also going after fellow in-state wide receivers [autotag]Mario Craver[/autotag] and [autotag]Bryce Cain[/autotag], so it will all come down to their decisions.

“They are saying for the other receivers they are recruiting and for me, it’s going to be hard,” Simmons told Auburn Undercover. “They were like ‘just be patient and we’ll decide pretty soon.’”

Simmons is a talented athlete who led Benjamin Russell in both rushing and receiving yards last season and scored 19 total touchdowns. He is the state of Alabama’s No. 19 overall prospect for the 2024 cycle and is the nation’s No. 31 wide receiver.
