Rutgers men’s basketball conquers Big Ten demons in win over Indiana

Rutgers men’s basketball got a big lift with a midweek win over Indiana.

On Tuesday night, Rutgers men’s basketball finally got their first Big Ten win of the season in their fourth try. Rutgers beat Indiana 66-57 as five players,Rincluding Mawot Mag, scored double figures. While Mag continued to be a scoring machine, he got help from various sources.

Along with Mag, Aundre Hyatt, Derek Simpson, Austin Williams and JaMichael Davis had at least 10 points. Hyatt’s play, in particular, stood out since he is Rutgers’s leading score. Before Tuesday’s win, he had not scored more than nine points in a game since December 30th.

As Rutgers rolled to their ninth win of the season, they were able to take care of the Hoosiers mistakes. Indiana turned the ball over 18 times, allowing 18 points off turnovers. Their largest lead of the night was seven points.

While Tuesday night didn’t go as planned for Indiana, there were still a few bright spots. That includes the talented trio of Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, and Kel’el Ware. They each scored 13 points and Ware had a big night on the boards with 13 rebounds.

With their first conference win of the season in the books, Rutgers will shift its focus to its next game against Michigan State on Saturday. Through 15 games, the Spartans are off to a 9-6 start.

Against Indiana, Rutgers men’s basketball searching for first Big Ten win of the season

Rutgers is looking to get its first Big Ten win of the season on Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, Indiana will take on a Rutgers team still looking for their first win in January. The Scarlet Knights have lost two straight games, both against Big Ten opponents. Against the Hoosiers, they have an excellent opportunity to get their first conference win of the season.

Entering this matchup, Mawot Mag is coming off the best game of his collegiate career. Against Iowa on Saturday, the talented forward scored 24 points. He was also a monster on the boards with ten rebounds.

While Mag’s play has been encouraging, Rutgers needs Clifford Omoruyi and Aundre Hyatt to step up. Omoruyi has scored less than ten points in two straight games. In that span, Hyatt has only scored 18 points and struggled from three-point range.

As the Rutgers talented duo attempts to get back on track, they will be tasked with stopping Malik Reneau and Trey Galloway. Reneau is averaging 17.3 points in his last ten games. He has gotten some help from Galloway, who is averaging a team-high 3.7 assists per game.

Although Rutgers has struggled this month, they are favored in this game by ESPN. The Hoosiers have posted a 1-1 record and only beat Ohio State by six points on Saturday. They must be at their best on Tuesday against a Rutgers team hungry for a win.

Gators hoops prospect reopens recruitment, still considers UF ‘home’

Seems like with good news always comes the swing of the pendulum in the other direction.

Not long after Florida basketball got word that former VMI point guard Trey Bonham would be joining the team through the transfer portal, effectively replacing the departing [autotag]Tyree Appleby[/autotag], it got some bad news from the recruiting front on Monday. Power forward signee [autotag]Jalen Reed[/autotag] of the 2022 prospect class announced on Twitter that he is reopening his recruitment, though has not ruled out UF as his final destination.

“2022 has brought many changes and after much consideration, I have decided to reopen my recruitment,” according to Reed’s Twitter post. “I am open to the many possibilities while still considering The University of Florida as my college home.”

The 6-foot-10-inch, 220-pound prep prospect from Castaic, California, was considered a four-star prospect in the 2022 class, sitting at No. 75 overall according to the 247Composite, while ranking as the No. 16 power forward as well as the No. 10 player in the state of California. Reed committed to the Orange and Blue in late October and officially signed during the early period in November, choosing Florida over Ole Miss, Arizona State, Maryland, and Oklahoma.

Reed is the second player from the 2022 recruiting class to have cold feet about their commitment, joining five-star prospect [autotag]Malik Reneau[/autotag], who also announced Monday that he is joining the Indiana Hoosiers. That leaves combo guard [autotag]Denzel Aberdeen[/autotag] as the lone remaining commit from the class currently planning on suiting up for [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]’s team next season.

BREAKING: 5-star PF has decommitted from Florida basketball

Not the best start to the Golden era.

Five-star power forward Malik Reneau told On3 that he has decommitted from Florida and has received his release from his letter of intent on Tuesday.

It’s not surprising that he wants to reopen his recruitment after the coaching change this offseason. Former coach Mike White now leads the Georgia Bulldogs while the Gators hired San Francisco’s Todd Golden to replace him.

Reneau was Florida’s highest-ranked commit in the 2022 class, coming in as the 29th-best overall player, according to the On3 consensus rankings. He also sits as the fifth-best at his position.

“First and foremost I want to thank the community of #GatorNation for all of the love and support they have given me,” he said in a statement. “With everything that has transpired at the University of Florida, I have decided to reopen my recruitment.”

It’s a tough blow for Golden as he tried to keep the class together, but he still has two commits left in four-star power forward Jalen Reed and three-star combo guard Denzel Aberdeen.

Before he awarded his pledge to Florida, the final group of schools he considered was Miami, Memphis and Florida State.

Florida basketball signs 3 players to complete 2022 recruiting class

Florida signed Malik Reneau, Jalen Reed and Denzel Aberdeen during the early signing period on Wednesday.

Gators men’s basketball coach Mike White is perhaps best known for his abilities as a recruiter, and he hauled in another fantastic class for the 2022 cycle as three players signed their National Letters of Intent on early signing day on Wednesday.

Headlined by power forward Malik Reneau, a five-star recruit from Montverde Academy in Florida (the same school that produced former UF players Andrew Nembhard and Omar Payne), Florida’s class ranks 19th in the nation and fourth in the SEC.

In addition to Reneau, who is the No. 25 player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite, Florida added another top-100 recruit in four-star power forward Jalen Reed (No. 89), a southern California native, and three-star combo guard Denzel Aberdeen (No. 193) from Dr. Phillips in Orlando.

This is White’s highest-ranked class since 2019 when he signed five stars Scottie Lewis and Tre Mann, as well as Payne. And it may not be done quite yet.

The Gators have quite a bit of time between now and the regular signing day on April 22, and there are several other players they are targeting that could join the class. White will look to build on what is already one of his better recruiting classes in Gainesville.

This 5-star PF signed with Florida on Early Signing Day

The future of Gators basketball looks bright after five-star Malik Reneau signed his letter of intent to play at Florida.

A day after the Florida men’s basketball team kicked off its season with a win, five-star power forward Malik Reneau signed his letter of intent to play for the Gators.

Reneau is ranked No. 25 on the 247Sports Composite list and is the centerpiece of Mike White‘s 2022 recruiting class. Florida has three seniors starting in the frontcourt, so it’s easy to see Reneau making an impact right away. He told 247Sports that he chose Florida because of the relationship he’s developed with the coaching staff, and he seems eager to get to work in Gainesville.

“Coach White has been to the NCAA tournament and been to the Sweet 16,” Reneau said. “So for me, it’s just helping get over the hump and helping coach White get that national championship. I want to go in and impact the team at a high level and help the team win basketball games.”

Another reason Reneau wanted to come to Florida was the school’s track record with players at his position. He said that White allowed “good fours to stretch the court” after observing White’s usage of Keyontae Johnson before the injury.

Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports described Reneau as “all business and fundamentals on the hardwood,” which is music to any coach’s ears. He looks to be a versatile forward for the Gators that can hurt teams from both inside and outside of the paint.

Reneau is the No. 3 ranked power forward in the country. Julian Phillips, the No. 2 ranked power forward, signed with LSU on Wednesday too. The two will be battling it out in the SEC next year.

Florida basketball picks up commitment from four-star forward

The four-star recruit is the No. 6 power forward in the 2022 class.

Florida basketball coach Mike White landed his first commitment in the 2022 recruiting class on Wednesday, and it was a big one. Four-star Montverde Academy power forward Malik Reneau, the No. 43 player in the country and No. 6 power forward according to the 247Sports Composite, announced his commitment on Twitter.

Reneau chose the Gators over offers from the likes of Florida State, Arkansas and Indiana. Here’s what 247Sports recruiting analyst Brandon Jenkins had to say in his scouting breakdown of Reneau.

Reneau is a southpaw four man with a solid build, great hands, and an equally impressive feel for the game. He is a team-oriented player who compliments those around him with his activity on the glass, inside scoring, and passing from the high to low posts. He is a decent vertical athlete who can make the occasional wow play but for the most part Reneau is all business and fundementals on the hardwood. With his great basketball IQ and ability to do whatever is needed for his team, Reneau tracks well as a high major all-purpose asset.

Though the guard play at UF under White has always been solid, from Kasey Hill to Chris Chiozza to Tre Mann, the team has struggled to find similarly impactful players in the frontcourt. When center Colin Castleton transferred in from Michigan this year, it revitalized the team’s play in the paint, both offensively and defensively.

As a strong rebounder with good inside scoring ability, Reneau is a very nice pickup for the Gators, and White will hope he’s the first cog in a stronger class than last year’s, which ranked just 78th in the nation after only signing one ranked recruit in Kowacie Reeves.
