NEW: SEC fines LSU $100k for court-storming after Kentucky win

The Tigers were fined $100,000 as a first-time violator of the new court-storming policy that was adopted in 2023.

The Pete Maravich Assembly Center erupted into a frenzy on Wednesday night.

The LSU men’s basketball team upset the ranked Kentucky Wildcats on a buzzer-beating game-winner from [autotag]Tyrell Ward[/autotag], and fans immediately stormed the court as pandemonium ensued. Women’s basketball star [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], who was in attendance, was even knocked down while storming the court.

While it was a special moment at LSU, it won’t come without a price. The SEC has levied a $100,000 fine against the university for violating its policy against court-storming.

Per the rules established last year, teams are fined $100,000 for the first offense, $250,000 for a second offense and $500,000 for any subsequent offenses.

This is the SEC policy, according to a release from the league.

The policy states that “institutions shall limit access to competition areas to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly credentialed or authorized individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest may spectators enter the competition area.”

While LSU is likely happy to eat that fine, it will be something to monitor if there are any court-storming events at the university in the future.

Matt McMahon breaks down LSU’s last possession in upset win over Kentucky

Trusting in his players proved to be the right call as the Tigers moved to 14-12 and 6-7 overall in conference play.

Last night, the LSU Tigers took down the Kentucky Wildcats in the Pete Maravich Center. Head coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] has taken a team that did not win any conference games last season to a team that has defeated back-to-back ranked opponents.

The Tigers won 75-74 over Kentucky due to a last-second shot that barely beat the buzzer. Kentucky took the lead with less than 10 seconds left and the Tigers had one timeout remaining, so that brought on a big decision for McMahon. Would he trust his team to play it out or would he call a timeout to draw up a play?

“Wish I would’ve called timeout,” McMahon said jokingly, per On3. “But I didn’t want them to get their defense set. I like them playing in transition, just a scramble situation. Trust [autotag]Jordan Wright[/autotag] with the ball there.

“We’ve been searching for some toughness. And [autotag]Tyrell Ward[/autotag] comes flying out of nowhere to put that ball in and win the game, just awesome, man. Awesome.”

Trusting in his players proved to be the right call as the Tigers moved to 14-12 and 6-7 overall in conference play.

Angel Reese says she was knocked down while storming the court after LSU’s win over Kentucky

One of the many people who were in attendance on Wednesday night was LSU women’s hoops star Angel Reese.

On Wednesday night, the LSU men’s basketball team pulled off a feat that many people deemed impossible. [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] and his team pulled off a last-second shot to beat the Kentucky Wildcats 75-74 at the PMAC.

One of the many people who were in attendance was LSU women’s hoops star [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag]. When the clock hit triple zeroes and it was announced that the final shot from LSU counted, Tigers fans stormed the court to celebrate the huge win.

The one drawback to that is you run the risk of being run over or getting into an altercation. Reese ended up getting knocked down as the Tigers celebrated their huge victory. Thankfully, she did not suffer any injuries during the ordeal.

What a job McMahon has done this season turning this team around. Last season, his team failed to win any conference games. Now, he has back-to-back wins over ranked conference opponents.

PHOTOS: LSU men’s basketball upsets Kentucky on buzzer-beater for 2nd straight ranked win

The Tigers held on for a statement home win against the Wildcats on Wednesday night.

The LSU men’s basketball team is putting something together down the stretch this season.

The Tigers recorded their second straight victory over a ranked opponent with a stunning upset against Kentucky at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Trailing by one in the final seconds, a potential game-winner from [autotag]Jordan Wright[/autotag] was blocked. But he secured his own rebound, lobbed the ball up to [autotag]Tyrell Ward [/autotag]in desperation, and Ward responded with a put-back buzzer-beater to lift LSU to a 75-74 win.

The Tigers move to 14-12 on the season and are now just one game below .500 in SEC play. They’ll look to get back to even as Mississippi State comes to town on Saturday.

In the meantime, here are the photos from Wednesday night’s win.

Instant Analysis: Tyrell Ward’s buzzer-beater stuns Kentucky as LSU men’s basketball earns another ranked win

The Tigers have now revitalized their season with back-to-back wins over top-20 opponents.

When Jordan Wright’s layup with just two seconds to go was blocked, it looked like LSU men’s basketball was doomed to suffer another heartbreaking loss by one point to Kentucky.

But then, Wright secured the rebound and lobbed it up to [autotag]Tyrell Ward[/autotag], who caught the ball in the air and put back a game-winning, buzzer-beater shot to give the Tigers a 75-74 win, marking back-to-back victories for coach Matt McMahon’s team over top-20 opponents.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, but the Wildcats ultimately stretched a nine-point lead at the break. However, LSU flipped the script in the second half in a game that featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes.

An 11-0 run for LSU early in the second half cut the lead to two points, and the teams would trade the lead for much of the rest of that half.

Kentucky thought it delivered the dagger in the final seconds as a Rob Dillingham jumper gave it the lead with 13 seconds to play. But LSU would ultimately respond on the final possession.

Ward ultimately led the team with 17 points, while Wright and [autotag]Jalen Reed[/autotag] also scored in double figures with 13 points each in the win.

The Tigers move to 14-12 (6-7 SEC) and have revitalized their season with a pair of clutch Quadrant 1 wins. They’ll look to keep that streak going when they return to the court at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for another tough game against Mississippi State on Saturday.

PHOTOS: LSU men’s basketball comes back to upset No. 11 South Carolina in Columbia

The Tigers rallied from down 16 to upset South Carolina in Columbia on Saturday.

Like in the midweek game against Florida, LSU’s men’s basketball team overcame a major second-half deficit on Saturday against No. 11 South Carolina.

Unlike in that game, however, the Tigers came away with the win this time around.

Trailing by 16 in the second half, coach Matt McMahon’s team erased that lead and forced a key turnover in the final seconds. [autotag]Jordan Wright[/autotag], who had 14 points in the game, was clutch down the stretch.

He made a pair of free throws down one that ultimately set the decisive score at 66-63. LSU moves to 13-12 (5-7 SEC) and will welcome Kentucky to town on Wednesday night for what will be its fifth straight Quadrant 1 game.

For now, here are the photos from the come-from-behind win.

Instant Analysis: LSU men’s basketball overcomes 16-point deficit, stuns No. 11 South Carolina on the road

The Tigers staged another big comeback on the road, but this time, they came away with the win.

It looked like LSU was heading for another bad road loss on Saturday, but coach Matt McMahon’s team had other plans.

The Tigers overcame a 16-point second-half deficit and, particularly thanks to some clutch play from [autotag]Jordan Wrigh[/autotag]t down the stretch, they shocked No. 11 South Carolina on the road in Columbia with a 64-63 win.

McMahon gets a signature win, and LSU moves to 13-12 and 5-7 in SEC play as it earned its first road win against an AP Top 25 team since Feb. 2019.

LSU had a poor first half offensively, shooting just 10 of 30. Fortunately, the Gamecocks weren’t much better and also shot under 40%. They took 12 threes and hit just two of them.

The Tigers took an early 13-8 lead, but South Carolina responded with a 17-1 run and ultimately led by as much as 12 in the first half. But LSU managed to cut that down to seven as it trailed 32-25 at the break.

The Gamecocks came out of the gates hot in the second half, beginning the period on a 9-0 run to take a game-high 16-point lead. The Tigers, however, would claw their way back.

With just under eight minutes to play, LSU went on a 13-4 run and, with a Tyrell Ward three-pointer, cut the lead to just one with 3:01 to play.

Still, South Carolina managed to retake the lead, and while Wright cut it to one with a layup, the Tigers found themselves in trouble as they had multiple fouls to give.

But good trap defense by LSU forced a turnover on the inbound, and Wright drew a foul on the subsequent possession. He sunk both free throws to give the Tigers the lead, and as the final second ticked off, a prayer of a three from South Carolina missed.

Wright finished with 14 points, while Ward had a team-high 16 points thanks to a trio of threes. LSU as a team shot above 50% in the second half, and it won the rebounding battle 38-33.

It’s a massive win for LSU, which will hope it can spark a late-season run, even though the NCAA Tournament is likely out of reach.

The Tigers will now return home on Wednesday night, but the road doesn’t get any easier as Kentucky comes to town in what will be LSU’s fifth-straight game against a Quadrant 1 opponent.

PHOTOS: LSU men’s basketball’s comeback bid at Florida falls short

The Tigers couldn’t quite complete the comeback as a chance for a statement road win went by the wayside.

LSU overcame a 20-point deficit against a red-hot SEC opponent on the road on Saturday night, but it wasn’t enough to win.

The Tigers men’s basketball team trailed Florida 60-40 in the second half but tied the game with less than a minute to play. Trailing by one as the final seconds ticked off, a potential open game-tying shot from [autotag]Jordan Wright[/autotag] fell short as the Gators survived to win 82-80.

The loss dropped the Tigers to .500 as they’re 12-12 on the season, and they’re just 4-7 in SEC play after losing their last three and six of their last seven.

LSU will now prepare for another tough road game against ranked South Carolina on Saturday. In the meantime, here are the photos from Tuesday’s hard-fought loss.

Instant Analysis: LSU men’s basketball drops heartbreaker against Florida

LSU erased a 20-point second-half deficit, but it wasn’t enough to get a statement road win.

LSU’s men’s basketball team very nearly completed a remarkable comeback in Gainesville against Florida on Tuesday night.

After trailing by 20 points in the second half, the Tigers fought back to tie the game in the final minute. Trailing by two as the final seconds ticked away, guard [autotag]Jordan Wright[/autotag] had a wide-open lane to the basket but rushed his shot, leaving it short as the Gators held on for an 82-80 win.

LSU had a nice start to the game offensively, but the Gators were even better. They sunk their first six shots and hit eight of their first 11, holding on to a slim 19-15 lead by the under-12 timeout in the first half.

Florida ultimately finished the half shooting 66.7%, stretching a 14-point lead heading into the locker room thanks to a buzzer-beater long two from guard Zyon Pullin.

LSU particularly struggled to defend Walter Clayton Jr., who had 14 points in the half. Will Baker led the Tigers with 13 points in the frame, but the team shot just 41.9%, though 5-of-12 three-point shooting helped them hang around.

Florida dominated early in the second half, leading 60-40 at one point. But the Gators went cold, and some clutch shooting from the Tigers got them back in the game, particularly [autotag]Jalen Cook[/autotag] — who scored 12 for the night and 10 points in the second half.

The Tigers ultimately outshot Florida 51%-49%, but they left points at the charity stripe as they were just 13 of 21 on free throws. Wright and [autotag]Will Baker[/autotag] ultimately led the team with 16 points each.

LSU missed opportunities to steal this one; a turnover down one with 25 seconds to go stands out. It also was dominated on the boards with a 43-29 rebounding margin

Now, the Tigers fall to 12-12 (4-7 SEC) after dropping their last three and six of their last seven. They’ll be back in action on Saturday with another tough road game against a ranked South Carolina team.
