Manchester United have themselves a trophy

For the first time since 2017, the Red Devils have won a piece of silverware

For a club like Manchester United, six years is a long time to wait for a trophy.

But after a period of floundering, United finally appears to have put two essential pieces in place: a coach and a midfield anchor. That, along with one of the most in-form players in Europe, has made all the difference.

With Erik ten Hag, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford leading the charge, United easily ended their title drought on Sunday by defeating Newcastle 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Casemiro opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a header off Luke Shaw’s free kick delivery. Six minutes later, Rashford was on hand to score what appeared to be his 25th goal of a prolific campaign, only for the scoring to eventually be changed to a Sven Botman own goal.

Newcastle would hardly threaten the rest of the way at Wembley, as David de Gea needed to make just two saves all afternoon to notch his 181st clean sheet with Manchester United — breaking Peter Schmeichel’s all-time club record.

In Ten Hag, United appears to finally have their first post-Sir Alex manager worthy of leading the club for the long term. The Dutchman has instilled a clear style of play, a system of discipline and has helped rid the club of some of its bigger distractions.

Sunday marked the end of United’s trophy drought but it may not be the last piece of hardware the club lifts in 2022-23. They’re third in the Premier League table and still alive in the FA Cup and Europa League.

For the first time in a while, there is a real sense of optimism at Old Trafford. Now, about that ownership situation…

Marcus Rashford is rejuvenated and so is Manchester United

A few key personnel decisions and a major signing have turned things around at Old Trafford

It was pretty easy to make fun of Manchester United after two games.

The Red Devils were rock bottom after a humiliating 4-0 loss to Brentford left them with no points. Erik ten Hag’s project looked destined for failure before it even really got started.

But fast forward three weeks, and things are looking quite different for Manchester United.

United beat Arsenal 3-1 on Sunday, ending the Gunners’ perfect start and moving to within just three points of first place after a fourth consecutive win.

How has United turned it around? First off, Ten Hag made three big lineup adjustments.

Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were dumped from the starting back line, replaced by Tyrell Malacia and Raphaël Varane.

And in maybe the most significant change, Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped to the bench, with Marcus Rashford moving up top as the club’s starting forward.

Rashford has looked positively rejuvenated after the shift up top, scoring three goals, including two against Arsenal on Sunday, to come within one of his league total of four from all of last season.

Having €95 million to spare also tends to help, with new signing Antony finding the net on his debut against the Gunners to open the scoring.

“They both played great, a continual threat,” Ten Hag told Match of the Day of Rashford and Antony after the game.

“I know our offensive is really strong — they are creative and have speed. This is the first time they have played together and this performance is great to see.”

United has resources beyond the reach of almost any other club, but that has not translated into success on the field in what seems like forever. The season is still young, but Ten Hag, Rashford and Antony have optimism higher at Old Trafford than it has been for a long time.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford convinces UK government to keep children’s meal plan going

An open letter from Rashford prompted the UK government to do an about face and keep the meal plan going.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford spent the last week on a very public campaign to keep a free school meal program going over the summer, and it appears he’s scored a major victory.

The UK government at first announced that a voucher program which provides free meals for low-income students would conclude, as normal, at the end of the school year. (The program has kept up during the coronavirus pandemic, even though schools are closed.)

Rashford wrote an open letter on Sunday pleading with politicians to keep the program open during the summer, citing the fact that many parents have lost jobs due to the pandemic.

“This is not about politics; this is about humanity,” Rashford wrote. “Looking at ourselves in the mirror and feeling like we did everything we could to protect those who can’t, for whatever reason or circumstance, protect themselves. Political affiliations aside, can we not all agree that no child should be going to bed hungry?”

On Tuesday, the government said it was reversing its previous decision, and would provide £120 million in funding to keep the program going over the summer.

Rashford was delighted:

It’s a major win for the 22-year-old Manchester United star, and should show other athletes how to use their platforms to make major changes.
