Giants’ Daniel Jones, Blake Martinez questionable vs. Cardinals

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones and LB Blake Martinez are questionable against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14.

The New York Giants took the field for their final open practice of the week on Friday and once again, all eyes befell second-year quarterback Daniel Jones, who is nursing a hamstring injury.

For the second consecutive day, Jones took first-team reps during the portion of practice open to the media and looked good, but not quite 100%.

Head coach Joe Judge said he remains “fairly optimistic” Jones will play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

“I’m fairly optimistic,” Judge told reporters, “but at the same time, there’s a ways to go.”

Judge also expressed an optimism that linebacker Blake Martinez (back) could play in Week 14. But after limited participation on Thursday, Martinez was not seen during the media portion of practice on Friday.

Both Jones and Martinez were officially listed as questionable.

After two days of taking limited reps during practice, rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes did not practice on Friday due to a knee injury. Meanwhile, rookie offensive lineman Matt Peart was once again limited with an ankle injury.

Similar to Jones and Martinez, both Holmes and Peart are listed as questionable.

Defensive back Madre Harper, who did not practice this week with a knee injury, has been placed on injured reserve. He will miss at least three games.

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones, Blake Martinez limited

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (hamstring) and LB Blake Martinez (back) were limited in practice on Thursday.

After conducting a walkthrough on Wednesday, the New York Giants were back on the field for their first full practice of the week on Thursday. And wouldn’t you know it, both quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring) and linebacker Blake Martinez (back) were participating.

Jones was projected as a limited participant on Wednesday while Martinez did not practice, but each took major steps forwards just 24 hours later.

Jones took first-team reps during the portion of practice open to the media and was subsequently listed as “limited.” Head coach Joe Judge would not commit to him playing against the Arizona Cardinals.

“To be completely transparently honest with you guys, I don’t have an answer for you right now on that. I really have to see this guy move around on the field, and that’s just what it is,” Judge said of Jones playing in Week 14.

Martinez, like Jones, was also limited.

“Don’t want to talk too much about injuries and things like that. Just working every day to keep getting better and better to keep getting ready for Sunday,” Martinez told reporters.

The official injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: DB Madre Harper (knee)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (hamstring), LB Blake Martinez (back), OT Matt Peart (ankle), DB Darnay Holmes (knee)

Full participant: N/A

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones ‘limited’ in practice

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (hamstring) returned to practice on Wednesday while LB Blake Martinez (back) was sidelined.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday in snowy conditions as they prepare for a Week 14 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Although the Giants only conducted a walkthrough that lasted less than 90 minutes, all eyes were on quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring) and linebacker Blake Martinez (back).

The good news? Jones participated with his teammates and head coach Joe Judge told reporters he was “optimistic” the second-year quarterback would play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

“We’re going to give him an opportunity to go out there today and move around on the field,” Judge said. “We’re optimistic. I know he’s going to tell us everything we want to hear. We’ve got to use our eyes to set our ears with Daniel.

“We’re going to put him out there today and give him every chance go progress. Today is a walkthrough today so we’re not going to see anything full speed. Tomorrow we’ll be on the field moving around and Friday will be a big day for us to day for us to make a final decision.”

Things weren’t quite as positive for Martinez, who suffered a lower back injury late in a Week 13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Martinez was unable to return last Sunday and out on Wednesday, but Judge says he’s “hopeful” the defensive captain can play this coming Sunday.

“I have to be fair to Blake and see where he’s at. I hope so,” Judge said when asked if Blake can play on Sunday. “He was in meetings with us today, had a smile on his face and laughing, so you can always cut it with Blake. But obviously, guys are coming out of games, they’re banged up, they’re sore.

“Today being a walkthrough day is really part of the recovery from our trip going out west, so that should allow some guys with some nicks and bumps to do some things in practice, but when we get out there tomorrow it’ll kind of give us a better look in terms of guys that are dinged and bumped up in terms of how they can move around.”

Martinez rode the stationary bike during the portion of practice open to the media and despite his smile during meetings, was unable to join the team in their walkthrough.

The official (estimated) injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: DB Madre Harper (knee), LB Blake Martinez (back), OT Matt Peart (ankle)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (hamstring), DB Darnay Holmes (knee)

Full participant: N/A

Giants players honor Emlen Tunnell, Y.A. Tittle with practice jerseys

New York Giants players continued a new tradition during practice on Wednesday with several wearing Ring of Honor jerseys.

The New York Giants continued a recent tradition under first-year head coach Joe Judge where scout team players get to wear the jerseys of Giants Ring of Honorees. Two weeks go we reported on the first time the Giants did it:

Quarterback Colt McCoy donned the No. 16 jersey belonging to Frank Gifford, while cornerback Jarren Williams wore Mel Hein’s No. 7 and rookie linebacker Carter Coughlin wore Lawrence Taylor’s forever infamous No. 56.Offensive lineman Chad Slade also wore Chris Snee’s No. 76 and defensive lineman David Moa wore George Martin’s No. 75.

On Wednesday, at practice in the snowy confines of the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, there were more old jerseys on display.

Al Blozis was won offensive lineman for the Giants in 1942-43. At 6-foot and 250 pounds he was initially deemed to be too large for military service. But in 1943, Blozis found himself a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was killed in action in 1945 and his No. 32 was retired by the Giants. Legend has it that Blozis’ name was once on a plaque in centerfield of the Polo Grounds. The plaque was reportedly stolen.

Emlen Tunnell’s career with the Giants is well-documented. A nine-time Pro Bowler who was a member of the 1956 NFL Championship team and who played the last three seasons of his career with Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers. His No. 45 is not retired by the Giants.

Y.A. Tittle and Mel Hein’s careers are also well-documented. Tittle only played four seasons for the Giants but what a four seasons they were. His 36 touchdowns passes in 1963 stood as an NFL single season record until 1984 when Miami’s Dan Marino broke it with 48. His No. 14 is co-retired with Ward Cuff.

Hein played center and linebacker for the Giants for 15 seasons (1931-45). He was one of the 17 players indicted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 1963. His No. 7 is retired by the Giants.

Dick Lynch was born in Oceanside, New York and began his NFL career in 1958 with the Washington Redskins after attending Notre Dame, where is is a member of their Hall of Fame. He was traded to the Giants in 1959 for fourth round draft pick.

A defensive back, Lynch played eight seasons for the Giants, leading the NFL in interceptions in 1961 and 1963. After misplaying career, Lynch worked as an analyst on Giants radio broadcasts from 1967 until his death in 2008. His No. 22 is not retired.

Giants-Eagles Week 7: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 7 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants lost in crushing and heartbreaking fashion on Thursday night, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, 22-21. at Lincoln Financial Field.

For a team that hast lost so frequently in recent years, you would think the organization and fan base would be numb. But this one is going to sting and it’s going to sting for quite some time.

Here’s a look at the snap counts that attributed to the Giants’ sixth loss of the season.

Offensive snaps: 60
Defensive snaps: 81
Special teams snaps: 26

Sterling Shepard saw an impressive 46 snaps in his return, which dwarfed all other receivers not named Darius Slayton, while rookie offensive tackle Matt Peart took just six snaps after registering 25-plus in Week 6.

On the defensive side of the ball, injuries forced linebacker Devante Downs and safety Nate Ebner into increased roles. Cornerback Corey Ballentine and defensive back Madre Harper also saw between 21-30% of the defensive snaps, which did not play out well.

Giants place DB Brandon Williams on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed veteran defensive back Brandon Williams on injured reserve with a groin injury.

When the New York Giants took the field for practice on Wednesday, veteran defensive back Brandon Williams was not among them.

Williams, who missed a Week 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers with a groin injury, was initially listed as “did not participate,” but his status changed shortly thereafter.

The Giants announced that Williams had been placed on injured reserve — a move that will clear a spot for defensive back Madre Harper, who terminated his practice squad contract with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this week and is expected to sign with the Giants on Thursday.

Williams was initially a third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. He appeared in 45 games (three starts) for the Cards, tallying 38 tackles and five passes defensed. He also returned 10 kickoffs for 192 yards.

Williams was waived/injured as a part of Arizona’s final cuts in 2019, but went unclaimed. As a result, he reverted back to their injured reserve list and remained there the entire season.

Earlier this year, Williams had workouts with the Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears before signing with the Giants.

In two games with the Giants this season, Williams appeared on the field for 29 special teams snaps, but did not record a tackle.

Report: Giants to sign DB Madre Harper off Raiders’ practice squad

The New York Giants are signing rookie defensive back Madre Harper off of the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.

The New York Giants have not been satisfied with their depth at cornerback or safety, and have made multiple adjustments since the 2020 regular season began just over three weeks ago.

Following an up-and-down performance by cornerback Isaac Yiadom in Week 3 and an injury to safety Jabrill Peppers (ankle), the Giants are once again making a change, signing rookie defensive back Madre Harper off of the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.

Harper went undrafted out of Southern Illinois back in April. He had spent the first two years of his career playing at Oklahoma State.

In 11 games as a senior, Harper recorded 42 tackles (one for a loss), 14 passes defensed and two interceptions, while earning a coverage grade of 70.9 from Pro Football Focus. He was named honorable mention All-MVFC.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Harper failed to make the Raiders’ 53-man roster out of training camp and was subsequently signed to their practice squad.
