Jayden Daniels named top 101 player from 2022 season

Daniels was one of the best players in college football this season.

PFF recently released its top players of the 2022 season (subscription required). The lone Tiger to make the cut was quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], coming in at No. 95.

PFF called Daniels one of the top dual-threat QBs in the country, citing him as the main reason for LSU’s quick turnaround.

“While throwing for 2.913 yards, Daniels added another 885 yards on the ground. He was responsible for 28 of the team’s touchdowns and threw just three interceptions.”

Despite the 10-win season, it’s not a surprise to see just one LSU player making the cut. The Tigers’ star power in 2022 came from names that were still emerging — [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag], [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] and [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag].

According to PFF, Daniels finished as the fifth-best graded QB in the SEC. Daniels will return to LSU in 2023 for his final year of eligibility. [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] saw some extra snaps in the bowl game but [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] confirmed Daniels is still QB No. 1.

LSU coaching staff makes a strong early impression on talented 2026 quarterback

Julian Lewis picked up an offer after his LSU visit this weekend.

Quarterback recruiting can be a roller coaster, and in the NIL/transfer portal era, that’s only amplified.

You can’t put too much stock in what players will do years away from their signings, but with that being said, LSU is one of several programs making a strong impression on 2026 signal-caller [autotag]Julian Lewis[/autotag]. The current high school freshman from Carrollton (Ga.) isn’t rated by the major services, but he’s picked up several high-profile offers, including from USC, Ohio State and, most recently, LSU.

Lewis is a long way from making a decision, but he told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong that “everything” about LSU stood out after a weekend visit that netted him an offer.

“They are focused on the total player as a person. The coaches are really setting you up to be the best version of yourself.”

It’s easy to see why Lewis’ stock has taken off so quickly. In his first season at Carrollton, he completed 66% of his passes for 4,118 yards and 48 touchdowns. His recruiting process will almost certainly feature some twists and turns, but it seems the Tigers have put themselves in a good early spot.

Breaking down the future of LSU’s quarterback room after Walker Howard’s departure

Here’s where the LSU QB room stands without Howard.

[autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] was billed as the future of LSU. Even before the coaching change, before the arrival of [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] or [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], Howard was the guy.

That story has taken a turn. On Wednesday, Howard entered the transfer portal.

An LSU quarterback entering the portal isn’t a surprise. Fans have speculated for months despite Kelly stating he thought the room would remain intact through the spring.

Howard was not expected to compete for the starting job in 2023. With Daniels and [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] sticking around, Howard was at least a year away.

From that standpoint, the move makes sense. But if Howard remained a Tiger, it’s not hard to see a scenario where he cruised to the starting job in 2024 or 2025 if Nussmeier left early, whether through the portal or the draft.

LSU’s still in a good spot with Daniels and Nussmeier. Here’s where LSU’s QB room stands now and where it could go moving forward.

BREAKING: True freshman Tigers quarterback Walker Howard enters transfer portal

The promising young passer is moving on after one season with the Tigers.

LSU’s quarterback room took a big hit in the long term on Wednesday as true freshman quarterback [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound passer from St. Thomas More Catholic High School in Lafayette was rated as a four-star recruit and top-50 player nationally coming out of high school by both 247Sports and On3. He spent his true freshman season third on the depth chart behind [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag], taking a redshirt.

He appeared in two games in 2022, attempting four passes — all of which came in the Citrus Bowl win over Purdue. He completed two of them for seven yards, and he totaled 33 rushing yards on six attempts on the year.

Howard committed to LSU in June 2020 and held firm through the coaching change last fall despite a late push from Florida. Despite not playing much in his first year on campus, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said after the bowl game that he expected all three scholarship quarterbacks to be with the team for the spring, including Howard.

Daniels and Nussmeier appear poised to duke it out for the starting job once more, though Kelly has reiterated that Daniels is the team’s starter. [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag], a four-star quarterback from Baton Rouge who signed with the Tigers in December, will likely take Howard’s spot on the depth chart. However, he won’t enroll until the summer and will not be with the team during spring practice.

LSU sticking with Jayden Daniels after up-and-down debut

Brian Kelly said a quarterback change was never considered on Sunday night.

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels is probably catching too much flack following his debut in the purple and gold.

The Arizona State transfer made a lot of plays with his legs in Sunday night’s loss to Florida State, and he found his footing a bit in the passing game during the second-half comeback. Poor offensive line play didn’t help him get into a rhythm as he was sacked four times.

The passing attack felt limited at times, but fans hoping to see [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] will likely be disappointed. Based on Kelly’s comments at his press conference on Tuesday, it’s clear the coaches plan to stick with Daniels.

“It was never a conversation,” Kelly said on making a quarterback change. “There was never a time during the game where Mike and I — Mike Denbrock, that is, or Joe Sloan — had a conversation about, ‘Hey, let’s make a change here. Let’s see if that’s the best option for us.’ That was never a conversation. And right now, it’s — Jayden’s our No. 1 quarterback.”

It makes sense that the Tigers don’t want to consider a change already. Daniels was brought in by Kelly to start, and a change would be premature. Still, his leash moving forward may not be quite as long as we thought it might be.

LSU’s quarterbacks deemed a loser from Day 1 of SEC Media Days by Tennessean

Brian Kelly remained uncommitted about the starting quarterback.

LSU’s [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] got things started at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Monday, becoming the first coach to take to the podium in what was his first time participating in a media days event since he was at Cincinnati in 2009.

Kelly discussed a wide variety of topics and gave us some insight into his thought processes heading into fall camp, but it wasn’t the most illuminating press conference. One question Kelly didn’t provide much of an answer for is likely the one LSU fans are most interested in: Who will be this team’s starting quarterback?

The first-year Tigers coach offered praise for all four of the players competing — [autotag]Myles Brennan[/autotag], [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] and [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] — and praised the depth, though he said the spring was more about installing the offense than determining a starter.

Because of his non-committal answer, the quarterback group was labeled a “loser” from Day 1 by the Nashville Tennessean’s Derrian Carter.

Brian Kelly remained uncommitted about naming LSU’s starter.

“We’re really going to have to set the offensive structure and its installation to the skill set of the particular players,” Kelly said. “No. 1, they’ve got to take care of the football. No. 2, they have to get the ball to playmakers. … No. 3, they’ve got to make plays.

“The ultimate decision-making on who that quarterback is, he’ll have to hit those three notes.”

While it could be potentially concerning that none of the quarterbacks managed to separate during the spring, each has their strengths, and it’s hard to believe LSU won’t be able to find success with one of them lining up under center.

It was highly unlikely Kelly was going to announce the starter on Monday, and the competition will almost certainly carry into fall camp and potentially even into the season. It’s important to identify your guy and move forward with him, but the Tigers still have time to figure that out before it becomes a cause for worry.
