UNC holds onto South Region’s top seed in latest Andy Katz bracketology

Saturday’s win over archrival Duke helped the UNC men’s basketball team tremendously. The Tar Heels are in position for good March seeding.

In just over a month, hearts will be broken, brackets will be busted, plus productivity at work and school will temporarily decrease.

All this is because of March Madness. If you ask us, it’s the greatest time of year – yes, that includes birthdays and the Holiday season.

After a 1-year hiatus in the 2022-2023 season, the UNC men’s basketball team is all but likely to make an impending return to the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels are 18-5 (10-2) overall and atop the ACC, playing like a team who could truly win a National Championship in April.

In Tuesday’s latest bracket prediction, college basketball correspondent Andy Katz has North Carolina as the South Region’s top seed.

UNC just lost by four to a cold Clemson team – one that’s now 4-6 since the calendar turned to 2024.

Every good team is expected to have off games, while struggling ones can play good ball on any given night, but it’s concerning when North Carolina also did it last week at Georgia Tech.

If the Tar Heels can somehow find a way to embark on another long winning streak – while also not losing to teams they should beat – they’ll be a lock for a top seed in March Madness.

Andy Katz has UNC facing Patriot League power in NCAA Tournament

The UNC men’s basketball team is playing like a Final Four team right now. They’re projected to face an upset-minded Colgate squad in March.

By this point in time, every college basketball team should be well into conference play.

We won’t see Rivalry Week for some time, but conferences should have an early idea of their contenders and who’ll be fighting every inch for a postseason berth.

With its mix of veteran returners, talented freshmen and clutch additions from the transfer portal, UNC has all the pieces needed to make a Final Four run. Through a week-and-a-half of January, the Tar Heels are showing they’re a serious contender in the ACC, sitting at 11-3 (3-0) with several quality wins already on their resumé.

Carolina wraps up its 3-game, ACC-opening road trip on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at rival N.C. State, before returning home against Syracuse on Saturday. As of Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. ET, UNC was tied atop the ACC with the fellow Wolfpack.

Because of their recent hot streak, the Tar Heels are projected as an East Region 2-seed in Andy Katz’ latest bracket predictions.

UNC’s projected opponent? The Colgate Raiders, who’ve won the Patriot League Tournament four of the past five years and – in 2019 – gave 2-seeded Tennessee a scare in the NCAA Tournament’s opening round.

If Carolina wants to nab that two seed, it’ll need to beat N.C. State, Duke and win the games it’s supposed to. Just because the Tar Heels are projected to nab a high seed, doesn’t mean they’ll get it or win if they do.

So far in the 2023-2024 college hoops season, though, UNC looks as good a team they’ve had since the 2017 national title run.

UNC a high seed in Andy Katz’ first bracket prediction

We’re not even into conference play yet, but March Madness predictions are already out. UNC’s men’s basketball squad is slated to return.

It’s too early to make March Madness predictions, right?

While we won’t truly tell who the tournament teams are until the New Year, the answer is – no.

In just the first month of college basketball season, we’ve seen some exciting games and blowouts. Caleb Love and Arizona came to Durham, where they took down the Blue Devils, while Kentucky has looked like the dominant power it usually is.

Through seven games in Chapel Hill, UNC looks a lot more like an NCAA Tournament team. The Tar Heels lost an overtime thriller to Villanova, but have won their other six games with relative ease. Two of those victories have come against Tennessee and Arkansas, a pair of the SEC’s better programs.

As a result of this strong, early-season play, Carolina is projected as a 3-seed in the Midwest Region of college basketball correspondent Andy Katz’ first bracket prediction.

Northern Illinois, UNC’s projected opponent, sits at 5-2 ahead of MAC (Mid-American Conference) play. The Huskies have wins against App State, Illinois Tech, Georgia State, Arkansas-Little Rock and DePaul, plus losses to Northwestern and Marquette.

The Tar Heels are coming off their biggest win of the season, holding off Tennessee by a 100-92 mark in Wednesday’s ACC-SEC Challenge. Next up for UNC is a 2 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Dec. 2 in its ACC opener against Florida State.

What makes college football the sport it is?

When you think college football, what matters? What’s great about it? What makes the game special?

They can be great games, historic teams, legendary coaches and players, the atmosphere – however you want to define this uniquely American sport.

We’ve created a Tournament of College Football Things, and we’re going to let you vote and decide what goes forward and what or who gets knocked out.

In general, we try to keep this as positive and fun as possible – yes, there are a slew of massive scandals that could be on here – so there’s just one NCAA sanction thing that makes the tournament, partially because it seems quaint by comparison to other controversies.

Go on Twitter to @ColFootballNews and vote throughout the entire process. The First Four voting is up now, and then the rest of the tournament will get started on Monday afternoon.

2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament Bracket. What Might Have Happened?

What if the 2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament went off like normal? What the bracket might have been, and what would’ve happened in each game?

What if the 2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament went off like normal? What the bracket might have been, and what would’ve happened in each game?

Let’s just pretend this whole global nightmare thing didn’t happen, and let’s just assume that the 2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament went off as normal.

Everyone is healthy, there are crowds, there are bands, everyone is playing – including Duke and Kansas – and there’s all the fun of what’s normally this most glorious time on the sports calendar.

We’re going to play this out over the next several days from the First Four right up to the national championship with our own brackets, seedings, and game outcomes.

Let’s have some fun.

We try to figure out what the best overall matchups might be, throw in games that would make geographic sense, NET Rankings, and – sorry for being boring – we go chalk on who the conference tournament champions might have been.

And then it’s Game On.

Just so there’s absolutely no confusion – of course the real NCAA Tournament is cancelled – these are all our seedings, matchups, lines, brackets and projections. Nothing about this comes from the NCAA selection committee.

The 2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament bracket might have been (trying to get it as close to the pin as possible) …
