Madison Bumgarner got in the weirdest shouting match with Willson Contreras over a hard swing

Bumgarner was at it again.

In the current generation of Major League Baseball, there are few players out there who hate fun and personality more than Madison Bumgarner. The slightest hint of showboating will send Bumgarner off on a tirade — it’s been that way for much of his career.

But now, Bumgarner is getting mad at opponents for trying too hard for his liking. At least it sure seemed that way on Wednesday.

During the third inning of the Diamondbacks’ game against the Cardinals, Bumgarner did not appreciate a hard swing foul and post-swing scream from Willson Contreras. Like, all Contreras did was swing hard and make a noise. Pitchers — like Max Scherzer — grunt and scream when they pitch all the time. Bumgarner oddly wouldn’t tolerate that from Contreras.

The Cardinals broadcast picked up Bumgarner saying, “Shut the (expletive) up, you (expletive), (expletive) you.”

And you can understand how Contreras took issue with that. Bumgarner was out there throwing a tantrum over nothing. Contreras would end up walking in the at-bat (with a bat flip) and scoring in the inning.

Traducción: ROBLES ES UN REY POR ESTO.

Al beisbol le vendría bien tener más de esto.

Victor Robles had the perfect response after Madison Bumgarner called him a ‘clown’ for admiring HR

Well played, Victor.

It’s difficult to find a current Major League player who polices baseball’s unwritten rules quite like Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner. All it takes is one bat flip or a player staring at a home run for a few extra seconds to have Bumgarner fuming.

Max Muncy knows all too well what it’s like to have Bumgarner crying foul about home run etiquette. This weekend, it was Victor Robles’ turn to deal with Bumgarner’s complaints. But hey, at least Robles had fun with the whole ordeal.

During Saturday’s game, Robles hit an eighth-inning home run off of Bumgarner with the Nationals down six runs. And while it’s often silly to see a player celebrate while losing big, it’s been a rough year for Robles and the Nationals — he’s allowed to admire a home run if he wants.

Bumgarner felt differently because of course he did. After the game, which Arizona won 7-2, Bumgarner called Robles a “clown” for celebrating the homer like he was Barry Bonds. Obviously, Bumgarner could have avoided the situation by simply not giving up a home run to Victor Robles. If you don’t like the celebration, don’t give up the homer.

Robles, who pointed out the hypocrisy of Bumgarner’s tendency to celebrate his own big strikeouts, had an additional response for Sunday’s game. He was seen in the Nationals dugout wearing a clown nose.

Well played, Victor.

Bumgarner should probably stop worrying about how other players celebrate, but he’s never been one to let those things go. MLB fans did love how Robles handled the situation, though.

MLB needs to ban ump Dan Bellino for the clown move he pulled on Madison Bumgarner

Grow the heck up, Dan Bellino.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

MLB umpires are bad at their jobs way too often. Just look at what Angel Hernandez does almost every time he calls a game for proof of that.

But what Dan Bellino did yesterday to Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner was absolutely ridiculous and uncalled for and the dude shouldn’t be allowed on the field again for quite some time.

If you missed it, Bumgarner was mad at some calls in the first inning yesterday in Miami and as he walked to the dugout after the third out he had some things to yell into the air. Then Bellino, who was umping first base, came over to do the inspection for foreign substances and he made it all about himself. Instead of doing his job respectfully, he just stared at Bumgarner while he felt around his hand for substances and let him go. Bumgarner rightfully had something to say to Bellino after that – just as Bellino probably had hoped would happen – and Bumgarner was ejected by Bellino, who just could wait to throw him out of the game.

That was such a clown move by Bellino and one that should make every MLB umpire feel embarrassed to be associated with the guy. MLB should be angry that one of their umpires treated a player like that and upstaged a game just because he had to make things personal.

Look at this and tell me it wasn’t a clown move:

Bellino had this to say after the game:

“Well, there really wasn’t a conversation there, as the (MLB commissioner’s) report will note,” Bellino said. “He just made some inappropriate comments and was removed from the game.”

Yeah, he made those comments because of the disrespectful way you acted towards him, dude. You baited him into it, which was very easy to see.

Bumgarner was the mature one after the game, saying:

“I know why I got thrown out, yes. But you guys (have) seen the video. I don’t know if I could say anything that would make the situation better,” he said. “So what I’m gonna say is I’m extremely proud of our team coming back and winning because I put us in a big hole there. You know, obviously you didn’t go into the game with the intention of throwing one inning, and so for them to be able to fight, and everyone picked me up today for what happened. That’s pretty cool. Very proud.”

Bellino shouldn’t work another game for a long time. And when he does come back he should be booed by every fan in every stadium that he works at. An umpire just can’t act the way Bellino did yesterday and get away with it with no repercussions. Being an umpire means acting like an adult, not a child, and that’s something that Bellino clearly needs to learn.

Do the right thing, MLB, and tell this child that he has to take a time out for a while and that he has to spend that time thinking about what he has done because he obviously forgot how a real umpire should act.

What happened yesterday in Miami was a joke and it will be even more of a joke if Bellino is allowed to carry on with his life like nothing happened.

What a clown.

– The 2022 NFL Draft is over and it’s never to early to look at next year’s draft. For that, I present to you Christian D’Andrea’s very early 2023 mock draft.

– Speaking of bad umps, this video shows the NSFW things Aaron Boone said to one while being ejected after an Aaron Judge strike out call.

– Did someone say something about bad umps?? Look at what happened to Marcel Ozuna yesterday against the Mets and tell me robot umps aren’t desperately needed.

– These sad photos of small crowds in Oakland should embarrass MLB.

Did an MLB umpire bait Madison Bumgarner into a first inning ejection?

This is a pretty bad look for umpire Dan Bellino

Madison Bumgarner has pitched in the Major Leagues for more than a decade. He’s known as a fiery competitor with a wicked arm. It’s why teams love him, why fans want to see him and why opponents often have trouble with his stuff.

In the first inning of Wednesday’s matinee between the Diamondbacks and Marlins, that famous temper boiled over—but the reason for it sure seemed like a deliberate attempt by an umpire looking for a reason to toss Arizona’s ace.

Here’s some quick background: After giving up a leadoff home run to Miami’s Jon Berti, MadBum bounced right back to induce pop-ups on Jesus Aguilar and Jorge Soler. The starter thought he’d ended the frame with a strikeout to Garrett Cooper, but home plate umpire Ryan Willis (rightfully) called it a ball as Bumgarner started to walk off the mound before angrily returning. After getting Cooper to fly out to right on the next pitch, MadBum walked towards the dugout to meet first base ump Dan Bellino for the routine foreign substance check after every frame. Then things went off the rails.

Many observers believe Bellino baited MadBum during the incident. A closer look at the video shows Bellino staring straight into Bumgarner’s eyes as he continues rubbing the pitcher’s hand. Bumgarner appears to sarcastically tell Bellino to “take your [expletive] time” which immediately led to him getting run from the game.

The Diamondbacks’ broadcast went back to show the difference between the foreign substance checks of Bumgarner and Marlins’ starter Elieser Hernandez and the tape speaks for itself.

Sure, Bumgarner was already angry after a disappointing inning, but that’s nothing new. He’s been in the league so long that umpires generally understand how he operates. What stands out here is how Bellino seemingly escalated things—which players and fans quickly pointed out.

No one pays to go watch umpires at work. They do pay to see generational talents like Bumgarner—especially when he’s likely making his only start in South Florida this year. Adding to the frustration is that it completely changes the outcome of the game.

The Marlins loaded the bases and plated two runs the following inning as Corbin Martin was summoned to take over on the mound with little time to warm up.

Even more unfortunate is how unlikely we are to hear Bellino’s side of things. We already know that Bumgarner would probably earn himself a fine for daring to talk about bad officiating.

The whole situation is just a confusing bummer and so easily avoidable.

MLB had a hilarious tweet for Madison Bumgarner’s 7-inning unofficial no-hitter

This performance won’t count in the MLB record books, but at least the jokes were good!

Madison Bumgarner held the Atlanta Braves to no hits through seven complete innings on Sunday, but unfortunately in the eyes of the MLB, it doesn’t officially count as one. The Arizona Diamondbacks shut out the Braves twice on Sunday, holding Atlanta to just one hit on the day, off the backs of Zac Gallen and Bumgarner’s exceptional performances on the mound.

Bumgarner, especially, had a fantastic game, going all seven innings in the second match of the double header while striking out seven batters. Thanks to the MLB’s official rules, Bumgarner won’t get credit for having a complete game no-hitter since it was not a nine-inning game, but the performance was still phenomenal all the same.

Here’s his final out from Sunday’s game, as he got Marcell Ozuna to fly out to right field.

Even though Bumgarner’s no-hitter is unofficial to the MLB, the league on social media did get in on the fun with this great tweet giving the pitcher a gold star for his efforts on Sunday.

The meme is at least a nice consolation prize for Bumgarner, who has not thrown an official nine-inning no-hitter in his MLB pitching career.

Oh well, there’s always next time!

MLB Parlay Bet Payday: Bank on this 4-way parlay bet

Looking to cash in on MLB’s 2020 Opening Day? Bank on this 4-way parlay bet in the return of baseball.

Major League Baseball returns Thursday, July 23, with two games. The New York Yankees visit the Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants face the rival Los Angeles Dodgers. The rest of MLB will throw their first pitches on the official Opening Day of Friday, July 24. Let’s get some action in on MLB’s Opening Day slate with a can’t miss four-team parlay.

MLB Opening Day Parlay: Picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday, July 21 at 3:15 p.m. ET.

San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers: UNDER 8 (-110)

SP Clayton Kershaw takes the mound on Opening Day for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons for the Dodgers. He has owned the Giants over his career with a 1.74 ERA and 350 strikeouts in 342 1/31 career innings. He has given up two or fewer runs in eight of his last 13 starts against the Giants from 2017 to 2019. In his last five Opening Day starts, Kershaw is 3-1 over 30 2/3 innings pitched, striking out 40 batters and allowing only six earned runs.

While Giants SP Johnny Cueto doesn’t have the Hall of Fame resume of Kershaw, he has pitched well in his career against the Dodgers. His record is only 4-5 in Los Angeles, but he has a 2.36 ERA and 1.066 WHIP at Dodgers Stadium.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs: CHC moneyline (-129)

It wouldn’t be a bad idea if the Brewers went with an opener in their first game. Instead, SP Brandon Woodruff will take the mound. He’s 0-0 in five appearances against the Cubs with a 6.75 ERA.

Chicago sends out SP Kyle Hendricks who was dominant at home last season with a 6-2 record in 14 starts with a 2.04 ERA and a 0.874 WHIP. He has pitched well against Milwaukee in his career as well, going 8-6 with a 3.08 ERA all-time against the Brewers. Neither team lost key contributors to their lineups and the Cubs had more production in the box in 2019.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres: SDP moneyline (-129)

The Diamondbacks signed SP Madison Bumgarner this offseason to replace the loss of former ace Zack Greinke and he gets the start on Opening Day. He has been pretty average, by his standards, in San Diego. Bumgarner is 5-7 with a 3.75 ERA in his career at Petco Park.

Arizona beat up on San Diego in 2019. They were 8-2 in their last 10 games versus the Padres and finished 15 games better than them in the NL West last season. Diego’s promising 24-year-old SP Chris Paddack pitched well in his three starts against Arizona. Paddack was 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA and struck out 20 batters over 16 2/3 innings pitched.

Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros:  HOU -1.5 run line (-139)

This is probably the chalkiest bet of the whole parlay but there’s a reason why Houston is heavily favored. The Astros had the best winning percentage against division opponents in 2019, the Mariners had the fourth-lowest. Houston has beaten Seattle in 13 straight games and won 18 of 19 meetings last season.

Seattle’s Opening Day starter is Marco Gonzales, who’s 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in his career against Houston. Expect 2019 AL Cy Young Award winner SP Justin Verlander to be in mid-season form after spending the offseason dealing with the Astros’ sign-stealing controversy and a groin injury which had him set to miss the original Opening Day.

MLB Opening Day Parlay: Payout

A $100 wager at +940 odds for this four-leg parlay would bank a profit of $940 if all four bets win.

The San Jose Giants are having a Mason Saunders rodeo night

I cannot believe this is a real thing.

Well, that didn’t take very long at all, now did it? The Giants are already poking fun at their former pitcher Madison Bumgarner and his cowboy alter ego Mason Saunders.

Over the weekend it was revealed that Bumgarner had been posing as Mason Saunders to secretly compete in rodeos which, by the way, is completely ridiculous and absolutely hilarious.

The San Jose Giants are going to have some fun with it. The San Francisco Giants’ minor league club is having a “Mason Saunders” promotion night celebrating former Giants’ and current Diamondbacks’ pitcher Madison Bumgarner and his cowboy alter ego Mason Saunders.

The Giants are giving away two free tickets to a future game to anyone who wears a rodeo outfit or a Bumgarner jersey and will have roping promotions to go along with that.

The kicker, though? It’s this absolutely A1 photoshop that comes with the promotion.

Don’t know who cooked that up overnight, but man that is some handy work.

The Giants are saying that this is just them paying respect to one of their legends, which would be a cool and fine gesture…if it was true. This is absolutely them poking a bit of fun at their former pitcher who moonlighted as a cowboy. And you know what? I’m here for it.
