LOOK: Joe Burrow and Angel Reese strike ‘ring me’ pose together at LSU’s spring game

LSU had some star power on hand to watch its spring game on Saturday.

Angel Reese’s celebration at the end of LSU’s national championship win earlier this month — in which she pointed at her ring finger to signify the jewelry she and her teammates would soon be receiving — has become iconic.

Reese isn’t the only LSU athlete with whom that celebration is associated, though. Former quarterback [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] did the same when the current Cincinnati Bengals standout led the Tigers to a football national title in 2019.

With two of LSU’s biggest stars in attendance for this year’s spring game at Tiger Stadium on Saturday, it was a photo-op that the program’s social media team couldn’t pass up.

While Burrow’s days at LSU are in the past, Reese will be back next year as coach Kim Mulkey’s team looks to defend its title.

How to watch LSU football’s 2023 spring game on Saturday

We’ll get our first look at this year’s squad on Saturday afternoon.

As spring camp has drawn to a close, we’ll get our first real look at the 2023 LSU Tigers squad on Saturday as the team takes the field at Tiger Stadium for the spring game heading into coach Brian Kelly’s second season.

After winning the SEC West last season, LSU brings back a lot of key pieces from last year’s group including quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], leading receiver [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and standout true freshman linebacker [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag].

The Tigers also added quite a bit of talent in the transfer portal, and we’ll get our first look at players like [autotag]Omar Speights[/autotag] and [autotag]Paris Shand[/autotag] on Saturday.

This year’s format will be a full-on offense vs. defense scrimmage that will feature some special teams work, as well, according to a release from LSU.

Here’s what you need to know to follow this game, which begins at 1 p.m. CT with gates opening at noon.

Brian Kelly confirms injured DT Maason Smith won’t play in spring game

The staff is wisely playing it safe when it comes to Smith’s health.

LSU defensive tackle [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] seems to be making good progress toward returning to the field next fall.

Smith tore his ACL on the opening drive of the season in 2022, and he’s been a limited participant in LSU’s spring camp. Fans received a positive update as Smith was spotted going through individual drills earlier this week, though he had braces on both legs.

He seems to be on track to be ready for the start of the season, but for now, the staff isn’t taking any chances when it comes to his health. Speaking to the media on Thursday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] confirmed that Smith won’t play in LSU’s spring game on Saturday.

“It’s just not something that is worth the risk,” Kelly said, per On3’s Matthew Brune. “He’s in a position where he can do a lot of the drill work, but to put him into a spring game, there’s no advantage from that perspective. We’ll give him more time to get his leg stronger to the point where his first contact will be in August. That’s probably the prudent thing.”

This is probably a wise decision given the fact that there’s little tangible benefit to risking potential reinjury for Smith in what is a glorified scrimmage. With [autotag]Jaquelin Roy[/autotag] moving on, LSU is relying on Smith to be an anchor for the defensive line this fall despite coming off an injury.

His health is one of the most important factors on defense this year, so it makes sense to see the coaches playing things safe.

SEC West frontrunners LSU and Alabama highlight Saturday’s spring game slate

The two division favorites will be in action on Saturday.

A number of Power Five programs have already concluded their spring practices with an exhibition game, but there’s another full slate set for this Saturday.

Among the teams that will be showcased is LSU, which returns a lot of talent from a year ago and will look to defend its surprising SEC West title from Brian Kelly’s first season. Also in action Saturday will be the team that is likely the Tigers’ biggest threat to repeat: Alabama.

On3 highlighted the 10 most intriguing spring games on Saturday, and the exhibitions for the West frontrunners are two of the top storylines that Jesse Simonton will be keeping an eye on. Here’s what he said about the Tigers.

When SEC Media Days conclude in late July, it’s a safe bet that either Alabama or LSU will be the pick to win the SEC West in 2023.

The Tigers upset the Crimson Tide last season en route to a surprising division title in Year 1 under Brian Kelly. They return a loaded squad with the makeup of a 2023 College Football Playoff contender.

Jayden Daniels headlines an offense that brings back its entire starting OL, as well as top playmakers like Malik Nabers, Mason Taylor and Brian Thomas Jr.

The spring has largely been about infusing the old with the new, as Kelly hit the portal for 12 transfers during the initial window.

One interesting development to watch with LSU on Saturday: Former freshman phenom Harold Perkins Jr. transitioning to his natural position of inside linebacker.

You can only glean so much from a spring game, which is a glorified scrimmage (or in some cases, a glorified practice session depending on the roster situation).

Still, considering LSU returns key starters at a number of positions, we will likely be able to learn at least some things about this team, as well as the Crimson Tide, who have a lot more questions despite likely being more talented.

Recapping biggest news out of LSU’s spring practice

Here’s everything you might have missed from LSU’s ongoing spring practices.

LSU’s spring practice has been going on for over a month now. It’s set to conclude next week with a final event in Tiger Stadium. It won’t be a traditional spring game, and coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] still hasn’t announced all of the details for what that practice might look like.

Every program views spring practice in a different way. It can be hard to make any conclusions this time of year. Another transfer window awaits, some freshmen have yet to arrive and fall practice will bring its own narratives.

That being said, there’s still a good bit to get caught up on. Here’s all the news you might have missed from LSU’s spring practice so far.

LSU sets 2023 spring practice schedule

LSU’s spring ball gets underway next week.

Football is coming back. Sort of.

We at least now have a date for when LSU will take to the field again for spring practice: March 9.

It’s Brian Kelly’s second spring practice at LSU as he comes off a 10-win season in Year 1.

Spring will be different for the Tigers this year. Instead of breaking in a new program and scheme, LSU will build on last year as it returns both coordinators along with large portions of 2022 on-field production.

That’s good news for a program that’s had its fair share of chaos these last few years.

The quarterbacks won’t have to learn a new playbook, which should allow for better chemistry to be developed with the pass catchers. The secondary should benefit too. We’ve seen communication be an issue on the backend since 2020, but that improved in 2022 and only figures to get better.

Spring practice will conclude in Tiger Stadium on April 22. That’s traditionally been the day for a “spring game,” but we’ve seen coaches across the sport do that final practice in different ways.

LSU’s press release refrains from calling it a spring game and says the details have yet to be determined.

Key dates for LSU’s 2023 spring practice schedule, spring game

The Tigers begin spring ball on March 9.

The 2022 season feels like it just ended, but the Tigers will be back on the field for spring ball before we know it.

We’re less than a month away from spring camp and preparations for the 2023 season kicking off. LSU will begin its practice slate on March 9 with the six-week camp running until April 22, the date of LSU’s spring game.

The Tigers return a lot of talent in 2023, including quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], receiver [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and defensive playmakers like [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] and [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag]. [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] also returns from an ACL injury, though it’s unclear how involved he’ll be this spring.

LSU will likely be a top-10 team entering the season, and we’re not too far away from getting our first look at this year’s group.
