Stephen Jones dishes on Ed Orgeron and the LSU-Arkansas game

Cowboys COO Stephen Jones discusses LSU-Arkansas with former Tiger Bryan Broaddus.

Former LSU Tiger Bryan Broaddus, now a radio host for 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, spoke with former Arkansas Razorback Stephen Jones. Jones is the Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Cowboys and the father of John Stephen Jones. John Stephen is a third generational football player from the family to play for the Hogs.

The youngest Jones is currently a backup quarterback behind KJ Jefferson and Malik Hornsby. When discussing the game set for Saturday night in Death Valley, Broaddus apologized for the beer that will be thrown in Baton Rouge.

Broaddus: “I’d like to maybe apologize for the beer that’s going to be thrown on you tomorrow in Baton Rouge. You probably deserve it. So, wear it with some pride, and, you know, hopefully that team in purple and gold takes care of your bunch. How about that?”

Jones: “Well, I hope the team in purple and gold doesn’t. I hope my Razorbacks get the Tigers tomorrow. But I’m a big fan of Ed Orgeron. He’s a friend. He was my strength coach in college when I played ball, and think the world of him, and know they’ve had their share of injuries this year, but have nothing but the utmost respect. And, of course, what an amazing place to play college football. I was just on the phone with my son. You get fired up when you go into that stadium down there. Sharon and I are looking forward to being there, and you got great fans and we look forward to the game.”

LSU vs Arkansas: Staff predictions and expert picks

Who are the experts picking to win?

The LSU Tigers are one step closer to bowl eligibility, all they have to do is win ‘The Boot’ on Saturday.

Getting to the needed six wins didn’t seem that far away just five weeks ago, but since that time LSU is 1-4. During that same stretch, the once-hot Arkansas Razorbacks are just one game better at 2-3. Last week against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, the Hogs became bowl eligible with a three-point victory.

Given what is on the table, can LSU and head coach Ed Orgeron come away victorious? Orgeron is a perfect 5-0 against Arkansas. A look at how the staff and industry experts expect this game to go on Saturday Night in Death Valley.

LSU vs Arkansas: Five reasons the Tigers knock off the Hogs

Five reasons to believe LSU gets one step closer to bowl eligibility on Saturday.

Saturday night in Death Valley. SEC football. Postseason eligibility is up for grabs.

The LSU Tigers have an opportunity to get out of the SEC West cellar with a win over the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Bayou Bengals need two wins in their final three games to become eligible for the postseason, which starts on Saturday night.

The game against ULM feels like your best opportunity for one of those wins, leaving the Arkansas and Texas A&M games. Can they knock off a conference foe to get there?

As we look to Saturday, we break down five reasons the LSU Tigers can get it done against the Hogs.

LSU vs Arkansas: Wide Receiver Tale of the Tape

Looking at this weekend’s wide receiver matchup.

LSU is preparing for the sixth-consecutive game against a ranked opponent now that the Arkansas Razorbacks are No. 25 in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Tigers need another solid defensive effort to slow down the trio of KJ Jefferson, Trelon Smith, and Treylon Burks. LSU counters with Max Johnson/Garrett Nussmeier, Ty Davis-Price, and Jack Bech.

With the focus on the offensive side of the ball, we have previewed both the quarterbacks and running backs in this matchup. Eyes turn to the pass catchers, do the Tigers have a player who can compete with Burks?

How the two receivers compare

48 Rec 33
73.8 Catch % 62.3
799 Yards 366
16.6 YPR 11.1
8 TDs 2

Edge: Treylon Burks

The clear edge in this matchup goes to Burks, who has shown of the past two seasons to be one of the most consistent pass-catchers in the SEC. The real question in this matchup is can the Tigers’ secondary slow down the big play ability of Burks.

With no Sage Ryan, Eli Ricks, and Derek Stingley Jr, the task is tall. Cordale Flott is trying to get back from injury. Dwight McGlothern will likely be tasked with trying to limit his impact. Against  Alabama on Saturday, the secondary gave up 233 yards and two touchdowns to Jameson Williams and John Metchie. Burks will likely look to take advantage in the same regard. It will be up to the pass rush to disrupt Jefferson in the pocket.

LSU vs Arkansas: Running back’s Tale of the Tape

Who has the better running back? Ty Davis-Price vs Trelon Smith

The LSU Tigers have an opportunity to get one step closer to bowl eligibility, to do so they need to beat Arkansas. The Razorbacks earned their bowl eligibility last week after their three-point win over Mississippi State.

With the loss of Kayshon Boutte earlier this season, more focus has been on the running game and playing complementary football. Davis-Price has been on a mission over the last four games on the ground. Even going as far as setting the school rushing record against the Florida Gators.

We break down the running back battle between Ty Davis-Price and Arkansas’ Trelon Smith.

Edge: Ty Davis-Price

On a pure one-for-one basis the edge goes for Ty Davis-Price. He has the better numbers and has really come on strong since the Kentucky game. After starting the year with just 141 yards in five games, Davis-Price has tallied 591 yards over the last four games. That breaks down to 6.03 yards per attempt.

TDP has been a major driving force for the offense despite three of the four games resulting in a loss. With no Kayshon Boutte, TDP has stepped up for Ed Orgeron’s offense.

Press Conference Notes: LSU quarterbacks and injuries

Injury notes and what caused the staff to consider Garrett Nussmeier to play at quarterback.

According to the Daily Advertiser in Lafayette, both Garrett Nussmeier and his father Doug pleaded to the coaching staff to let him play. Doug is currently the quarterback’s coach for the Dallas Cowboys, he also spent time with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, and Michigan Wolverines before moving to the NFL.

Garrett Nussmeier pleaded with LSU coach Ed Orgeron on Sunday. Patience had turned to anger for the freshman quarterback. Nussmeier was tired of watching. Forget a redshirt. He wanted to help the Tigers win now.

Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, who doubles as Garrett’s father, made the same pitch to LSU offensive coordinator Jake Peetz.

During Monday’s press conference with head coach Ed Orgeron, discussed the current quarterback situation. He stated that Max Johnson is the starter but Garrett Nussmeier would see significant snaps against Arkansas. The interesting note is that the next game Nuss plays in will be his last if they want to maintain his redshirt status.

“Jake and I talked about it this morning and we haven’t decided exactly how we’re gonna do it in a game. It might be first quarter-second quarter, maybe a couple series, it all depends on how practice goes and how the game plan is.” – Ed Orgeron on the LSU two-quarterback system

Ed Orgeron: Garrett Nussmeier to receive playing time vs Arkansas

Garrett Nussmeier will see the field against Arkansas on Saturday.

It seems like a lot of LSU fans have been waiting for this.

Ed Orgeron announced earlier today in a press conference that Max Johnson will remain LSU’s starting quarterback against Arkansas, but Backup Garrett Nussmeier will be receiving playing time against the Hogs. Whoever performs better will stay in the game.

There has been a portion of the fan base that has been calling for Nussmeier to play due to the lack of performance from Max Johnson. It seems they’re finally getting their wish.

Nussmeier is a four-star pro-style quarterback from Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. He was one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects coming out of high school, earning four stars from 247 Sports, ESPN and Rivals. He was ranked as the 13th best prospect at his position nationally by ESPN as well as being the No. 9 prospect overall in Texas and No. 61 overall.

[lawrence-related id=29491,29468,29456]

If Johnson isn’t moving this offense early, Nussmeier will certainly get the call.

Kickoff time, TV channel announced for LSU vs Arkansas

LSU gets yet another night game at home when the Razorbacks come to town.

No playing around from the SEC this week. We’ve got official kickoff times.

LSU vs Arkansas will kick off at 6:30 p.m. central time on SEC Network, according to the SEC. LSU is currently 4-4, 2-3 in the SEC, whereas Arkansas is 5-3, 1-3 in the SEC. ESPN’s FPI gives LSU a 55.9% chance to win at home against the Razorbacks.

Arkansas had lost three straight before getting an easy win over Arkansas Pine-Bluff at home. All three losses were to Top 25 teams (Georgia, Ole Miss, and Auburn). LSU has lost three of their last four as well, again all to top 25 competition (Auburn, Kentucky, and Ole Miss).

LSU currently holds a 42-22-2 all-time record over the Razorbacks. The Tigers have won the past five matchups by an average of 19.4 points per game.

Should LSU win this game, their hopes of going bowling would increase significantly, as they would only need a win over Louisiana Monroe to reach six wins by the end of the regular season.

Why LSU Will Win

LSU showed up late.

It battled hard well in a gut-check 76-73 win over Ole Miss that went down to the final moments. The Tigers were solid at coming up with enough assists to matter, hit 44% from the field, and they kept the turnovers to a minimum.

Now they have to hold up under the Arkansas pressure – they had no problem with that in a mid-January 92-76 win.

They were unstoppable from the field, dominated on the boards, and they were relentless – which is a must against this high-powered team.

LSU has one of the few offenses around that can hang punch for punch, scoring in a variety of way inside and out and on the move. However …

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hogs came up with a win in the second game 83-75 just a few weeks ago. They ramped up the D a bit, controlled the glass, and it all continued as the offense scored more than 80 points in six of its  last seven games before the SEC Tournament.

They then showed they could grind it out a bit in a 70-64 win over Missouri. They’ll do whatever is needed, but the LSU defense allowed 80 points or more in four games in five before getting by Ole Miss. Arkansas has the scoring punch to keep on firing, and do it better.

What’s Going To Happen

LSU might be able to shoot from anywhere, but Arkansas will get the O going just a little bit more.

Expect a fantastic and fun up-and-down game with a whole lot of mood and momentum swings, but with Arkansas going on a burst down the stretch to finally pull this off.

LSU (14-7) vs Arkansas (18-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why LSU Will Win

Let’s just call the 91-78 loss to Georgia an aberration.

The offense continues to score in bunches with the ability pump in points inside and out, but the Tigers couldn’t hit from three or from the line against the Dawgs.

Now, the defense isn’t going to be anything great, but as long as it’s able to keep hitting around 47% from the field, it’ll be fine – and that seems to be the deal.

The Tigers had won their last 13 games when making 45% or more of their shots from the field, and are 0-6 on the season when they don’t.

Arkansas has allowed 44% or more from the field in each of its last three games and 43% or more in eight of the last nine.

Why Arkansas Will Win

LSU is going to to get whacked on the boards.

Arkansas comes up with enough defensive pressure to be an issue for an LSU offense that doesn’t move it around all that much, but the real key is its ability to hit the glass hard.

The Tigers might have the scoring firepower, but no one in the SEC wins games in more dominant fashion than the Hogs, including an 81-66 victory over Alabama a few days ago. They lead the league in scoring margin, won their last eight SEC games, and …

What’s Going To Happen

They got whacked by LSU 92-76 back in mid-January. And why?

They were destroyed on the boards, didn’t shoot well, and allowed the Tigers to hit 52% from the field. Expect all of those things to flip this time around.
