Manhattan vs Rider Game Preview, MAAC Tournament

Why Manhattan Will Win

The Jaspers might not be consistent, but they have a way of rising up and rocking offensively from time to time.

That includes an overtime win over Rider in early February.

They don’t shoot threes and the defense is what sad looks like – for the most part. It’s been a disaster throughout the season at stopping the three, but it’s been outstanding over the last several games, holding teams to under 28% from the outside.

The key will be getting to the free throw line. The team might not shoot well overall, but no one in the MAAC gets more production on the stripe, but …

Why Rider Will Win

Manhattan is bad at shooting, and it doesn’t come up with the rebounds to make up for it.

That’s where the Broncs come in.

Rider it good on the offensive boards and great overall on the glass. It beat Manhattan the first time around when it was +6 in rebounding margin, and lost the second time when it was -5.

That second game was a blip – the Jaspers aren’t that good on the glass.

Rider generates a ton of steals, it should come up with a slew of points on the move, and …

Manhattan vs Rider: What’s Going To Happen

Rebounds.

If Rider wins the rebounding margin, it wins this without too much of a problem. That starts with making Manhattan miss, and that’s not too hard.

Look elsewhere if you desire threes, and this will get ugly at times, but the Broncs will win on the free throw line … and the boards.

No. 4 Notre Dame wins season opener 17-2

Early and often for Notre Dame on opening day!

Notre Dame’s fourth-ranked baseball team got off to a fast and furious start in the 2022 season as they obliterated Manhattan 17-2 at the Hatter Classic in Deland, Florida.

The Irish smacked the ball all over the yard as they recorded 19 hits and three home runs on the night.  A pair of triples in the bottom of the first inning from Spencer Meyers and Carter Putz got the Irish going with an early 2-0 lead.

Five more runs were scored in the third inning, highlighted by a two run home run off the bat of Brooks Coetzee III (pictured).  An inning later the floodgates were entirely opened as the Irish crossed six more runs to stretch the lead to 13-0.

Coetzee added his second home run of the game in the sixth inning while Jack Zyska hit his first career home run in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 17-0.

Aidan Tyrell started and recorded four scoreless innings for the Irish while Liam Simon provided three shutout innings in relief.

Notre Dame starts the year 1-0 with the blowout victory and their 17 runs were the most scored in a Fighting Irish season opener since putting up 18 against Florida A&M in 2005.

The Irish return to the field Saturday when they take on the host of the Hatter Classic, Stetson.
