Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens odds, picks and predictions

The Toronto Maple Leafs meet the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday in the 2024-25 season opener at Bell Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Maple Leafs won season series 3-0 in 2023-24

The Maple Leafs made the switch behind the bench, firing Sheldon Keefe, now coach with the New Jersey Devils, while adding Craig Berube. Toronto not only addressed a change in the voice from the top, but it added some much-needed defensive help with Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Chris Tanev.

The Canadiens missed the postseason in 2023-24, and they’re a good bet to be watching TV when the playoffs start next spring. Montreal did make a big splash by adding F Patrik Laine to beef up the offense, but that was the only notable addition to a roster which amassed just 76 points.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens projected goalies

Joseph Woll (12-11-1, 2.94 GAA, .907 SV% in 2023-24) vs. Sam Montembeault (16-15-9, 3.14 GAA, .903 SV% in 2023-24)

Woll didn’t face the Canadiens last season, but he did kick aside 29 of the 30 shots he faced in a 5-1 home win Feb. 18, 2023, in his last start against Montreal. He was better on the road last season than he was at home, going 6-4-0 with a 2.36 GAA and .928 SV% in 10 regular-season road outings.

Montembeault is confirmed to face the Leafs. He has a respectable 2.82 GAA and .917 SV% in 22 home starts for the Habs last season. However, he struggled mightily in his 2 starts against the Leafs, going 0-2-0 with a 4.90 GAA and .821 SV%.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

The Maple Leafs (-185) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return, and that’s a risky play in the opener, as well as when backing a team on the road.

Yes, Toronto has won 5 in a row against Montreal, but AVOID, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (+130) are a much better value laying the goal and a half.

While Toronto has won 5 in a row in this series, 2 of the victories were by a single goal last season. Still, Toronto has outscored Montreal 25-11 in the win streak. As long as Woll does a good job, and Laine doesn’t go crazy in his team debut, the Leafs are the play on the puck line.

Over/Under

The UNDER 6.5 (-105) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at best.

Montembeault really had a hard time against Toronto in 2 starts last season, and that’s why you need to be cautious with betting low. The Under actually cashed in both meetings in Montreal last season, though, and the total has gone Under in 6 of the past 9 in the series.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens open their regular seasons Tuesday at Bell Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Maple Leafs are listed among the preseason favorites to win Lord Stanley’s Cup, but in order to do that, a team needs to be able to get out of the 1st round of the playoffs.

Toronto fell in the 1st round to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 7 games last year and fell to the Montreal Canadiens in a 7-game opening round series in the 2021 postseason. The Original 6 rival has been a thorn in the side of the Leafs in recent years.

The Canadiens are 5-2 in the past 7 meetings, with the home team going 4-0 in the past 4, and the underdog going 5-2 in the past 7 in the series.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens projected goalies

Matt Murray (5-12-2, 3.05 GAA, .906 SV%, 1 SO in 2021-22 w/Ottawa) vs. Jake Allen (9-20-4, 3.30 GAA, .905 SV%, 2 SO in 2021-22)

The Leafs added both Murray and G Ilya Samsonov in a complete offesean overhaul between the pipes. Murray, a 2-time Stanley Cup champ in Pittsburgh, looks to resurrect his career with a contender.

Allen will be the full-time starter in 2022-23 with Carey Price having difficulty making his way back from knee surgery. The 32-year-old Allen was 1-1-0 with a 2.27 GAA and .948 SV% in 3 appearances vs. Toronto in 2021-22.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens picks and predictions

Prediction

Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 3

Moneyline

CANADIENS (+220) is worth a roll of the dice on home ice against the heavily-favored Maple Leafs.

Montreal has won 5 of the past 7 meetings overall despite the fact Toronto has had a much better record in the past 2 seasons. The home side is also 4-0 in the past 4 meetings, so it’s worth the risk with the heavy home ‘dog.

Puck line/Against the spread

CANADIENS +1.5 (-107) isn’t nearly as good of a value on the puck line, but it is also a strong play if you just can’t pull the trigger on the Habs straight up. The underdog is 5-2 in the past 7 in this series, and Montreal always seems to give Toronto fits.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (-125) is the best bet here, but know you’ll be going against some recent series trends.

The Under is 5-1 in the past 6 meetings, and 6-1-1 in the past 8 meetings at Bell Centre. However, Murray was awfully shaky last season in Ottawa, and Allen can also be very giving.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens Game 6 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens Game 4 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens play Game 6 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Bell Centre. Below, we analyze the Maple Leafs-Canadiens odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Maple Leafs squandered a chance to put away the Canadiens in Game 5 of their division semifinals series, and now have to hit the road for Game 6. Toronto still has two more chances for its first postseason series win since 2004.

The Canadiens will be the first Canadian team to open the turnstiles to fans allowing a maximum of 2,500 rabid, and high-paying, fans to Bell Centre as the province of Quebec eases COVID restrictions for indoor gatherings.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Maple Leafs -200 (bet $200 to win $100) | Canadiens +165 (bet $100 to win $165)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Maple Leafs -1.5 (+135) | Canadiens +1.5 (-165)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Projected starting goalies

Jack Campbell (17-3-2, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO)

Campbell finally showed some cracks in the dike in Game 5 allowing four goals on 30 shots as the Canadiens won it early in overtime in an elimination game. His last start at Bell Centre, however, was a shutout in Game 4.

Price turned aside 32 of 35 shots in Game 5 extending the season for the Habs at least one more game. Now he and his team will get a chance to play in front of a smattering of hometown fans for the first time this season.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 3

Money line (ML)

The Maple Leafs (-200) are a little on the steep side, and I am not 100 percent confident they’ll be able to turn the tables and win on Montreal’s home ice. Add in the fact that there will be fans now, albeit a small amount, and things are trending a little in the favor of Les Habitants.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The CANADIENS +1.5 (-165) roll into their home barn with the confidence of an overtime road win in Game 5, and they will welcome some of their rabid fans through the gates. After getting blanked on home ice, their response Thursday night was outstanding. If they can get that early first goal to really put the Maple Leafs -1.5 (+135) on edge, the Habs will stay in this one, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (+100) is the lean in Game 6 despite the fact the tension has been ratcheted up in this series. Normally as a series goes deeper, we see fewer scoring opportunities. Of course, in the two playoff game battles we had on Thursday the Over connected. I don’t think we get fire-wagon hockey here, but at least six goals seems like the best bet on the board.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens Game 4 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens Game 4 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens play Game 4 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Bell Centre. Below, we analyze the Maple Leafs-Canadiens odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Maple Leafs have rebounded with two consecutive victories after dropping Game 1 on home ice. That includes a 2-1 road win against the Canadiens on Monday night for their first series lead.

The Canadiens won the series opener, but they have struggled offensively with a total of just four goals across the first three games. They haven’t had a lot of success in back-to-back situations, going 1-4 in the past five with no rest.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:35 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Maple Leafs -175 (bet $175 to win $100) | Canadiens +145 (bet $100 to win $145)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Maple Leafs -1.5 (+150) | Canadiens +1.5 (-185)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Projected starting goalies

Jack Campbell (17-3-2, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO)

Campbell turned aside 28 of the 29 shots he faced in Game 3, picking up his second-career postseason victory. Both wins have been in this series. He also went 4-1-1 with a 2.16 GAA and .918 SV% in six starts against Montreal in the regular season.

Price was solid in Monday’s Game 3 loss, allowing just two goals on 29 shots. It was his third game back after a month-long absence due to a concussion, and there is a big concern with the back-to-back situation.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 2

Money line (ML)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-175) grabbed home-ice advantage back from the Canadiens (+145) in Game 3. Although with no fans in the stands, the games have been more like those in the bubble last summer than what we have seen in the United States with throngs of raucous crowds returning.

Toronto has posted nine victories in the past 13 as a favorite while Montreal has won just once in the past five in back-to-back situations. That and worries about how Price will handle himself with the quick turnaround means the Leafs is the play.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (+150) are worth a small-unit play. As mentioned, there are concerns about Price after playing so many games in a short period after a lengthy layoff. And the Canadiens +1.5 (-185) have just four total goals in three games, and that’s the biggest worry.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-105) is worth a look here. The Maple Leafs have averaged 2.7 goals per game in this series, and the Canadiens have put up 1.3 goals per game. While that doesn’t exactly scream Over, playing within 24 hours of the last game should mean some tired legs, some defensive lapses and an uptick in offense.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens Game 3 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens Game 3 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens play Game 3 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Bell Centre. Below, we analyze the Maple Leafs-Canadiens odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Maple Leafs bounced back after a stunning Game 1 loss rolling the Canadiens by a 5-1 score. Five different scorers found the back of the net picking up the slack for the injured John Tavares.

The Canadiens started out Game 2 well as Jesperi Kotkaniemi picked up the goal at 7:57 of the first period to open the scoring. It was all downhill after that as Carey Price allowed two even-strength goals and two power-play goals.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Maple Leafs -1.5 (+155) | Canadiens +1.5 (-190)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Projected starting goalies

Jack Campbell (17-3-2, 2.15 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Carey Price (12-7-5, 2.64 GAA, .901 SV%, 1 SO)

Campbell turned aside 22 of the 23 shots he faced picking up his first-ever NHL playoff victory in just his second-career postseason start. Game 2 was more like it for Campbell as he was 4-1-1 with a 2.16 GAA and .918 SV% in six starts vs. MTL in the regular season.

Price was stellar in Game 1 allowing just one goal on 36 shots in his return after a month-long absence due to concussion. He was not as good in Game 2 allowing four goals on 33 shots.

Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Maple Leafs 5, Canadiens 3

Money line (ML)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-165) stumbled in the series opener, and they were shell-shocked by the loss of Tavares. But the Leafs looked the part of favorites, or favourites as the Canadians say, in Game 2. They should keep their foot on the gas and top the Habs.

While Montreal wrestled home-ice advantage from Toronto in Game 1, without fans, home-ice advantage has been rather overrated in the two series of the North Division.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (+155) are a tempting play in Game 3 with a chance to make over one-and-a-half times your potential return. The Leafs were 3-1-1 in five trips to Montreal this season with all three wins by two or more goals. They also beat Price and the Habs twice in Montreal outscoring them 9-5.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (+100) is the lean here. The offense for the Leafs came alive in Game 2 and nearly took care of the Over themselves. The Canadiens have managed just three total goals in the first two games. So they’re definitely due for their best offensive production of the series, too.
