Texas A&M alumna Chennedy Carter scores 23 points to lead Sky past Caitlin Clark and Fever

A powerful pairing has formed on the Chicago Sky between two SEC alumnae, Texas A&M and LSU graduates, Chennedy Carter and Angel Reese.

A powerful pairing has formed in Chicago between two SEC alumnae, Angel Reese and Texas A&M graduate Chennedy Carter.

The dynamic duo danced to “Not Like Us,” by rapper Kendrick Lamar on Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Arena following an 88-87 victory versus Caitlin Clark and Indiana. The Sky (6-9) had lost two previous matchups against the Fever (7-11), 91-83 on June 16 and 71-70 on June 1.

Carter and Reese combined for 48 points to avoid allowing Indiana to clinch the season series. After three games in just over three weeks, the final regular season matchup will be on Aug. 30 in the Windy City.

In 29 minutes on the floor, Carter tallied 23 points on 8-of-12 field goal attempts, 1-of-1 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. The fifth-year shooting guard added 5 assists, 2 rebounds and a game-high +12 plus/minus.

Reese racked up her eighth straight double-double, which is a WNBA record. The LSU grad recorded game-highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds.

Carter and Chicago host the reigning back-to-back champion Las Vegas Aces on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Oklahoma Women’s Basketball SEC opponents for 2024-2025 released

Oklahoma Sooners Women’s Basketball SEC opponents for the 2024-2025 season revealed.

The back-to-back Big 12 champions take their conference crown into a new challenge in the 2024-2025 season when they make their first run through the SEC. Jennie Baranczyk’s crew will face new foes, including a pair of the best women’s basketball teams in the country.

On Tuesday, the SEC revealed the conference opponent breakdown for the first year in the expanded conference.

The Sooners will welcome Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, and Texas A&M. The Sooners will face Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, South Carolina, and Tennessee on the road.

Surprisingly, the Sooners will only face the Texas Longhorns one time next season, with the conference opting to play a home-and-home series between the Sooners and the Missouri Tigers.

Baranczyk and her staff have built a strong program over the last several seasons and earned a big-time commitment from [autotag]Raegan Beers[/autotag] this offseason. Beers provides a great frontcourt presence to a team that is returning a ton of talent from last year’s squad.

The SEC features some of the best basketball programs and coaches in the country like South Carolina, who went undefeated in 2023-2024 and won the national championship. LSU won the national championship the year before and lost to Iowa in the elite eight last season. Tennessee is one of the greatest programs of all time with eight national titles from 1987 to 2008.

After defeating LSU 73-69, Texas A&M has steadily risen in the newest NET Rankings

Texas A&M earned its second SEC win over the LSU Tigers on Saturday afternoon, giving way to a slight increase in the Aggies’ Net Ranking.

Texas A&M narrowly defeated the LSU Tigers 73-69 inside a packed Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday afternoon, earning their second win in SEC play behind a collective team effort, led by star guard Wade Taylor IV’s 19 points, all coming in the second half.

After another slow start, falling 9-0 in the first five minutes, Taylor incurred multiple fouls, sending him to the bench for most of the first half. Needing the rest of the starting unit to step up, veteran guard Tyrece Radford (15 points, 9 rebounds) and transfer guard Jace Carter (13 points, 6 rebounds) provided enough offensive production, including six 3-pointers, to keep pace with the Tiger’s hot shooting day.

However, scoring was not the story behind the Aggies’ success, as senior forward Andersson Garcia (10 points, 10 rebounds) led the way for his third double-double of the year, helping out-rebound LSU 48-34, with 21 offensive rebounds compared to the Tiger’s 6. For reference, A&M is the country’s No. 1-ranked offensive rebounding team, averaging nearly 19 offensive boards per contest.

While the Aggies’ 11-7 (2-3 SEC) record is underwhelming on its face, Texas A&M holds an impressive 4-4 Quad 1 win record. At the same time, only four teams (Purdue, Arizona, UConn, Wisconsin) have more Quad 1 victories on the year. With the win, A&M has also risen five spots in the newest NET Rankings from 44th to 39th and is on the verge of hitting their stride as the SEC with two consecutive home games against Missouri and Ole Miss this week.

Note: If LSU continues to stack wins in conference play, Saturday’s win could result in the Aggies’ 5th Quad 1 victory at the end of the regular season.

Texas A&M will return home on January 23 to take on the Missouri Tigers at 8:00 PM CST in Reed Arena. The game will air on the SEC Network.

Best Photos: Texas A&M’s 73-69 road win over LSU

Photos: Here are some of the best photos from Saturday’s game against the LSU Tigers

Texas A&M (11-7, 2-3 SEC) evens the series at one apiece with a win on the road over the LSU Tigers (11-7, 3-2 SEC) on Saturday afternoon.

Outside of the Kentucky victory, we have not seen the Aggies put together a complete game since SEC play began. Well, their win over LSU was as closer to what we witnessed against the Wildcats compared to the Razorbacks. Wade Taylor IV spent the majority of his time on the bench in foul trouble, but the rest of the team answered the call keeping the game in reach.

Jace Carter and Tyrece Radford were able to hit some big shots in key moments until Taylor reentered the game in the second half. He came in blazing hot, scoring a majority of the points to start the frame. Two of the last three games look much more like a Buzz Williams coached team. Sitting at 2-3 in conference play the Aggies are in a good position to make a run if they can keep themselves in play for the SEC and NCAA tournaments.

Texas A&M will return home on January 23 to take on the Missouri Tigers at 8:00 PM CST in Reed Arena.

‘I know we have our best chance when we follow the recipe’ Everything Buzz Williams had to say after the win over LSU

Here’s what Texas A&M Head Coach Buzz Williams had to say after the win in Baton Rogue.

Texas A&M (11-7, 2-3 SEC) evens the series at one apiece with a win on the road over the LSU Tigers (11-7, 3-2 SEC) on Saturday afternoon.

I’m not sure what to think about this Texas A&M team. They showed today that even if Wade Taylor IV misses half the game because of foul trouble, the rest of the team can keep it together.

It wasn’t perfect as they struggled from the charity stripe, going 11-20, but they dominated in second-chance points with an astounding 27-0 advantage. Everyone stepped up this game, and hopefully, they can lean on the experience from this contest to keep marching in the correct direction.

Rebounding was the key difference in this game. The disparity in the second-chance points is a huge takeaway between the first meeting and the second. After the game, coach Buzz Williams spent a lot of time reviewing how much emphasis he put on getting boards when coming to the Maravich Assembly Center.

“They beat us on the glass at their place they had 14 offensive rebounds we had 13. They beat us on the defensive glass they beat
us yeah and that hadn’t been happening at all so today we beat them we beat them on the offensive glass 21 to 6 they beat us on the defensive glass 28 to 27 but we offensive rebounded 43% of our misses and we defensive rebounded 82% “

Post Game: Texas A&M get back in the win column with a 73-69 over the LSU Tigers

Texas A&M gets a big win on the road for their second SEC win on the season beating LSU by four

Texas A&M (11-7, 2-3 SEC) evens the series at one apiece with a win on the road over the LSU Tigers (11-7, 3-2 SEC) on Saturday afternoon.

It was another rough start for the Aggies, falling behind early 10-2 in the first six minutes as Wade Taylor IV picked up a quick two fouls and had to hit the bench. A&M started to find a little rhythm, with Hayden Hefner and Jace Carter knocking down a several three-pointers to pull the Aggies within three points.

A low-scoring first half played into the hands of Buzz William’s team, keeping the game close from the three-point line, as surprising as that sounds. They struggled from everywhere else offensively, however, and perimeter defense continued to be an issue to close out the half. However, with Taylor spending most of the first half sitting due to foul trouble, the Aggies went into halftime in closing distance only down 34-32.

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Offensive rebounding or, better yet, tapouts gave A&M an impressive 24-0 second-chance point advantage, giving way to a 9-3 run led by a quick seven points from Taylor, giving A&M a 42-38 lead early and forcing LSU to take a timeout. A spirited few minutes and open three-pointers let the Tigers claw back in it to take a 51-52 lead.

Texas A&M stormed back with their own run that was highlighted by tough defense and, you guessed it, offensive rebounding to pull back up 59-54 with under nine minutes remaining. With Taylor getting his fourth foul, Buzz had to sit him, and LSU took advantage, hitting back-to-back threes to go up 65-63 as the team traded runs.

The game remained tight until the final seconds ticked down, as Taylor hit two big free throws to put the Aggies up 72-69 with 12 seconds remaining. LSU responded by penetrating to the basket, and great defense by Solomon Washington denied the score and forced an essential game-sealing foul. He would hit one of two free throws to close the contest and give the A&M a 73-69 win.

Below are the Aggies critical contributors from the game:

Wade Taylor IV:  19 points / 5 rebounds / 4 assists

Tyrece Radford:  15 points / 9 rebounds

Jace Carter:  13 points / 6 rebounds

Andersson Garcia:  10 points / 10 rebounds

NOTE: Henry Coleman III was back in the lineup after missing the Arkansas game

How to watch: Texas A&M vs. LSU basketball game

The Aggies will get back on track when the travel to Bayton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers

Texas A&M (10-7, 1- SEC) will be on the road to face the LSU Tigers (11-6, 3-1 SEC) at Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday at 3:00 PM CST.

The Aggies will get a second bite at the apple when they face LSU for the second time this season. In game one, A&M simply got outplayed in virtually every aspect of the game. Even when it came to their bread-and-butter, rebounding, they lost to a 46-40 difference, and in an all-too-common theme, the Aggies only shot 25.4% for the game.

Conversely, LSU has won six of their last seven games and is currently 3-1 in SEC play. They are playing really good basketball right now and hold an 8-2 record when they play at home. Below is what LSU Coach Matt McMahon had to say about the matchup.

“We are excited for this opportunity (Saturday) against a really great Texas A&M team. Quick turnaround having just played them two weeks ago. Number one offensive rebounding team in the country, they do a terrific job taking care of the basketball and getting to the free throw line. Defensively they are fantastic in disguising their coverages and that makes it really difficult to score on that end of the floor.”

Texas A&M needs to find their footing in conference play fast because dropping to 1-4 this early in the year while struggling to shoot the ball can be a difficult hole to dig themselves out of.

The A&M SEC opponents are hosting Kentucky, Florida, and Tennessee at Reed Arena to highlight the home slate. The Aggies’ road foes include Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Missouri, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt.

‘We’re on to the next game we’re ready for LSU and we’re ready to prove something’ Obaseki and Leveque speak ahead of Texas A&M vs. LSU

Here’s what Texas A&M Aggies Manny Obaseki and Wildens Leveque had to say during the LSU matchup preview.

Texas A&M (10-7, 1- SEC) will be on the road to face the LSU Tigers (11-6, 3-1 SEC) at Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday at 3:00 PM CST.

After a tough last-second loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks, a big emphasis was placed on the A&M needing to play their brand of basketball. They start that game with a lackadaisical effort, causing them to fall behind by twenty points early. If not for a career night by Wade Taylor IV and a sense of urgency kicking into the game, it would have been an embarrassing blowout.

“…our identity which is playing hard all 40 minutes. I feel like we’ve struggled to that for all 40 through multiple games and it’s shown obviously” – Manny Obaseki
“we believe in our principles and we work really hard so focusing on just working hard and our culture that’s built around you know trust work and what we do we’ll just do just fine” – Wilden Leveque

‘We do need the guys with the most experience with us to be as consistent as possible’ Buzz Williams speaks ahead of Texas A&M vs. LSU

Here’s what Texas A&M Head Coach Buzz Williams had to say during the LSU matchup preview.

Texas A&M (10-7, 1- SEC) will be on the road to face the LSU Tigers (11-6, 3-1 SEC) at Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday at 3:00 PM CST.

The Aggies will have the opportunity to avenge their opening loss against LSU on the road in a game where they must get back on track. It’s a mystery to me why A&M, outside of Wade Taylor IV, can’t score at a consistent rate to save their lives. Even Taylor has been a tad bit streaky to start the season, but at least he can bounce back in the same game to give Texas A&M a chance.

Outside of Taylor, the only other Aggie that can be counted on is reserve forward Andersson Garcia and his rebounding. Head coach Buzz Williams has also been at a loss at times when it comes to the standard of play by his team.

“I thought we had great effort in the 40 minutes against
Auburn, I thought we had great effort in the 45 minutes against
Kentucky. I did not think we had great effort in the first 10-12 minutes at Arkansas so for round numbers I would say of the 160 minutes that we’ve played 110 of them have been representative of what we hope our program is to the institution and the department, but 50 minutes has not been that.”

‘Kentucky is a hallucinogen’: Buzz Williams previews Saturday’s game versus No. 6 Wildcats

“What I told our team was ‘If Auburn is fast, Kentucky is a hallucinogen,'” Buzz Williams explained Friday. “That’s Kentucky in transition!”

The Texas A&M men’s basketball team is coming off back-to-back losses to begin SEC play and things don’t get any easier this weekend.

The Aggies (9-6, 0-2) host No. 6 Kentucky (12-2, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon. Texas A&M is coming off a 68-53 loss versus LSU on Jan. 6 and a 66-55 road defeat at No. 16 Auburn three days later.

Before the matchup against the Wildcats, head coach Buzz Williams reflected Friday on the losses and how the team can improve.

“I thought we were awful against LSU and I was as mad as I have been probably since I’ve been here. Not that we lost, I didn’t think that we represented us, the department, the institution (and) the former students. It was yucky to me,” Williams explained. “I understand we need to win, I get it, but I’m more concerned with how we go about it. Bill Walsh let the score take care of itself. I thought we were awful.

“I was as disappointed in (Andersson Garcia) as I’ve ever been. It really hurt his feelings. I thought it was for sure better on Tuesday than it was on Saturday. Was it because Wildens (Leveque) started and Andy didn’t? No, it was because of our mentality.”

Williams’ main message for his team going into Saturday’s showdown versus Kentucky was simple: get ready to run.

“What I told our team was, ‘If Auburn is fast, Kentucky is a hallucinogen.’ They looked like you did,” Williams said to the media. “The smart guys were like, ‘It’s like a drug and you hallucinate.’ That’s Kentucky in transition! Super duper fast, 14th fastest team in the country. 64% of their shots have been attempted in the first 12 seconds of the possession. They shoot an enormous amount of shots in transition from 3. It’s similar in regard to the pace but percentage-wise it’s on steroids and even faster. Their perimeter players are even faster going downhill and they’re spraying it and shooting a lot more 3s than Auburn does.”

The Aggies and Wildcats tip off at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday at Reed Arena.
