Arkansas drops final noncon before SEC play

Morgan Maly scored 20 points off the bench and Creighton made 14 3-pointers to beat Arkansas on Tuesday afternoon, 81-72.

The Razorbacks’ loss dropped them to 10-3 on the season during nonconference play. Arkansas opens SEC play December 30 at Ole Miss.

Creighton jumped out early, leading 16-8 in the first quarter. A 29-20 Blue Jays second was enough to withstand Arkansas’ second-half charge.

Makayla Daniels scored a career-high 34 points for Arkansas on 11 of 17 shooting. Jersey Wolfenbarger and Sasha Goforth added another 11 apiece and Samara Spencer had 10.

Arkansas’ problem, though, was a lack of depth. Only one other player scored at all for the Hogs, while Creighton had five players in double figures and the Jays’ bench outscored Arkansas 45-6.

The Razorbacks and Ole Miss split their season series last year, one win apiece. The Rebels were picked sixth in the SEC in the preseason, while Arkansas was picked seventh. Tip from Oxford is at 6 p.m.

Makayla Daniels scored a career-high 35 points and Arkansas bounced back from a loss last time out to beat California, 84-67, on Sunday.

The Razorbacks trailed after the first quarter but dominated Cal the rest of the way as Sasha Goforth chipped in another 19 points. Arkansas dominated largely from the free-throw line, shooting 29 of 32 from the stripe when Cal committed 27 personal fouls.

The win lifted Arkansas to 7-2 on the season and provided a return to form after the Hogs fell to Central Florida on Thursday. Cal was picked to finish last in the Pac 12 this season.

Daniels has scored in double figures in six of Arkansas’ nine games. Her season high before Sunday was 22 and her career high had been 27 points, scored her freshman season.

Arkansas next plays Thursday at home against Jackson State.

Arkansas falls in final seconds against UCF

Arkansas had a four-game winning streak snapped in the last eight seconds against Central Florida on Thursday.

Diamond Battles’ lay-up with nine seconds left put Central Florida ahead by a point and her steal of Sasha Goforth with four seconds left ensured UCF’s victory over Arkansas on Thursday night in Orlando, 52-51.

The loss is Arkansas’ (6-2) first in its last five games. The Golden Knights (6-1) have won four straight games, including victories over Southern California and Virginia, as well. UCF’s only loss is to No. 11 Tennessee.

Battles had appeared to the be the scapegoat for a potential UCF loss when Erynn Barnum stole the ball from her with 30 seconds left. Goforth put the Razorbacks ahead on the ensuing possession. Battles and Tay Sanders were the only two Central Florida players who finished in double figures as Sanders had 15 points and Battles another 13.

Arkansas guard Makayla Daniels led all players with 18 points. Goforth also finished in double figures with 11.

The Razorbacks return to Bud Walton Arena on Sunday for a matinee against California.

Razorbacks women have off night, still take down Southern Methodist

Arkansas women overcome bad shooting night to get past SMU, 65-58.

The Arkansas women’s basketball won its second straight game Monday night, beating Southern Methodist in Bud Walton Arena, 65-58.

Three different Hogs players scored in double figures, led by Erynn Barnum’s 18. Makayla Daniels added 16 and Amber Ramirez had another 11. SMU was led by Savannah Wilkinson’s 20.

The Razorbacks (4-1) next play Saturday afternoon against Sam Houston State at home. Arkansas’ only loss so far this season came at No. Connecticut back on November 14.

Coach Mike Neighbors’ team led by as many as 14 in the fourth quarter, but a 12-3 SMU run tightened things in the final three minutes. The Mustangs proceeded to shoot just 1 for 4 and commit two turnovers the rest of the way.

Arkansas shot just 39% from the field for the game, including 4 of 20 from 3-point range. The Razorbacks also only made 11 of 27 free throws. SMU helped by committing 16 turnovers, which Arkansas converted into 18 points.
