LSU vs Texas A&M: Who are the experts picking to win

Who are the experts going with?

It all comes down to this. The final regular-season game in the Ed Orgeron era. Last week against ULM, Orgeron became the fourth coach in school history to win 50 games. His overall LSU record sitting at 50-20, can he get to win No. 51 on Saturday night?

To do it, the LSU Tigers will need to beat Texas A&M and Jimbo Fisher. The former LSU assistant has been linked to the job opening ever since week one following the loss to UCLA. In 2017 the Aggies lost at UCLA to begin that season and ended up with Fisher as their head coach after the season. Wouldn’t that be something? To do it again? Not likely but with Fisher in town, perfect timing for his friend Scott Woodward to interview him.

The Aggies are currently 8-3 and could easily get to 10 wins after the LSU game and their bowl. The Tigers are 5-6 and a victory could help avoid their first losing season since 1999. Following that campaign over 20 years ago they fired their head coach. Orgeron has already been given his walking papers and looks to avoid setting another historic marker in LSU history. But can they do it?

We look at how the experts see it:

LSU vs Texas A&M: The ‘Tale of the Tape’ for the season finale

Who has the edge between LSU and Texas A&M?

Saturday night in Death Valley could very well be the last time we see head coach Ed Orgeron on the sideline. Should the Tigers lose and miss bowl season, his era as the head coach will officially come to an end.

It will be an emotional game for the native from Louisiana. He came home to lead the LSU Tigers to a national championship in 2019. Plenty of speculation has been with Jimbo Fisher potentially coming back to the Bayou. He is adamant that he isn’t leaving College Station but that hasn’t stopped anyone from talking about it.

As far as the actual game on the field, the Aggies are looking for their ninth win of the season and secure their spot as the No. 3 team in the SEC West. In the grand scheme of things that doesn’t mean much but it would give them a better bowl destination.

The Tigers are looking to avoid their first losing season since 1999. Can they do the unthinkable and pull off an upset at home against their border rivals? ESPN’s Football Power Index has the win probability for the Tigers at 38.4%.

So you’re telling me there is a chance?

Let’s take a look at the tale of the tape in this one.

Ed Orgeron praises Austin Deculus ahead of his school record 60th start

Ed Orgeron had high praise for Austin Deculus as he is about to make LSU history.

Offensive lineman Austin Deculus will play in his 60th game this Saturday against Texas A&M, becoming the first LSU football player ever to do so in program history.

Ed Orgeron talked about how important his relationship with Deculus has been and how Deculus is one of the all-time greats for LSU.

“Austin is a very hard worker. He’s a great player. Started his first game in the Swamp as a freshman when we won. He’s always been there for me. Anytime I needed him… Think about all the great Tigers that have played, and he’s played more than any of them. That tells you how tough he is, he’s a great young man who was raised right. He’s got great character. I think he’s going to be in the NFL, and hopefully he plays a long time.”

-Ed Orgeron

LSU (5-6) takes on No. 16 Texas A&M (8-3) on November 27th at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN.

LSU opens at one-score underdogs at home against Texas A&M

LSU opens as the home underdog against Texas A&M

Rivalry week has arrived with the LSU Tigers hosting the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday night in Death Valley. The Tigers need a win to get into a bowl game, the Aggies need a win to get a better bowl game. Which team will pull it off on Saturday night? Currently, the road team is the favorite according to early betting lines.

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook

Line: LSU (+6.5)

Over/Under: 45.5

Money Line: LSU (+205)/Texas A&M (-260)

Only once since 2015 has this game been determined by one possession. The Tigers have won seven of the nine games since the Aggies joined the SEC. However, Texas A&M has won two of the last three games in the series. Texas A&M hasn’t won in Baton Rouge since 1994 but as we have seen time and time again, this team is allowing teams to break the trend.

Can they keep this one going?

Kickoff time and TV network revealed for LSU vs Texas A&M

We now know when the LSU-Texas A&M game will kick off.

The LSU Tigers will have another night game in Death Valley as they are set to host UL-Monroe for their final nonconference game of the 2021 season. Looking ahead to the season finale, we have the Tigers hosting the Texas A&M Aggies. This past week they fell to Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. This coming Saturday they will play Prairie View for Senior Night.

We now know what time the game is set for the Aggies and Tigers on Senior Day in Death Valley. According to this release from the SEC, they will also play a night game.

No surprises here as the two will kick it off at night in Death Valley. LSU is looking at likely needing a win to make bowl season. They have to beat both ULM and Texas A&M. They are heavy favorites against the Warhawks.

For Texas A&M it is about getting a better bowl bid, they were on the outside looking in for the SEC title game and a potential New Years Six appearance. The loss to Ole Miss sealed their fate in that regard. Could this also be the final game between the Aggies and Tigers with Jimbo Fisher on the sidelines for the enemy?

Insider reports have stated that LSU athletic director Scott Woodward hasn’t given up on the idea of bringing the former LSU offensive coordinator back to Baton Rouge. Just another storyline to monitor. What we do know is that this will be the final regular-season game under head coach Ed Orgeron.

The win probability for the final two regular season games

Two games left, does LSU have a chance?

Despite losing five of the last six games, there is still some hope for the LSU Football team. The lone win came against a team in the Florida Gators that struggled with Samford on Saturday. Not going to style point that win since they have been hard to come by this year.

This week the Tigers get a break in the schedule, the UL-Monroe Warhawks are the first team since they played Mississippi State in late September that wasn’t ranked. It has been a rough string of games for LSU.

The team has to focus on ignoring how they got here and go 1-0 on Saturday. They will then close out the regular season against Texas A&M in the final home game of the Ed Orgeron era. Can they find a way to get into the postseason?

We breakdown how ESPN’s Football Power Index sees it:

Is LSU the scariest game remaining for Texas A&M?

Could LSU pose a threat to Texas A&M’s season?

We’ve not seen the words “LSU” and “scariest game” used in the same sentence very often this season, and if it has, it has probably not been positively spun in LSU’s direction.

247Sports writer Austin Nivison put out a list of every top 25 team’s scariest game remaining. According to the list, LSU is No. 14 Texas A&M’s scariest game remaining on the schedule.

What 247Sports Said…

The Aggies do have some tough games left, including at home against Auburn and on the road against Ole Miss, but the regular season finale against LSU will be dangerous. It’s on the road in Death Valley and will serve as a send off for Ed Orgeron. The Tigers would love to play spoiler against their SEC West rival.

ESPN’s FPI gives Texas A&M a 58.6% chance to beat LSU to end the regular season. If LSU is able to get a momentum-building win over Arkansas later this year, beating the Aggies is definitely in the realm of possibility.

Since Texas A&M joined the SEC in 2012, the Tigers have owned the series 7-2. LSU owns the overall series mark 34-22-3, the Aggies won last year 20-7 in College Station. The home team hasn’t lost a home game to the Aggies since 1994.

Breaking down Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond

Here’s a look into the signal-caller the LSU defense could have its hands full with today.

The LSU Tigers (3-3) face one of their toughest tasks of the season as they head to Kyle Field to take on the No. 5-ranked Texas A&M Aggies (5-1) with quarterback Kellen Mond at the helm.

At 6-foot-2-inches and 217 pounds, Mond isn’t a huge quarterback by any means, but his slim frame is adequate.

He’s a dual-threat quarterback, meaning he’ll give the Tigers problems both on the with his legs and on the pass, as he’s done to numerous opponents in his time in College Station.

In his most recent performance, Mond completed 16-of-26 passing attempts for 224 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Here’s a look into the signal-caller the LSU defense could have its hands full with today:

Why Texas A&M Will Win

QB Kellen Mond, your table is ready.

As good as LSU might be – whether or not it’s No. 2 in the CFP rankings or in the to spot – it’s having problems defensively.

Who have the top five defenses in college football? Ohio State, Clemson, Utah, Michigan and Georgia. Four of those teams are deep in the College Football Playoff discussion, and the other is a not-that-bad team that’s probably going to finish up in the top 15 overall.

By the way, Minnesota is tenth in the nation in total D. Where is LSU?

43rd.

It’s been able to make up for the issues with its unstoppable offense, but it’s also been playing with fire.

Mond might have thrown six touchdown passes in last year’s epic 74-72 win over the Tigers, but he wasn’t exactly on – it was the only time all season long he failed to connect on half of his throws.

This year he’s been a bit erratic, he hasn’t been huge in the bigger games, and he hasn’t had the season the team needed out of him against one of the nation’s most brutal schedules.

This is the game to make up for it.

The Aggies are going bowling, they have nothing to lose, and they can just let it rip after putting up a nice fight in a 19-13 loss at Georgia. Considering the rain throughout the first half, Mond was solid.

LSU’s secondary has allowed 200 yard or more seven times, gave up over 400 passing yards to Tua Tagovailoa and Sam Ehlinger, and now it’s Mond’s turn to come up with a signature game.

On the other side, the A&M secondary has been brilliant over the second half of the year – it hasn’t allowed a quarterback to hit half of his passes over the last five games.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why LSU Will Win

Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

It’s Joe Burrow’s Heisman to lose, but it’s a 5-9, 209-pound pinball of a running back who’s been the closer.

It took just six carries or Edwards-Helaire to go 188 yards with three touchdowns last week against Arkansas to make it four straight 100-yard games, and now he has to be a difference-maker to at least make the A&M defense worry about the ground game.

The Aggies have been great against the run lately, but they had their problems against the teams that committed to the ground game – Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn. That’s where Edwards-Helaire comes in.

Burrow will be Burrow. He’s been able to produce against the Florida secondary, the Alabama defense, and everyone else thrown at him – he’ll hit his normal share of big plays this week. But when the team has needed to put games away with a few grinding moments to move the chains, it’s been Edwards-Helaire.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, good … luck.

How are we supposed to enjoy whatever is about to happen in Baton Rouge after the last game these two played?

The 74-72, seven-overtime thing that went on the last time these two played was a hoot, but this time around it’s even more important.

LSU can go from the nation’s absolute No. 1 team to out of the College Football Playoff if it loses this week and then gets dropped by Georgia in the SEC Championship.

On the other side, A&M is already bowl eligible, but after already having to play Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Auburn – and losing all four games – this would be the signature win in the Jimbo Fisher era.

Yes, even more than what happened last year.

But LSU’s defense will answer the call with one of its better performances, considering the circumstances.

Don’t be surprised if being dropped to No. 2 by the College Football Playoff committee lights a wee bit of a fire under a team that doesn’t exactly have a problem with motivation.

Burrow and the Tiger O will be fine, but they’ll have to battle to put the game away late – A&M’s style and pace will be a problem. The slightly-maligned D will rock against the run, and the secondary won’t let Mond do anything too special.

It’ll be fun. Just not seven-overtime fun.
