Alabama starter to reportedly miss ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Michigan due to injury

An Alabama starter will reportedly miss the ReliaQuest Bowl due to injury.

According to head coach Kalen DeBoer on Wednesday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide starting safety Malachi Moore will miss the ReliaQuest Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines due to an injury.

“Malachi Moore, he’s been going through an injury pretty much a lot of the season,” DeBoer said. “Just got to the point where he wasn’t going to be able to play, so just kind of putting that out there. He’s having surgery actually today. He wanted to do everything he could to get out there, was trying to wait it out to see if it could possibly be something he’s able to participate in. Probably the biggest thing I’ll say is he just grinded through the year with it. It’s not something recent, it’s been something that’s been ongoing. Maybe some kind of saw or felt something like that.”

A graduate student, the game vs. Michigan would have been Moore’s last of his lengthy Alabama career, meaning that the veteran safety’s time with the Crimson Tide has now officially come to an end.

Moore leaves Tuscaloosa as one of the more experienced Alabama safeties in recent program history, spending five seasons with the Crimson Tide dating back to his freshman year in 2020. Over those five years, Moore was a multi-year starter in Alabama’s secondary, and leaves Tuscaloosa with a combined stat line of 214 tackles, 16 TFL, 2.5 sacks, seven interceptions, 25 PD, two fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles, as well as with one national championship in 2020.

This season, Moore had a career-year for the Crimson Tide where he started in 12 games, amassing a career-high 70 tackles with three TFL, one sack, two interceptions, eight PD, one fumble recovery, and two forced fumbles.

“Just hats off to how much he loves this place, how bad he wanted to be out there on the field each-and-every Saturday, and even how bad he wanted to be out there with these guys and finish off his career for the bowl game,” DeBoer said. “Unfortunately we’re not gonna have him. Love that kid to death. He has a bright future in everything he does. He poured a lot into this place, a lot of passion, a lot of want-to, a lot of desire. A lot of things that I know the rest of our team really took from him and learned along the way.”

Alabama will play Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31, with kickoff set for 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Malachi Moore and Tyler Booker named to AP All-American Second-Team

Alabama duo named to AP All-American Second Team.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will wrap up their 2024 campaign in two weeks against the Michigan Wolverines in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. It will be the second straight season the two sides have met in the postseason after clashing in last year’s Rose Bowl.

The Crimson Tide’s season is characterized by disappointment after missing out on the first 12-team Playoff, but there are many positive aspects to take away from it. I know there are national title expectations in Tuscaloosa, and for good reason, but 9-3 in Kalen DeBoer’s first year is far from a bad thing.

Two players who had a massive impact on the start of DeBoer’s tenure are Captains Malachi Moore and Tyler Booker who were both recognized as AP Second-Team All-Americans. They were both also listed as First-Team All-SEC members last week.

Booker, a junior, has been a two-year starter and will likely hear his name called in the first or second round of the 2025 NFL draft after not allowing a single sack in all 12 games this year according to Pro Football Focus. Meanwhile, Moore is a fifth year senior who has been a staple of the Alabama program and will participate in the Reese’s Senior Bowl next Spring to help boost his draft stock

Alabama DB Malachi Moore accepts invite to Reese’s Senior Bowl

Malachi Moore set to attend Reese’s Senior Bowl to prepare for 2025 NFL draft.

Malachi Moore will always have a special place in Alabama Crimson Tide history as one of the foundational pieces who stayed during the transition from Nick Saban to Kalen DeBoer.

It has been an up-and-down season for the Alabama defense, but Moore has been as reliable as any player. Moore started as a true freshman in 2020 but didn’t consistently start for the Crimson Tide in some of the years following. He’s tallied 66 tackles on the year with two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Moore will definitely be selected in the 2025 NFL draft, but he is more likely to be a mid-round pick. To improve his draft stock, Moore will attend the Reese’s Senior Bowl this Spring. Crimson Tide defensive backs have faired very well professionally, so I think someone will get a steal with Moore.

Moore and the Crimson Tide take on Auburn on Saturday in one last chance to salvage their Playoff hopes. With three losses, they are in serious jeopardy and will need an impressive win to convince the committee.

WATCH: Malachi Moore makes huge interception to set up Alabama touchdown

Malachi Moore’s interception late in the first half against Missouri led to Alabama’s first touchdown.

It’s halftime at Bryant-Denny Stadium and the 15th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide lead the 17th-ranked Missouri Tigers, 13-0.

It was an ugly affair for both teams for much of the first half. Things shifted in Alabama’s favor late in the second quarter thanks to a clutch interception by Crimson Tide defensive back Malachi Moore.

With banged-up starting quarterback Brady Cook out of the game for Missouri, Moore picked off backup QB Drew Pyne at the Alabama 34-yard line with 2:37 to play until halftime. Moore brought the ball back 31 yards to the Missouri 35-yard line for Alabama’s first takeaway.

Three plays later, Jam Miller took a handoff from Jalen Milroe and walked into the end-zone untouched from three yards out for Alabama’s first touchdown of the afternoon and a 13-0 lead after Graham Nicholson tacked on the extra point with 1:54 to play until intermission.

It was a big answer for an Alabama team that had three takeaways in last week’s loss to Tennessee but failed to convert any of those into points.

At the break, Alabama had 167 yards of total offense and held Missouri to 101 yards. Milroe was 10-of-15 for 109 yards, including a pair of 20+ catches from receivers Germie Bernard and Emmanuel Henderson.

Henderson’s 28-yard catch to the Missouri 3-yard line after Moore’s interception’s set up Miller’s touchdown run.

Best Alabama football players NOT named Jalen Milroe

Here are the players Alabama has at their disposal that will be the biggest threats against a Georgia win.

In a matchup between two powerhouses of the SEC, several players can make or break the game for either opponent. There are several reasons why College GameDay is hosting this game, and here are some players that they will be highlighting from the side of the Crimson Tide.

*UGA Wire will look to discuss Jalen Milroe in his article since he’s a much more important part of the Alabama offense.

Tyler Booker, Parker Brailsford, & Kaydn Proctor, offensive linemen

One of the biggest storylines of the game will be Georgia’s defensive line against Alabama’s offensive line. With Georgia’s injuries on the d-line, and these three stalwarts on the offensive line, it looks one-sided on paper.

Proctor is probably the most notable out of the three because of his near-transfer to Iowa. Thankfully for Alabama fans, they got the stud freshman guard back. Proctor made the SEC All-Freshman team his freshman year and was a part of the 2024 All-SEC Preseason team.

Booker is the most decorated out of the bunch. Ever since his freshman year at ‘Bama in 2022, he’s been an anchor guard on the line. In 2023, he made the All-SEC Second Team, and this year, like Proctor, he made the All-SEC Preseason team in 2024. He’s eligible for the NFL Draft this year, and he has first-round talent

Brailsford also made the 2024 All-SEC Preseason team. Brailsford was a transfer from Washington, choosing to follow his coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama. With Washington, he was an honorable mention for freshman offensive player of the year and was 2nd team All-Offense for the Pac-12.

Ryan Williams, wide receiver

Williams was mentioned by name in our article about how Alabama could pull off a victory over Georgia, and there’s a big reason why. Williams has dazzled in his first season in the SEC, garnering 285 receiving yards and four touchdowns on just 10 receptions. His 28.5 yards per reception put him fourth in the SEC (first with over 10 receptions) and eighth in the FBS. Williams is a dynamic talent that Georgia corners will have to contain if they have any hope of winning this game.

Malachi Moore, safety

Moore was not listed on the injury report after suffering a head injury against Wisconsin, which means he’ll be another player Georgia will have to contend with. Moore also made the 2024 All-SEC Preseason team, and with his four years of service at Alabama, he earned it, racking up 17 pass deflections and five interceptions. He’s also made the PFF All-SEC team in Week 3.

Honorable Mentions: Justice Haynes, Jam Miller, Deontae Lawson

Alabama suffers three key injuries in dominant road victory over Wisconsin

Alabama loses two starters to injury in Saturday’s victory over Wisconsin.

The first road test of the Kalen DeBoer era could not have gone any better for the Alabama Crimson Tide as they hammered the Wisconsin Badgers 42-10. QB Jalen Milroe continues to build a strong case for the Heisman Trophy early on as he posted 271 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns today.

However, the victory didn’t come without a few wounds as RB Richard Young, DB Malachi Moore and LB Qua Russaw all left the game injured.

Moore suffered a head injury in the second half and will go through concussion protocol this week. However, he should be back for Georgia in two weeks with no issues. Russaw and Young both suffered lower leg injuries and DeBoer says they will continue to monitor the situation but did not indicate the severity of either.

The Tide will need to be at full strength to take on the No. 1 ranked Bulldogs in a few weeks.

Alabama lands 14 players on 2024 Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team

Alabama lands 14 total on 2024 Preseason All-SEC Team.

Released on Thursday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide landed a total of 14 players on the 2024 Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team, which ranked as the second-most of any team across the conference. Alabama also had four different First Team selections, which ranked second in the SEC.

The Crimson Tide’s 14 selections trailed only the Georgia Bulldogs, who had 15 total players selected.

Those players selected, as well as what respective team each was named to, are as follows:

  • First Team: OL Tyler Booker, LB Deontae Lawson, DB Malachi Moore, P James Burnip
  • Second Team: OL Kadyn Proctor, C Parker Brailsford, DL Tim Smith, PK Graham Nicholson, LS Kneeland Hibbett
  • Third Team: QB Jalen Milroe, RB Justice Haynes, DL Tim Keenan III, LB Jihaad Campbell, DB Domani Jackson

Of these 14 names, Hibbett was the lone member of the group named as a First Team All-SEC selection a year ago, while both Booker and Burnip were Second Team picks.

Two Alabama defenders named to the Bednarik Award watch list

Bednarik Award watch list includes two Alabama defenders.

While Nick Saban was the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide he assembled some of the greatest defenses college football has ever seen. There was almost a certain level of fear and mystique playing against those teams.

Now, the Crimson Tide may be under new leadership in head coach Kalen DeBoer but don’t think for a second that means that the standard for defense is going to change.

There will be some difficulties, especially on the defensive side of the ball replacing guys like Dallas Turner, Terrion Arnold, Kool-Aid McKinstry and Chris Braswell who were all selected in the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL draft. The Alabama roster was also hit pretty hard by the transfer portal when Saban announced his retirement.

Despite the changes, there is still a ton of talent on this Alabama roster. Malachi Moore and Deontae Lawson will be the veteran leaders on this team, and they were also named to the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award.

The Bednarik Award has been presented annually to the best defensive player in college football dating back to 1995 when Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern won the award. Only two members of the Crimson Tide have ever won it in Jonathan Allen (2016) and Will Anderson (2022). North Carolina State’s Payton Wilson was the winner a season ago.

Alabama DB Malachi Moore compares new teammate to former Tide fan-favorite

See why Malachi Moore believes an incoming transfer should have fans excited.

Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Malachi Moore spoke with the media at SEC media days on Tuesday morning. Moore had high praise for incoming transfer and wide receiver Germie Bernard.

“Germie Bernard reminds me of John Metchie when he was here, the way he runs routes and stems and has creativity within his routes.”

That is high praise from Moore. Metchie III had an impressive career in Tuscaloosa. He finished his career in Tuscaloosa with 155 receptions for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns. Following the conclusion of his junior season, Metchie III was drafted in the second round by the Houston Texans.

Bernard’s career numbers are not close to Metchie III. A lot of that stems from the fact that Bernard sat behind three elite wide receivers a season ago in Seattle. Despite limited playing time at Washington, Bernard managed to reel in 34 receptions for 419 yards and two touchdowns.

The ceiling seems to be very high for Bernard. If expectations were not already high, they are now following Moore’s comparison for Bernard. If Bernard is able to perform similarly to Metchie III, this offense could be very difficult to navigate this season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama football program.

The third day of 2024 SEC media days is underway and it opened up with new Alabama Crimson Tide football head coach Kalen DeBoer speaking at the main podium, addressing media members, speaking to fans and answering a series of questions.

Alabama was well represented at SEC media days, which took place in Dallas, Texas this year. Not only was DeBoer there, but he was joined by quarterback Jalen Milroe, offensive lineman Tyler Booker and defensive back Malachi Moore.

Those three players also had an opportunity to field questions to talk about the new era of Crimson Tide football and preview the upcoming season.
