Ryan Jensen is back, but who starts at left guard for the Bucs on Monday night?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their Pro Bowl center back, but a huge question mark at left guard for Monday night’s wild-card game

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers delivered some big news Monday morning, activating Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen from injured reserve.

Jensen is expected to start Monday night’s wild-card playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys, giving the Bucs offense a massive boost heading into their most important game of the year (so far).

But while Jensen’s return clears up the center position for Monday night, what about the left guard spot?

Nick Leverett has held that job down for most of the season, and acquitted himself well, but he’s listed as doubtful for Monday night’s game due to multiple injuries.

The next option would seem to be Robert Hainsey, who has started at center all season long in Jensen’s stead, but he’s also dealing with a hamstring injury, and is listed as questionable on the Bucs’ final injury report.

That could force the Bucs to go back to rookie second-round pick Luke Goedeke, who was the Week 1 starter at left guard, but struggled mightily every time he’s been in the lineup so far this year. The transition from playing right tackle at Central Michigan to left guard in the NFL has been a rocky one for Goedeke, and might not inspire a ton of confidence from Bucs fans if he’s thrust back into the starting lineup for a playoff game.

Jensen’s return is obviously a huge boost for this unit, but if Goedeke has to start at left guard Monday night as a last resort, the Bucs still might have to deal with some problems up front unless the rookie steps up his game in a big way.

Bucs WR Russell Gage, G Luke Goedeke ruled out for Sunday vs. Browns

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without two members of their offense for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without two members of their offense for Week 12.

Wide receiver Russell Gage and left guard Luke Goedeke have both been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, head coach Todd Bowles confirmed to the media Friday.

Gage has been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury dating back to training camp, while Goedeke is still nursing the foot injury that has kept him out for mutiple weeks.

Defensive lineman Vita Vea has been limited by a foot injury of his own throughout this week, but Bowles said he’ll test it out on Sunday to see whether or not he can play.

Bucs plan to keep rotating Luke Goedeke, Nick Leverett at left guard

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers plan to rotate Luke Goedeke and Nick Leverett at left guard again this week

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had an odd strategy in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, rotating rookie Luke Goedeke and Nick Leverett at left guard throughout the game.

Goedeke got the start, as he has all season up to this point, with Leverett alternating on certain drives.

Speaking to the media Monday, Bucs head coach Todd Bowles confirmed that will be the plan again Thursday night, when the Bucs host the Baltimore Ravens.

Goedeke is dealing with an injury, but Bowles said if he’s healthy enough to play the second-round pick out of Central Michigan will get the start, but rotate throughout the game with Leverett again.

Bucs bench rookie G Luke Goedeke during Panthers game

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are switching gears at left guard after the rookie’s early-season struggles

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying something different at left guard, benching rookie Luke Goedeke in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

Nick Leverett has replaced Goedeke, giving the Bucs a little more experience at the left guard spot.

A second-round pick out of Central Michigan, Goedeke played right tackle in college, but earned the starting left guard job during training camp after the surprising retirement of Pro Bowler Ali Marpet.

Luke Goedeke wins Bucs’ starting left guard job for 2022

Rookie second-round pick Luke Goedeke will be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ starting left guard this year

For the first time in eight years, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t have Ali Marpet lining up at left guard to start a season.

In his place will be a player who hasn’t played a single regular-season snap in the NFL.

Luke Goedeke, the Bucs’ second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, has won the starting job, head coach Todd Bowles told the media following Monday’s practice.

The Bucs traded up to land Goedeke, who played right tackle at Central Michigan, and won a tight battle throughout training camp against the likes of Aaron Stinnie, Nick Leverett and Brandon Walton.

Goedeke won’t be the only new face protecting Tom Brady this year, as Shaq Mason replaces Alex Cappa at right guard, and Robert Hainsey starts in place of injured Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen.

Bucs OC Byron Leftwich praises rookies Rachaad White, Luke Goedeke

Hear from Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich on two of his new rookies

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent most of their top picks in the 2022 NFL draft to help bolster their depth on offense at multiple positions, hoping to guard against some of the injuries that hindered their failed repeat run at another Lombardi Trophy last year.

In the second round, the Bucs traded up for Central Michigan offensive lineman Luke Goedeke. In the third round, they added a big-play threat out of the backfield in Arizona State running back Rachaad White.

As the Bucs head into their final preseason game, and look ahead to the regular season, offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich likes what he’s seeing from both Goedeke and White:

Goedeke appears to be the front-runner to land the starting left guard job, partly due to a season-ending knee injury suffered by veteran Aaron Stinnie, while White is expected to challenge for the third-down role behind Leonard Fournette.

Both rookies are in line for potentially significant roles this season, and could have a big impact on helping the Bucs get back to the Super Bowl.

Bucs still have ‘open competition’ for starting left guard spot

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers still have a tight battle taking place for one of their starting spots in the offensive trenches

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost both of their starting offensive guards this offseason, with Ali Marpet’s shocking retirement, and Alex Cappa signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency.

Trading for a quality veteran in Shaq Mason filled Cappa’s spot on the right side, but Marpet’s absence on the left gave way to a wide-open race to claim a rare opening in the starting lineup for a Super Bowl contender.

Rookie Luke Goedeke is battling with returning veterans like Aaron Stinnie for that job, and though the more experienced players appear to be getting more reps with the first-team unit, the second-round pick from Central Michigan is still in the thick of the race.

After Friday’s practice, Bucs head coach Todd Bowles acknowledged the while the veterans might be getting more of the early snaps, it’s still an open competition heading into the preseason.

ā€œHe still gets in the mix,” Bowles said of Goedeke. “The other guys have been here. Experience-wise, as we install, they kind of know it already. Itā€™s good for Luke to see somebody do it before he does it, rather than just go out there and just make a mistake that way. Weā€™re getting the older guys in there some that [have] been here. As he gets experience, heā€™ll play a lot. Itā€™s still an open competition.ā€

Performance in the preseason games is sure to go a long way towards deciding who replaces Marpet when the Bucs line up against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

Bucs sign 2nd-round pick Luke Goedeke

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed second-round draft pick Luke Goedeke to his four-year rookie contract

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have locked up another member of their 2022 NFL draft class, signing second-round pick Luke Goedeke to his rookie contract.

Goedeke, a versatile offensive lineman from Central Michigan, is expected to compete with Aaron Stinnie, Robert Hainsey and Nick Leverett for the starting left guard job.

The contract is a four-year deal that’s fully guaranteed.

Luke Goedeke brings ‘controlled rage’ to Bucs’ offensive line

Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-round pick Luke Goedeke’s style of play should fit right in with his new teammates

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded up in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft to make sure they landed Central Michigan offensive lineman Luke Goedeke, and his playing style should be a perfect fit for his new position group.

Speaking to the media after Saturday’s rookie minicamp session, Goedeke talked about his penchant for trash-talking, as well as the physical style of play he exhibits on the field.

ā€œIā€™ll throw in a few little word-jabs here and there,” Goedeke said. “I mean, if the refs start saying something, then Iā€™ll stop. [With] my play-style, I like to play with what I like to call ā€˜controlled rage.ā€™ I donā€™t like to push my limits too far where it draws penalties, obviously, because thatā€™s just detrimental to the team. Like you said, itā€™s teetering on a fine line. I believe I play just on the good side of that line where I donā€™t draw very many penalties whatsoever.ā€

That style should make him feel right at home next to the likes of Bucs Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen, as Goedeke competes with incumbents Aaron Stinnie, Robert Hainsey and Nick Leverett for the starting left guard job vacated by Ali Marpet’s surprising retirement this offseason.

Ravens add talent in latest two-round mock draft by CBS Sports

The Ravens added talented players in the latest two-round mock draft by CBS Sports

The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up for the 2022 NFL draft, and currently hold 10 draft picks. There are many different directions that the team could decide to in each time they’re on the clock, especially with the No. 14th overall selection, which is higher than Baltimore is generally accustomed to selecting in the first round.

In his latest two-round 2022 NFL mock draft, Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports has the Ravens taking a talented player on both sides of the ball with Baltimore’s first two selections. First off at No. 14, Wilson has the Ravens selecting former Florida State edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II, talking about how Johnson would become a running mate for outside linebacker Odafe Oweh.

“After transferring from Georgia, Johnson has a fantastic season at Florida State. And he told us at the combine that he felt like he had something to prove going from the SEC to the ACC. He did that and then some, then he dominated the Senior Bowl, and followed that up with an electric workout in Indy. The Ravens drafted Odafe Oweh a year ago and he’ll get a running mate with Johnson here.”

Next, Wilson has Baltimore taking former Central Michigan offensive tackle Luke Goedeke. The 6-foot-5, 310 pound offensive lineman projects as more of a utility player at the NFL level, but is a strong player that has a good anchor.

Addressing edge rusher and the offensive line in the first two rounds of the draft would be a good investment. Outside of those two positions, cornerback could be another big need that the Ravens could look to add early on, but Johnson and Goedeke would be a solid start to Baltimore’s 2022 rookie class.
