Favorite Spartans of all time bracket round one: Magic Johnson region

Voting is open for the first round of matchups in The SpartansWire Favorite Spartans ever bracket

Hello and welcome to the official start of the SpartansWire Favorite Spartans of all Time Tournament. Sure, that’s a terrible name, but at this point, who cares? It’s a pandemic outside. Fictional bracket names don’t matter right now.

Today I’m going to lay out the Magic Johnson region, which is highlighted by overall number one seed–you guessed it–Magic Johnson. Players will be pitted against each other and the winner will be decided exclusively by fan vote.

Here’s the full region for a quick refresher.

As with every region, there are a number of big names in the bracket without much separating the top seeds from the lower seeds.

Let’s get to the matchups!

9 of the best NCAA Tournament performances ever

March Madness makes memories. Shining team moments, sure, but also incredible individual performances. Here are nine of the finest.

9. Bo Kimble, Loyola Marymount, 1990

Hank Gathers. Bo Kimble. Who can forget that Lions team that overcame Gathers’s shocking, tragic death on the court in a WCC tournament game?
Kimble led No. 11 seeded LMU to the Elite Eight after beating New Mexico State, Michigan and Alabama, before being bounced by UNLV.
Kimble’s first left-handed free throw to honor Gathers remains an iconic moment in NCAA basketball history.

Magic Johnson: Lakers need Davis and LeBron to dominate, third scorer vs. Clippers

The Los Angeles Lakers legend believes that the Clippers have better depth, according to USA TODAY’s own Mark Medina.

While the Los Angeles Clippers have been loading up on talent through trades and free agency over the past few weeks, one Los Angeles Lakers Lakers legend believes that the Clippers have a depth advantage over the Lakers, even though he still believes the Lakers have what it takes to win in a series.

Magic Johnson weighed in on where the Lakers are at during a public appearance at a McDonald’s event this past All-Star weekend in Chicago, where his appearance was caught by USA TODAY’s own Mark Medina.

“If you look at man-for-man, (the Clippers are) probably better than (the Lakers) in terms of the bench,” Johnson said Friday at a McDonald’s-sponsored event in downtown Chicago called “Black & Positively Golden.”

“But to Anthony Davis and LeBron James, to me they are going to be the key and they are going to have to dominate in that series. Then we’re going to need that third scorer.”

Earlier this season, LeBron said that the Lakers want Kyle Kuzma to be that third scorer for them.

“We want him to be that third scorer for us, consistently get to 18 to 20 points a night and more important you know, it’s just the efficiency right now that I love,” James said of Kuzma after their Dec. 28 game in Portland. “He’s just been very efficient mixing it up with his 3s, his paint touches. You saw it tonight on the break as well, just mixing it up.”

Kuzma has found it difficult to deliver in that role this season, mostly because his best position is a power forward, the preferred position of Anthony Davis. The best hope for a third scorer still remains Kuzma, despite a down season in which many a Lakers fan have soured on his game.

However, the Lakers’ reluctance to make a play in trades or in the buyout market should be a tell that they still believe enough in him to give him a chance to prove he can be the No. 3 scorer on the game’s biggest stage.

Kuzma is averaging 12.6 points and four rebounds in a career-low 24.7 minutes per game. However, his 3-point shooting is up a slight tick this season at 33.2%, up from 30.3 percent last season, in addition to increasing his rate of 3-pointers. Kuzma has taken 41.3% of his shots from the 3-point line up from 38.8% last season. Kuzma also rates in the 67th percentile in spot-up situations, which rates out as “very good,” according to Synergy Sports, scoring 1.061 points per possession in spot-up situations, which represent 28% of his offensive activity.

LeBron spoke about reading Sports Illustrated, newspapers as a child

The Los Angeles Lakers star was asked about his reading habits as a youngster and he cited reading newspapers and Sports Illustrated.

You never know what might get asked at All-Star Media Day. The topics, more than at any other time in NBA media settings, can vary wildly. But sometimes that unpredictability can lead to poignant or even educational moments that can have a greater impact than your typical questions at this juncture of the season. One of those great, unexpected moments came during LeBron James’ media session on Saturday.

James was asked about some of his reading habits as a kid and he told the gathered media that he truly loved reading the sports section and Sports Illustrated, “not just the pictures,” when he was young.

Among the many things that James is known for, his constant state of curiosity about the world is one that rarely gets as much attention as the others. Perhaps it’s that state of curiosity is also why Anthony Davis recently likened LeBron, who recently turned 35, to “a big kid.”

LeBron and Anthony Davis post pair of 30-10 games, join Lakers history

LeBron James and Anthony Davis are the first Lakers duo to both score 30 points and grab 10 rebounds since the late Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol did so in 2008.

LeBron James and Anthony Davis continued to stake their claim for best duo in the NBA with their pair of quality performances Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets.

James and Davis led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 120-116 overtime win over the Nuggets. According to Justin Kubatko of Stat Muse, James and Davis became the first pair of Lakers teammates to both score at least 30 points and grab 10 rebounds since Pau Gasol and the late Kobe Bryant accomplished the feat in March 2008.

James had a triple-double, scoring 32 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing 14 assists. Davis scored 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. With the win, the Lakers went into the All-Star break with the best record in the Western Conference.

The Lakers are a franchise filled with historic duos. Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar helped lead the Lakers to five titles in the 1980s. Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal led the Lakers to three straight championships from 2000-2002. Bryant and Gasol were the top players on the Lakers’ championship teams in 2009 and 2010.

As the season continues, the Lakers will need more of James’ and Davis’ high-caliber play to remain atop the West. James and Davis are the only other pair of teammates besides Russell Westbrook and James Harden to rank in the top 15 of the league for points per game.

Los Angeles will play against the Memphis Grizzlies at the Staples Center on Feb. 21 in their first game back from the All-Star break.

Lakers to play first game since Kobe’s death Friday vs. Blazers

The Los Angeles Lakers are taking the court for the first time since the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and seven others.

The Los Angeles Lakers, more than anybody in the basketball world, have needed time to mourn the loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and seven others. After postponing Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Lakers will be back on the court against a team that Kobe himself loved to torture, the Portland Trail Blazers.

But tonight will be about much more than just the Lakers against the Blazers. While the details on it are scarce, the Lakers are planning to have a special pre-game ceremony where they will honor Kobe’s memory. While they have not yet scheduled a funeral or memorial for Kobe, the start of tonight’s game is expected to function a little bit like a mini-memorial, according to comments made from head coach Frank Vogel on Thursday.

The weight of the night was even too much for one of the players on the Trail Blazers, Carmelo Anthony. Anthony, who was a friend of Kobe and played with him on the 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medal teams, did not travel with the Blazers for personal reasons.

None of the players on the Lakers have been able to speak to reporters yet since the tragedy and while it’s customary that they speak after tonight’s game, there’s no guarantee that the many Lakers touched by Kobe’s legacy will be able to speak about him just yet.
