The UFC is back in Las Vegas this week with a featherweight clash and a pair of “Ultimate Fighter” finals.

UFC on ESPN 30 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag] (22-9 MMA, 16-9 UFC) takes on [autotag]Giga Chikadze[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 6-0 UFC) in a battle of elite-level strikers. Barboza is a slight -125 favorite at Tipico, and he has the slimmest of leads in the picks from our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers at 7-6.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Bryan Battle[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Gilbert Urbina[/autotag] (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in the Season 29 “Ultimate Fighter” middleweight final. Battle is a -180 favorite at the betting window and one of two unanimous picks for our staff members on the main card.

In the second “TUF 29” final, [autotag]Brady Hiestand[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) takes on [autotag]Ricky Turcios[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at bantamweight. Turcios is a -160 favorite and has a big 11-2 edge in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Kevin Lee[/autotag] (18-6 MMA, 11-6 UFC) returns for a welterweight fight against [autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] (15-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC). Lee is the favorite at -150 and has a commanding 11-2 picks lead – though it’s intriguing that Rodriguez won our fan poll handily at 58 percent.

“TUF 29” cast members [autotag]Micheal Gillmore[/autotag] (6-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and [autotag]Andre Petroski[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) meet in a middleweight bout to officially open their UFC careers. Petroski is the second biggest favorite on the card at -550, and only one of our staff members is picking against him.

And to open the main card, we have our second unanimous pick in [autotag]Makhmud Muradov[/autotag] (25-6 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who has pitched a 13-0 picks shutout for his middleweight fight against [autotag]Gerald Meerschaert[/autotag] (32-14 MMA, 7-6 UFC). Muradov is the biggest favorite on the card at -650.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Barboza (53 percent), Battle (64 percent), Turcios (62 percent), Rodriguez (58 percent), Petroski (87percent) and Muradov (82 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

UFC books Makhmud Muradov vs. Gerald Meerschaert for Aug. 28

Makhmud Muradov will look to push his overall winning streak to 15 against Gerald Meerschaert.

[autotag]Makhmud Muradov[/autotag] hasn’t lost in four-and-a-half years. Can he keep that going against [autotag]Gerald Meerschaert[/autotag]?

Muradov announced Saturday on Instagram that his next middleweight bout will be against Meerschaert on Aug. 28 at UFC Fight Night. MMA Junkie subsequently confirmed the booking with a person with knowledge of the situation, who asked to remain anonymous since the UFC has yet to officially make an announcement.

Muradov (25-6 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is riding a 14-fight winning streak that dates back to April 2017, which includes his first three UFC fights – against Alessia Di Chirico, Trevor Smith, and Andrew Sanchez. Most recently, Muradov, 31, TKO’d Sanchez with a flying knee and punches this past January at UFC 257.

Meerschaert (32-14 MMA, 7-6 UFC), 33, will aim to continue rebuilding. He’s 3-5 in his past eight fights but most recently snapped a two-fight losing streak after he choked out Bartosz Fabiński last month at UFC on ESPN 22.

UFC 257 ‘Fight Motion’: Dustin Poirier chops down Conor McGregor before finish

Check out these super slow-mo UFC 257 highlights, including clips of Dustin Poirier’s big win over Conor McGregor.

Over six years later, [autotag]Dustin Poirier[/autotag] got his revenge against [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag].

Poirier, who was stopped in Round 1 in his 2014 meeting with McGregor, was able to flip the script in their rematch, which headlined UFC 257. In a competitive first round, Poirier was able to take some of McGregor’s best shots, firing back with a few of his own. “The Diamond” briefly got McGregor to the ground as the two exchanged positions in the clinch.

But it was one key tactical change that paid dividends for Poirier, who effectively used calf kicks to hinder McGregor’s movement. Midway through Round 2, Poirier (27-6 MMA, 19-5 UFC) hit McGregor (22-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) one one more leg kick, before backing him up against the cage with a barrage of punches that finished the fight.

You can watch it all unfold in super slow-motion in the UFC 257 “Fight Motion” video highlights above.

Also featured are [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag]’s statement finish of Dan Hooker, [autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag]’s big upset TKO of Amanda Ribas, [autotag]Makhmud Muradov[/autotag]’s late finish of Andrew Sanchez, and plenty more back-and-forth action from the prelims.

UFC 257 took place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The main card streamed on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+/UFC Fight Pass.

UFC 257 medical suspensions: Conor McGregor faces potential lengthy layoff due to injury

Following his first career knockout loss, Conor McGregor was handed a potential lengthy suspension.

[autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] is facing hefty time off following his UFC 257 loss to [autotag]Dustin Poirier[/autotag] on Saturday.

Former UFC double champion McGregor (22-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) suffered a technical knockout loss – the first of his career – in a rematch against Poirier (27-6 MMA, 20-6 UFC). Prior to the finish, Poirier damaged McGregor’s legs with an onslaught of leg kicks.

McGregor, 32, was handed a 180-day medical suspension as a result of a potential right tibia/fibula injury sustained in the fight. Like all medical suspensions, he will be eligible to return sooner, if his injuries are cleared by a doctor.

Poirier, meanwhile, received a seven-day suspension for mandatory rest.

MMA Junkie obtained the full list of medical suspensions from MixedMartialArts.com for UFC 256, which took place this past Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

[lawrence-related id=583936,584042]

After the fight, McGregor was on crutches. He hobbled his way backstage and to the post-fight news conference, where he expressed the pain he felt.

“My leg is completely dead,” McGregor said. “Even though I felt like I was checking them, it was just sinking into the muscle in the front of the leg, and it was badly compromised. It was like an American football in my suit at the moment, so it is what it is.”

UFC 257 competitors [autotag]Andrew Sanchez[/autotag] and [autotag]Matt Frevola[/autotag] were also each handed 180-day suspensions. Sanchez, who lost via TKO to Makhmud Muradov on the main card, suffered potential nasal and tibia/fibula injuries. In the featured preliminary card bout, Frevola suffered a potential right hand injury in a unanimous decision defeat to Arman Tsarukyan.

The full UFC 257 medical suspensions include:

  • Dustin Poirier: Suspended seven days (mandatory rest).
  • Conor McGregor: Suspended 180 days or until right tibia/fibula x-ray is cleared by a doctor; also suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days.

UFC 257 bonuses: Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier lead ‘Performance’ parade

Four fantastic performances at UFC 257 got the bonus cash they deserved.

A memorable first UFC pay-per-view event of 2021 is in the books, and with it comes four post-fight bonus winners.

Post-fight bonuses come either one of two ways: A “Fight of the Night” and two “Performance of the Night” awards, or four “Performance of the Night” honors.

Saturday was one of the latter nights, and four competitors will go home with an extra $50,000 in their pockets: the lightweight winners at the top of the card, [autotag]Dustin Poirier[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag], and two more main carders in [autotag]Makhmud Muradov[/autotag] and [autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag].

UFC 257 took place Saturday at Etihad Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.
