Madden 23 patch notes: Update 1.004 improves stability with promises of more to come

Madden 23 still has plenty of major issues but the end may be in sight, as these patch notes promise a more major update coming soon.

Madden 23 has been out for over a month now, but there are still a lot of issues players have with the game. Despite lots of complaints and problems – with Franchise Mode being particularly troublesome – the game is still lacking a major patch to fix the issues. Unfortunately, this patch isn’t it either, but the patch notes do come with a promise that it’s on the horizon.

We’ll cover what was fixed in this update and the statement on when the next major patch is coming to save Madden 23 a bit of face two months after launch.

Hurricane Ian could impact Madden 23’s content rollout

EA Tiburon might delay certain updates due to Hurricane Ian rapidly approaching the studio’s location.

The weekly Ultimate Team content release schedule for Madden 23 might see delays due to Hurricane Ian.

On Monday, Electronic Arts (EA) revealed the Madden 23 Ultimate Team content rollout dates for updates to features like Team of the Week, Gridiron Guardians, AKA, Team Diamonds, and Legends. Each is supposed to launch Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, through Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, but those dates are not set in stone.

“Content is subject to change or experience delays due to Hurricane Ian,” EA said on Twitter.

EA goes on to mention that MaddenNFLDirect will announce any changes or delays to the schedule. As of right now, the company’s plans haven’t changed.

It’s important to note that EA Tiburon, the studio behind Madden 23, is located in Orlando, Florida. Hurricane Ian is reported to make landfall up and down the Gulf Coast soon, and many residents are preparing for hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding. Meaning EA Tiburon’s employees are likely bracing for the worst. Again, the development team will update fans if the upcoming updates receive delays.

Madden 23 came out over a month ago to a somewhat lukewarm reception. It captures John Madden’s legacy, even if certain features (or lack thereof) leave much to be desired.

Madden 23 pack strike over Ultimate Team drop rates gains traction on Twitter

Meanwhile, Madden 23 Reddit just wants EA to fix the game

Madden 23 may be off to a roaring start in terms of sales, but hundreds of unhappy fans are staging what they call a Madden 23 pack strike, where they pledge to boycott spending money on Madden Ultimate Team card packs until EA improves the current system. Several popular Madden streamers are taking part in the boycott, including Zirksee, calling for changes such as better card drop rates and alterations to the legend system. Currently, players can spend $100 or more on a promotional pack and only walk away with a quarter of what they need to assemble a full legend.

“With the massive issues going on in Madden 23 we need changes. DON’T BUY POINTS!” Zirksee said in a recent call to action on Twitter. Others quickly pointed out that the strike doesn’t mean those involved have to avoid playing the game or even earning points to spend on packs in other ways. They just hope they can cause a noticeable drop in EA’s profits, though whether that’s possible – especially with new cards releasing in the same week – remains to be seen.

Over 3,000 Twitter users retweeted Zirksee’s call, and the “#packstrike” hashtag has several thousand tweets, with more appearing every minute.

On Madden 23 Reddit, though, the narrative is somewhat different. Only one post about the pack strike exists, and most commenters agree that drop rates are far from the game’s biggest problem.

Instead, they hope EA will make more significant changes, fixing bugs, improving playability, and adjusting each mode’s balance to help even the playing field for more playbook styles.

Meanwhile, EA has made no comment about intentions to adjust Madden Ultimate Team drop rates.

Madden NFL 23 outsells all other games in the US in August

Madden NFL 23 is hugely popular in the U.S., which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

The U.S. software chart was dominated by Madden NFL 23 in August, and it is already the fifth-best-selling title of 2022, when looking at dollar sales.

VGC reports that the only games that have sold more in 2022 based on revenue are Horizon: Forbidden West, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and Elden Ring, according to the NPD Group.

Saints Row also made its debut last month, but a lukewarm reception prevented it from taking the top spot. Still, a lack of competition meant that it still took the #2 spot for the month, followed by Marvel’s Spider-Man thanks to a PC release. Spider-Man was the best-selling game for the month on Steam.

Thanks to restocks PS5 has been the most successful console during August, though the Nintendo Switch is still currently the best-selling console of 2022 to date. There are a few months for that to change, though.

There’s still some time left in September, but it was been an excellent month for games already. Recent releases like Splatoon 3 and Metal: Hellsinger have been huge successes, while FIFA 23 launches on September 30, and is likely to become the best-selling title of September in the UK, at least, if not the US.

Madden 23 patch notes: Update 1.02 isn’t as big as fans were hoping

A new patch for Madden 23 is here, but it doesn’t address any of the major problems plaguing the game right now.

Madden 23 was released just over a week ago, and the reception has been mixed at best. The game has been criticized for a large number of bugs and a perceived lack of major changes over the last few instalments in the series. This is nothing new for annual sports franchises, the last few NBA games had similar receptions, and the WWE games underwent a major overhaul after fans had finally had enough with WWE 2K20.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the major bug-fixing patch that fans were hoping for, as it fails to even scratch the surface of the game’s many issues. Rather, this patch focuses on making the experience a little smoother and a little easier for the time being, with a big round of bug fixes hopefully in the works for the coming month.

Not knowing what to do when beginning any Ultimate Team can be a daunting task at first glance, but thankfully, EA has implemented some easy challenges for players to take on first in Madden 23.

This is where you’ll need to start: completing the beginner challenges, followed by the challenges for Team Captains, Team Affinity, and Joe Burrow, will steadily improve your team.

None of these challenges are hard, as they’ll usually require you to score a TD by either rushing or passing or getting a certain number of yards. Regardless, this shouldn’t be complicated, and you’ll find yourself with a decent amount of packs, including some Headliners, which should grant you some 80+ OVR players.

Now that you’re equipped with the basics in MUT, you will want to improve your team via new players and packs. The latter is something you’ll earn throughout just playing the game, and the Field Pass, which is MUT’s version of a battle pass, is going to pay dividends towards improving your roster.

There are a whopping 140,000 coins for players to earn during Season 1, which lasts 60 days, and below are some of the main rewards players should grind toward by playing MUT.

While at first glance playing Madden is rather easy, there’s some nerdy insider information that veterans of the series have gotten into in recent years that will help you get ahead.

Playbooks are one of these methods, as rather than using the pre-generated ones allocated to your Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) or Franchise, you can use any team’s book on both sides of the ball.

This can open up a realm of opportunities for players. We’ve seen the list flux each year, and for Madden 23, we’re going to run over the best ones to use on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

Madden 23 captures John Madden’s legacy and the history of football

John Madden’s legacy is done justice in Madden 23.

As I mentioned in my Madden 23 review, although it is a disappointing game that is nevertheless a pretty good foundation for future iterations, it did do one thing right — it captured Madden’s love for football as well as a video game could.

Madden 23 features a game mode called the “John Madden Legacy Game”, which pits football players from multiple eras against each other in an NFC vs AFC match-up.

Coaching both teams is John Madden himself. Throughout the game, you’ll be treated to a condensed history lesson surrounding Madden and his rise to football fame. While the commentary can be tough to hear while you’re focusing on the game, the trip into the past is shown a lot of love. Alongside the facts about John Madden, you’ll also get a neat, but short, tribute halftime show to the man as well.

Madden has, in some capacity up until his retirement in 2009, been a commentator for football games since 1979. That is 30 years, three whole decades, of a familiar face and voice lending his expertise to a national pastime. His affinity for using the “telestrator”, which is a device that allowed him to draw over the footage, brought his commentary to life.

Madden’s unique commentary became so popular that it leaked into other communities as well — World of Warcraft players would regularly compare certain rotations to “John F*****g Madden” based on how complicated the flowchart appeared, or Moonbase Alpha where the text-to-speech tool would allow players to spam John Madden to other players. When Madden passed away last year, many would return to YouTube videos to pay tribute for his contributions to the world.

I said this before, but football is a rich tapestry of history — and not just sports history. Everything from genuinely baffling calls (such as a 4th and 1 punt from the opponent’s 34-yard line) to actual, genuinely good policy being introduced (such as Michael Vick’s Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act, which prohibits people from attending animal fighting shows or bringing minors to them) springing up as a result of the actions, and remorse, of a controversial player.

Football is inextricably linked to American life. When Colin Kaepernick protested the cruelty BIPOC suffer at the hands of police daily, he was shoved out to pasture by the NFL. This sparked a nationwide debate, usually between racists and normal, everyday people, about the role of politics within football — or more specifically, the demand that football players “shut up and play” instead of voicing their opinions. It wasn’t limited to football fans — I distinctly remember people who did not care about sports in the slightest cannonballing their way into a conversation about the “proper way” to protest.

So with all that in mind, it’s no wonder that someone who is as loved and well-known as John Madden became a household name for many in the ‘90s and ‘00s. Yes, he won a Super Bowl as the head coach of the Raiders, and yes, he was a very talented coach who never had a losing season. Those are important facts, but they are dwarfed by his status as a commentator, as the face of the Madden video games, and most important of all, his love for football itself.

Madden 23: Franchise Mode tips and tricks

A few tips and tricks to get you settled in.

As with every Madden release since ‘99, Franchise Mode features a unique way to enjoy some pigskin, with you taking control as either a Head Coach, a Star Player, or a Team Owner, and micromanaging decisions to get your team to the top. Madden 23 changed the formula a little bit with Franchise Mode, so we’ve got a few tips and tricks to get you settled in.

First off, the key differences between the game modes:

Head Coach – The standard Franchise mode. Draft and call plays, make trades, conduct negotiations and scouting attempts, and more.
Player – You only control one Player on one Team. This differs from Face of the Franchise a little bit, but the similarities are close enough.
Owner – You manage and coach your team, as well as set prices and micromanage feedback. The key distinction is if you ever plan to relocate your team anywhere, you must be an Owner to do so. You will not be able to relocate if you are a Player or Head Coach.

Once you load in and select a team to represent, you choose either Staff Builder or Team Builder, which confer bonuses to either your Staff selection or your Team selection talent trees. You can choose whichever one you feel comfortable with.
