Russell Wilson attended the Manning Passing Academy in high school

Russell Wilson and Peyton Manning go way back — Wilson was a camper at the Manning Passing Academy when he was a high school sophomore.

Each offseason, former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and his sons — Cooper, Peyton and Eli — host the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

Before going on to play college football at NC State and Wisconsin, quarterback Russell Wilson attended the Manning passing camp when he was a young prospect at Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia.

“I got to go to a Peyton Manning camp a long time ago,” Wilson said on March 16. “I was in 10th grade, in Louisiana, and he was my quarterback coach. Him and Eli.

“I was able to learn from one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and be around them and how he talked about ball and how he saw the game. How we taught me how to do certain things and this and that. So, I was always passionate about watching him.”

Wilson later bumped into Manning at the Denver Broncos’ facility during a pre-draft visit in 2012. Denver did not draft Wilson that year, but the Broncos traded for him 10 years later, and the quarterback consulted Manning before leaving the Seattle Seahawks to land in Denver.

After having won a Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts, Manning joined the Broncos in 2012 and went on to win another title. Wilson also won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks before joining Denver and he’ll now aim to emulate Manning’s success with the Broncos.

Manning Passing Academy won’t have a camp this summer

The Manning Passing Academy has postponed its 2020 camp until 2021.

The Manning Pass Academy will not have a football camp in Louisiana this summer, Archie Manning announced on Tuesday. This year’s camp will be postponed until next summer.

“There are times during a ballgame when you have to call an audible, and I’m disappointed to say that we are going to have to call one now and postpone this year’s camp to comply with the next stage of guidelines set forth by the state and City of Thibodaux,” Archie said in a letter to participants.

“It’s a difficult decision to make as postponing the MPA affects more than just the 1,200+ campers, but also the 200+ coaches, trainers and support staff that help put on our camp. It affects local businesses, restaurants, hotels and much more.”

Athletes who signed up for the 2020 camp will have their information and payments rolled over for the 2021 camp (June 24-27). Athletes who aren’t able to attend next year can request a refund.

Peyton Manning, who won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos following the 2015 season, serves as one of the camp’s coaches. Drew Lock, Denver’s current quarterback, served as one of the camp’s counselors in 2018.
