SEC West frontrunners LSU and Alabama highlight Saturday’s spring game slate

The two division favorites will be in action on Saturday.

A number of Power Five programs have already concluded their spring practices with an exhibition game, but there’s another full slate set for this Saturday.

Among the teams that will be showcased is LSU, which returns a lot of talent from a year ago and will look to defend its surprising SEC West title from Brian Kelly’s first season. Also in action Saturday will be the team that is likely the Tigers’ biggest threat to repeat: Alabama.

On3 highlighted the 10 most intriguing spring games on Saturday, and the exhibitions for the West frontrunners are two of the top storylines that Jesse Simonton will be keeping an eye on. Here’s what he said about the Tigers.

When SEC Media Days conclude in late July, it’s a safe bet that either Alabama or LSU will be the pick to win the SEC West in 2023.

The Tigers upset the Crimson Tide last season en route to a surprising division title in Year 1 under Brian Kelly. They return a loaded squad with the makeup of a 2023 College Football Playoff contender.

Jayden Daniels headlines an offense that brings back its entire starting OL, as well as top playmakers like Malik Nabers, Mason Taylor and Brian Thomas Jr.

The spring has largely been about infusing the old with the new, as Kelly hit the portal for 12 transfers during the initial window.

One interesting development to watch with LSU on Saturday: Former freshman phenom Harold Perkins Jr. transitioning to his natural position of inside linebacker.

You can only glean so much from a spring game, which is a glorified scrimmage (or in some cases, a glorified practice session depending on the roster situation).

Still, considering LSU returns key starters at a number of positions, we will likely be able to learn at least some things about this team, as well as the Crimson Tide, who have a lot more questions despite likely being more talented.
