Boston’s Jayson Tatum says his goodbyes to Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon

Tatum took to social media on Sunday to say goodbye to a pair of teammates in Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams III

All-NBA Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum took to social media on Sunday to say goodbye to a pair of teammates in Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams III after both were dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers in the deal that brought back All-Star guard Jrue Holiday.

“This one hurt,” said Tatum on his Instagram of the Timelord trade (h/t the Boston Globe’s Trevor Haas). My brother right here. Toughest part about this business, appreciate you for everything. Super proud of the player you have become and excited to see how far you take it. Keep striving to be special and never change who you are.”

“My dawg 4L till we link up again,” he added. “Nothing but love.”

The St. Louis native also had parting words for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year. “True professional, nothing but love and respect for this guy,” said Tatum of Brogdon’s departure. “Best of luck this year.”

Making sense of the Jrue Holiday deal to the Boston Celtics

After several days of speculation, the Boston Celtics have traded for All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday.

After several days of speculation, the Boston Celtics have traded for All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday per multiple sources. In the trade, the Celtics are sending out the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon, fan favorite big man Robert Williams III, Golden State’s 2024 first round pick, and their own 2029 unprotected first round pick.

The former Milwaukee Bucks guard was dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers in the deal that sent star floor general Damian Lillard to the Bucks, with Holiday now joining Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, and Derrick White as the stars of a heavy-duty starting lineup expected to be the leading threat to win it all in 2024.

The hosts of the NBC Sports Boston “Pre Game Live” show paused their football-oriented broadcast to break down the rough outlines of the trade that took place this Sunday morning.

Here is everything the Trail Blazers have received in return for Damian Lillard (so far)

This is MUCH better than what Miami reportedly offered.

After months of speculation, the Portland Trail Blazers traded Damian Lillard. In return, they have received a hefty package of players and picks.

The seven-time All-Star was sent to the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team trade involving the Phoenix Suns. He was traded alongside former teammates Jusuf Nurkic, Nassir Little and Keon Johnson.

In return, the Trail Blazers received a package centered around Milwaukee’s Jrue Holiday. Portland, however, then re-routed Holiday to the Boston Celtics and landed two helpful players (Robert Williams and Malcolm Brogdon) and additional draft assets.

RELATED: The fallout from the Damian Lillard trade might have the Trail Blazers in big trouble with the NBA

Portland sends:

  • Damian Lillard
  • Jusuf Nurkic (to PHX)
  • Nassir Little (to PHX)
  • Keon Johnson (to PHX)

Portland receives:

  • Deandre Ayton (via Suns)
  • Robert Williams (via Celtics)
  • Malcolm Brogdon (via Celtics)
  • Toumani Camara (via Suns)
  • 2024 1st-round pick (via Warriors)
  • 2029 1st-round pick (via Bucks)
  • 2029 1st-round pick (via Celtics)
  • Two first-round pick swaps with Bucks (2028, 2030)

So that’s three first-round picks and two pick swaps as well as a former No. 1 pick (Ayton) and other valuable assets.

Meanwhile, the package could grow a bit more before it is all said and done. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Trail Blazers are expected to keep Williams to pair alongside Ayton in the frontcourt.

However, the trade package could continue to grow if Brogdon is traded to another team before the season begins at the end of the month.

All things considered, this return is obviously much better than anything the Miami Heat reportedly offered.

How many Boston Celtics have been named 6th Man of the Year – and who were they?

Can you name the duo who first won the award for Boston three years running? Better yet — can you name the seasons?

When you scan the history of the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award, it would be easy to miss the brief era during which the Boston Celtics dominated the annual honor bestowed upon the player deemed to be the best player for his ball club coming off the bench as a substitute for a starter.

It was a short epoch, spanning three consecutive years in which two Boston frontcourt players earned the honor, followed by a fourth, more recent player on Boston’s roster taking home the hardware. If the award had been around before the 1982-83 NBA season, the Celtics might have had more winners given the team-oriented style of play and depth that carried them throughout the 1960s.

But four awards in franchise history is still a solid record. Can you name the duo who first won the honor for Boston and the seasons in which they did it?

Celtics president Brad Stevens opens up about Malcolm Brogdon being in trade talks

“Some stuff has been talked about with the Brogdon stuff, you just have conversations about it,” explained Stevens.

By now it is no secret that the Boston Celtics held trade talks regarding the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon — and that those talks continue even now. That was further corroborated in a recent interview of team president Brad Stevens with the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.

“Some stuff has been talked about with the Brogdon stuff, you just have conversations about it,” explained Stevens. “You understand why a person would feel angry about that. But at the same time, that’s why you have those conversations. You work together. Obviously, in almost all scenarios, you’re talking about unbelievable players on all sides.”

“That’s the other part of the recognition being discussed,” he added. “Again, a lot of the stuff that you read, we’re making calls all year.”

“The other 29 teams know who we like on their team because we tell them,” continued the Celtics president. “And we know who they like on our team because they tell us.”

“Does that become a rumor? You have to have an idea who you’d like to target and who’s attainable and who’s not.”

Are the Boston Celtics still trying to trade Malcolm Brogdon?

It’s worth remembering Brogdon’s value to the team, especially after the departure of Marcus Smart.

The status of Malcolm Brogdon’s future with the Boston Celtics has been a topic of discussion in recent weeks, with speculation about a potential trade given the fallout of a near-deal of the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year to the Los Angeles Clippers earlier in the offseason. In Adam Himmelsbach’s recent Boston Globe article, he notes that there have been no signs of Brogdon participating in team workouts, raising questions about his situation.

Brogdon has since arrived in Boston, but the Celtics’ front office has been relatively tight-lipped about Brogdon’s status beyond acknowledging he is still irked, but indications suggest that they are not actively considering trading him. It’s worth remembering Brogdon’s value to the team, especially after the departure of Marcus Smart.

The folks at the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast got together to talk it over on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their thoughts on a potential Brogdon trade.

Boston might be able to enlist the Clippers to land Jrue Holiday – and might trade Malcolm Brogdon regardless

Jared Weiss of the Athletic reports the Celtics are exploring contingency deals for the former 6MOTY while in pursuit of Holiday.

More rumbles about the Boston Celtics having an interest in trading for now-Portland Trail Blazers veteran point guard Jrue Holiday — and possibly dealing the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon whether or not such a Holiday trade materializes — has been percolating up this Friday morning via The Athletic NBA insider Jared Weiss.

Per Weiss, the “price for Holiday likely starts at two first-round picks, but several teams in the mix have the means and motivation to go beyond that.” That milieu of ball clubs of course includes the Celtics, but also the Los Angeles Clippers — a team Boston has also been linked to this offseason via trade rumors.

With Los Angeles also in the hunt for Holiday, the ask could get quite steep, unless of course Boston gets involved in another way.

Celtics president Brad Stevens admits Malcolm Brogdon still irked over near-trade

Stevens explained that the situation was something the team was working towards resolving.

It seems reports regarding the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year being irked at the Boston Celtics are true, though Celtics team president Brad Stevens made it clear that a rapprochement to move beyond the trade that nearly sent Malcolm Brogdon to the Los Angeles Clippers is the team’s focus ahead of training camp according to recent reporting from the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn. “I would say he had every right to feel (upset), said Stevens.

“We said that this summer. But he’s a real pro and so we’ve had several discussions,” added the Celtics president, who explained that the situation was, per Washburn, something the team was working towards resolving with the Virginia alum. “He’s looking forward to getting started.”

“We’re looking forward to getting started and here we go,” he continued, alluding to the fact that all the team’s players had arrived in Boston to prepare for the season ahead.

“Everybody’s in Boston, everybody’s healthy, knock on wood,” noted Stevens. “If everybody gets through the rest of the week, we should be full next Tuesday when we start practice. We’re excited about that.”

Celtics Lab 217: Taking stock of unresolved storylines ahead of Boston’s training camp with Adam Kaufman

Several unresolved storylines could potentially impact the team’s 2023-24 campaign significantly should they remain in such a state much longer than the start of the regular season.

Less than a week away from the Boston Celtics‘ 2023 Media Day proceedings set to kick off on Monday, October 2, a number of unresolved storylines could potentially impact the team’s 2023-24 campaign significantly should they remain in such a state much longer than the start of the regular season later in the month.

What is going on with Malcolm Brogdon emotionally and in terms of health? How is Kristaps Porzingis’ plantar fasciitis coming along, and what will his role be with the ball club? Who is going to man the point in the absence of Marcus Smart, and who will be a vocal leader sans he and Grant Williams both? And is the coaching staff ready for the tall task of hanging banners?

To get up to speed on all of the above, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast reached out to one of the two co-hosts of our sister CLNS pod that has been at the center of at least some of those unresolved storylines, The Gambler’s Adam Kaufman.

We also get caught up on what news there has been of late regarding late-offseason signings, whispers about what’s been going on at Auerbach Center, and even some thoughts on how the Damian Lillard trade saga might play out, so tune in!

Celtics three goals: Malcom Brogdon needs to diversify his offensive attack

How can Malcolm Brogdon maximize his offensive output with the Boston Celtics?

One of the highlights of the 2022-23 season for the Boston Celtics was Malcolm Brogdon’s service off the bench. He was one of the league’s top 3-point threats, and his patient resolve gave Boston a steady offensive boost all season long. Brogdon’s excellent play earned him the 2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award, making him the third Celtics player to land the honor.

Fast-forward a few months, and the mood has changed considerably. At the time of this writing, the relationship between Brogdon and Boston is a little unclear in part thanks to an elbow injury suffered in the postseason and an abandoned trade during the offseason.

That said, injuries heal, and Brogdon is as professional as they come. The turbulence of the offseason may quickly become a thing of the past once the 2023-24 campaign begins. Brogdon is, after all, a key piece for the Celtics, and Boston is probably the best spot for the 30-year-old to compete for a title.  If Brogdon remains a member of the Celtics, there are a few things he can focus on to maximize his impact next year.
