Kaufman: ‘I have heard some whispers’ that the Celtics are still trying to trade Malcolm Brogdon

“I still believe Malcolm Brogdon is maybe not actively being dangled out there by the Celtics, but I think he is absolutely on the trade block,” said Kaufman.

The radio silence from both the Boston Celtics and point guard Malcolm Brogdon‘s camp since the trade that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Clippers collapsed has not done fans of the team any favors, with many left wondering if the ball club will start another season with internal problems to consider. A recent report from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach threw some water on the rumors, but even the Globe reporter admitted something seems “off” with the situation.

Now, CLNS Media’s Adam Kaufman has put a bit more kindling back under that source of offseason smoke, saying on a recent episode of the “Celtics Beat” podcast that he has “heard some whispers that the Celtics are still trying to trade (Brogdon).”

“I am not saying my reporting is any better than Adam Himmelsbach,” he qualified. “In fact, I will tell you the opposite — it is very much inferior to Adam Himmelsbach’s.”

“However, I had been saying for weeks, for months — ever since this trade fell apart — do not be surprised if the fallout from this situation or potential fallout still leads to Malcolm Brogdon being traded,” he added.

“I still believe that even though we’re sitting here in late September, I still believe Malcolm Brogdon is maybe not actively being dangled out there by the Celtics, but I think he is absolutely on the trade block, I firmly, firmly believe that.”

Whether Boston and Brogdon are quietly looking for a new home for the Virginia alum, in the midst of a rapprochement to heal the wounds opened by the trade attempt, or simply gearing up for a title run, we don’t have long to wait with Media Day arriving on October 2 — exactly a week from today.

Will the uncertainty surrounding Boston’s Malcolm Brogdon be resolved at Media Day?

Is Brogdon still mad, or has he moved on from the collapsed deal? And for that matter, how is the elbow doing that ultimately nixed that trade to the Clips?

The Boston Celtics and the uncertain situation surrounding veteran floor general Malcolm Brogdon has cast a bit of a pall over the Celtics’ 2023 Media Day proceedings even before they arrive.

The radio silence from the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year since the failed trade that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Clippers in the version of the deal for star Washington Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis that ultimately sent longest-tenured point guard Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies has caused concern. Is Brogdon still mad, or has he moved on from the collapsed deal? And for that matter, how is the elbow doing that ultimately nixed that trade to the Clips?

The host of the CLNS Media “Winning Plays” podcast linked up with Michael Pina of the Ringer to talk it over.

If the Boston Celtics have to trade Malcolm Brogdon, which teams make sense?

The Clippers might still be interested if Brogdon’s health is solid, but so might the Philadelphia 76ers if they do not resolve their own disgruntled guard situation.

The Boston Celtics are probably going to start the 2023-24 NBA season with the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year on their roster despite rumors veteran point guard Malcolm Brogdon might be nonplussed about a failed trade to the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this offseason.

But if that irkedness is entirely too much for both parties to deal with, the Celtics will need to find Brogdon a new ball club to play for — but which? The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” tried to wrap their heads around which teams in the league might actually make sense for Boston and the Virginia alum to target for a trade.

The Clippers might still be interested if Brogdon’s health is solid, but so might the Philadelphia 76ers if they do not resolve their own disgruntled guard situation, just to name a pair.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what other teams they came up with.

Kristaps Porzingis’ expanded game a reason for the Boston Celtics to be optimistic

“As a big man, (Kristaps Porzingis’) range could change the geometry of the floor,” writes B/R — but that’s not the only reason.

It’s easy enough to get nervous about the Boston Celtics‘ season ahead with grumbles of the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon rumored to be nonplussed with the team ahead of a critical season in terms of contention, but Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey suggests Celtics fans have plenty to be optimistic about regardless.

“As a big man, (Kristaps Porzingis’) range could change the geometry of the floor, forcing opposing rim protectors away from the paint and widening driving lanes for (Derrick) White, (Jayson) Tatum, and (Jaylen) Brown,” suggests Bailey. “We’ve known about that ability for KP for a while, though.”

“What makes him even more interesting heading into 2023-24 is an increased willingness to distribute,” suggests the B/R analyst.

“Porzingis has set career highs for assists per game in each of his last two seasons,” writes Bailey. “And while the 2.7 he averaged in 2022-23 may not sound like a ton, as a supplement to whatever the aforementioned playmakers (plus Malcolm Brogdon) bring, it can add a little extra dynamism to the offense.”

What NBA analysts are saying about the prospect of the Boston Celtics trading for Buddy Hield

At first glance, it is easy to see why so many fans of the Boston Celtics hope their team tries to trade for Indiana Pacers sharpshooting guard Buddy Hield.

At first glance, it is easy to see why so many fans of the Boston Celtics hope their team tries to trade for Indiana Pacers sharpshooting guard Buddy Hield. With rumors of the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon potentially being irked with the Celtics as well as potentially injured with a cap crunch going on as well, Hield makes all the sense in the world to swap for Brogdon.

Cheaper, healthier, and more lethal from beyond the arc, the pros are unfortunately nuked by the cons, namely the fact that a three-team deal would almost certainly be needed to pull off, immediately putting Boston out of the likely top offers as a result.

But that does not mean it is not worth trying, as is evidenced by the assessments of other NBA analysts who see the potential — even if they also see the substantial hurdles to such a trade.

What’s the state of the relationship between Malcolm Brogdon and the Boston Celtics?

While the uncertainty surrounding his future might make Brogdon less than thrilled, there’s no concrete evidence of a major rift.

The relationship between Malcolm Brogdon and the Boston Celtics has become a topic of speculation in recent times. Reports suggest Brogdon might be unhappy with how the team handled his elbow injury, which led to the Clippers backing out of an offseason trade. However, there hasn’t been much communication from either side regarding this issue, and the lack of updates has fueled rumors.

While the uncertainty surrounding his future might make Brogdon less than thrilled, there’s no concrete evidence of a major rift. It appears that everyone is waiting for media day to arrive, allowing Brogdon to express his thoughts and the Celtics’ brass to address the situation.

NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg, Amina Smith, and Trenni Casey dove into all the above on a recent episode of Arbella Early Edition. Check out their thoughts on where the Celtics stand with Brogdon in the clip embedded below.

What are the potential implications of a rift between Malcolm Brogdon and the Boston Celtics?

Brogdon, unsurprisingly, did not react well to the reports of the near-trade to L.A. and reportedly harbored resentment towards the Celtics.

Malcolm Brogdon’s relationship with the Boston Celtics appears to be on shaky ground, stemming from a failed trade deal in June. Initially, the Celtics were close to trading Brogdon to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team trade that would have brought Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards to Boston. However, the Clippers canceled the deal while the Celtics proceeded with a separate trade involving Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies centered around Porzingis.

Brogdon, unsurprisingly, did not react well to the reports of the near-trade and reportedly harbored resentment towards the Celtics per Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe.

The hosts of the Bluewire “NBA Front Office Show” recently sat down to talk over the rumored ire of the Virginia alum towards the Celtics and what it could mean for their season ahead.

Should the Boston Celtics try to trade Malcolm Brogdon for Buddy Hield?

Does it make sense to trade the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year, and would Hield make sense as a return for Brogdon?

Indiana Pacers sharpshooting guard Buddy Hield recently became available after reports surfaced that Boston Celtics reserve guard Malcolm Brogdon became angry with the Celtics following his elbow injury and near trade to the Los Angeles Clippers this offseason per ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and the Boston Globe’s Gary Washurn, respectively.

Does it make sense to trade the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year, and would Hield make sense as a return for Brogdon? The Virginia alum’s history with the Pacers could prove to be a complicating factor for any deal for Hield given he was dealt to Boston for a pittance as a preferred destination.

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning sat down to talk us through such a move for Boston, and what it could entail for both teams.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear all the relevant info regarding a potential Brogdon – Hield swap.

Should the Boston Celtics have considered trading Malcolm Brogdon for Tyus Jones?

One NBA analyst thinks it was among the best potential offseason deals that never happened.

The 2023 NBA offseason was a whirlwind of activity, with several notable trades and signings taking place. However, there were still some potential deals that could have added even more excitement to the offseason according to Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, including one trade proposal involving the Boston Celtics.

Per Buckley, the Celtics should have traded 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon for Washington Wizards point guard Tyus Jones and shooting guard Ryan Rollins. Citing Brogdon’s lingering ire with Boston and his generally poor availability, the B/R analyst suggests that “Jones may have been the better choice” if ever there was an option to pick between the pair.

“A team looking to up its playmaking and offensive organization would surely be blown away by the canyon sitting between Jones’ career 2,108 assists and 400 turnovers,” offers Buckley. “Upping his appeal is the fact he’s become more of a scoring and shooting threat in recent years.”

“Since the start of the 2019-20 season, he has averaged a solid 14.4 points per 36 minutes while shooting 36.9% from 3,” he adds. “Boston could have gotten serious mileage out of Jones, and the Celtics could have given Rollins a chance to carve out a niche on the perimeter.”

“As for Washington, the incoming first-round pick would’ve mattered more than any of the players involved. The Wizards also could have looked to effectively extract more assets out of this deal by shopping Brogdon around to win-now buyers.”

Would trading for Miami Heat wing Tyler Herro make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Such a move would likely involve a three-team deal — possibly as part of a package for another disgruntled floor general, Damian Lillard.

If there is fire to the smoke around 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon being irked by the Boston Celtics and a move is needed to set things right, would trading for Miami Heat wing Tyler Herro make sense for the Celtics to inquire after?

Such a move would likely involve a three-team deal — possibly as part of a package for another disgruntled floor general, Damian Lillard — but would it make sense from a strategic point of view for Boston and Miami? Though his injury and lack of presence in the 2023 East Finals did not do Herro’s stock any favors, but he is a good player with skills Boston could use.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast decided to debate this question on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say.
