Malachi Flynn was the least dominant scorer to ever hit 50 points in an NBA game, which rocks

Here is some fun trivia about the Malachi Flynn Game.

Detroit Pistons guard Malachi Flynn had 50 points against the Hawks.

That is not a typo or some weird prank just to confuse people. Flynn, a 25-year-old guard who was included as part of a deadline deal from the Knicks to the Pistons, actually recorded a 50-point performance on Wednesday.

This was likely a surprise for everyone involved, including Flynn, who did not even appear in the starting lineup for the contest. In fact, he now ranks behind only Jamal Crawford for the most points scored off the bench ever in a single NBA game.

Even crazier, though, is that Flynn entered the game with the lowest scoring average from someone with a 50-point game.

Flynn averaged just 5.2 points per game before this random scoring outburst.

While the Pistons are having a dreadful season, it was amazing that the guard was given a chance to prove that this is something that he is capable of on the court.

No matter what happens during the rest of his basketball career, Flynn will always have the 50-point game associated with his name. It just goes to show that anyone can get hot on any given night if they get the right opportunity.

2020 NBA re-draft: Sixers take Malachi Flynn as Tyrese Maxey goes early

In a 2020 re-draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Malachi Flynn with Tyrese Maxey going early.

The Philadelphia 76ers are preparing for the NBA playoffs that begin on Sunday, but, during the downtime, it is fun to look back at the 2020 NBA draft.

Philadelphia had one first-round pick, thanks to the help of Mike Muscala and the Oklahoma City Thunder, and they made the most of it.

The Sixers selected Tyrese Maxey out of Kentucky the 21st pick, and he had a productive season for Philadelphia. He learned a lot and showed a great deal of development in his offensive game.

After a productive rookie season, Maxey was selected 12th by the Sacramento Kings in a re-draft of 2020 by Bleacher Report. With Maxey going so early, the Sixers selected Malachi Flynn at 21:

Flynn had a handful of huge scoring efforts when given full-time minutes. He wasn’t efficient for the season, but ball skills, creativity and shot-making should make Flynn a high-end backup at the least.

Flynn was selected 29th overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2020 draft and he averaged 7.5 points while shooting 32.1% from deep. He earned Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for April for Toronto.

Either way, the Sixers have to feel confident that they made the right decision when Maxey fell into their laps.

Malachi Flynn took over late and nearly led Raptors to comeback win

Flynn erupted for 12 points in the final two minutes on Tuesday as the Raptors fell just short of beating the Hawks.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday trailed by 12 points versus the Atlanta Hawks but some late-game heroics by rookie Malachi Flynn nearly helped pull off an improbable win.

Flynn erupted for 15 points in the fourth quarter, including 12 straight in the final two minutes, to get the Raptors to within two points. However, Brandon Goodwin sank two free throws on the ensuing possession to help Hawks seal the 108-103 victory.

The 29th overall pick went 5-of-7 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter to bring the Raptors back to within striking distance. He would finish the contest with a career-high 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in his third career start.

“Tonight, he was pretty much our offense down the stretch,” Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said. “You kinda get to that point where you just say, ‘Well, we might as well go for it.’ He starts banging a couple and playing care-free and playing hard on the defensive end, too. It’s good experience for him.”

Flynn also hit a career-high six 3-pointers on Tuesday, which easily surpassed his previous high of three, set last week. He finally came up short with a heat-check moment in the closing seconds as the Hawks eked out the win.

The Raptors have turned to Flynn a bit more recently with injuries piling up. The 22-year-old has played more aggressively and that has resulted in some of his best performances of the season with Tuesday his finest to date after catching fire late.

The injuries have allowed the Raptors to get a closer look at Flynn and he has shown a glimpse of his potential. With Toronto hanging around in the playoff race, the final stretch of the season should be a good chance for him to gain some valuable playing time.

Malachi Flynn ties career-high to help Raptors defeat Wizards

With the Raptors dealing with several injuries, Flynn has turned in his best two outings of the season in consecutive games.

With the Toronto Raptors down several players as of late, the team asked Malachi Flynn to be more aggressive and the rookie has responded with his best two games of the season.

Flynn tied a career-high with 16 points on Monday to help the Raptors erase a 19-point second-half deficit and defeat the Washington Wizards, 103-101. He also added six rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocked shots in 34 minutes of action.

“Malachi had a great game,” Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said. “He really packed the box score: Four steals, a couple of blocks, four assists, six rebounds. (A) really, really good game by him.”

The team knows that, with several starters out, getting aggressive performances from Flynn and others will be crucial in unlocking its offense. The results showed on Monday as Flynn had a crucial performance off the bench.

“He has just gotta be more aggressive,” Nurse said. “Right up the floor, when he sees an opening, he has gotta shoot in there. He doesn’t have to shoot, he can keep his dribble alive. You see guys keep the thing alive but he has gotta be aggressive that way. That is huge. If he can blast through there and get a few layups, that goes a long way in helping our offense.”

The performance by Flynn came after he set his career-high with 16 points on Friday night versus the Golden State Warriors. He now has three games scoring in double figures this season after playing sparingly throughout much of the year.

Nurse has stated that players like Flynn, who doesn’t often play, now have an opportunity to log significant minutes with several injuries on the roster. He appears to have stepped up and that production has been highly beneficial for the team.

With Fred VanVleet out, Malachi Flynn will come off bench for Raptors

Instead of starting Flynn in place of VanVleet, the Raptors will instead turn to DeAndre’ Bembry.

Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet was ruled out of playing on Monday versus the Washington Wizards due to a hip injury, which forced head coach Nick Nurse to shuffle the starting lineup.

Nurse on Sunday said the team would likely start rookie Malachi Flynn in place of VanVleet, but they will now turn to DeAndre’ Bembry instead of Flynn. The team confirmed the lineup change just prior to tipoff versus the Wizards.

VanVleet was listed as questionable to play versus the Wizards with a left hip flexor strain but will not be able to suit up. He suffered the injury on Friday versus the Golden State Warriors in the third quarter and would not return to the Raptors’ 53-point victory.

Flynn is coming off of his best performance of the season after scoring a career-high 16 points against the Warriors. The outing was just his second of the season in double figures after playing sparingly throughout much of the year.

Note: This story was edited to reflect the change to the starting lineup.

Nick Nurse: Malachi Flynn to start on Monday if VanVleet can’t play

VanVleet suffered a left hip injury versus the Warriors and is questionable to play on Monday night.

Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said rookie Malachi Flynn will start on Monday versus the Washington Wizards if Fred VanVleet cannot play due to injury.

The Raptors have listed VanVleet as questionable to play versus the Wizards with a left hip injury. He suffered the injury on Friday versus the Golden State Warriors in the third quarter and would not return to the Raptors’ 53-point victory.

The injury to VanVleet is not believed to be serious, but Flynn would be in line to earn his first career start should VanVleet need to sit during the contest, according to Aaron Rose of Sports Illustrated.

Flynn is coming off of his best performance of the season after scoring a career-high 16 points against the Warriors. The outing was just his second of the season in double figures after playing sparingly throughout much of the year.
