Another double-digit Sweet 16 team moves on.

Our NCAA Tournament simulation continues with the West Region and there will be another double-digit team that makes the Sweet 16 in either No. 10 Texas Tech who takes on No. 15 Eastern Washington. The rest of the region had higher seeds advance.

Also, as a reminder, these games are simulated just one time over at What If Sports to determine the winner.

West

Final score: 87 No. 8 LSU, No. 1 Gonzaga 72

The first top seed goes down as LSU came from behind to easily defeat Gonzaga by 15 points. The Bulldogs had a first half lead but the scoring just was not there in the second half as they were outscored by 22. The Tigers had six players in double figures to make it to the Sweet 16.

Final score: No. 4 Oregon 83, No. 5 Butler 55

The Pac-12 continues to do well in this tournament as the Oregon Ducks routed Butler by 28 points. The Bulldogs had just one player in double figures with Kamar Baldwin who put up 17 points, and as a team, Butler shot just 39 percent from the field. The Ducks had an all-out offensive blitz, particularly in the second half, and they made 50 percent from beyond the arc. Payton Pritchard led the way with 5 of 8 from three-point range and 23 points in the win.

Final score: No. 3 Seton Hall 93, No. 6 Penn State 81

The offense was on in this game and the Pirates got the victory by converting from beyond the arc by making 12 of 21 and it also helped that they had the scoring spread apart with four in double figures. Penn State did all it could to keep up but their own outside shooting was not helpful.

Final score: No. 10 Texas Tech 87, No. 15 Eastern Washington 76

Eastern Washington is not following what Florida Gulf Coast did a few years ago by being a 15 seed and making the Sweet 16. Texas Tech got the win in a hard fought game. The first half had this a one point game in favor of the Eagles, but the difference began when the Red Raiders went on a 9-2 run to pull away just enough to get the win and advance to the Sweet 16.

Utah State is making their maiden voyage away from the familiarity of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.  The Aggies are five games into their season and Craig Smith’s squad has yet to play an away game.

The game will feature a pair of conference leading teams.  Louisiana State University, leading the SEC, and Utah State University, leading the MWC.  Each team made the trek all the way to Jamaica and will face off in the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic.  Jamaica is no Logan, but I guess it’s a close second…   LSU, who was ranked in the top 25 earlier this season, will look to reclaim a spot among the best teams in the nation.  Meanwhile, Utah State looks to stay unbeaten and hopefully climb into the top ten.

LSU’s only loss this season was a two-point mishap against VCU.  They are a very talented and athletic squad.  Senior guard Skylar Mays leads the Tigers in scoring with 17 points a game.  Coincidentally his highest scoring output this season (23) came is the loss against VCU.  Not only does Mays score the ball, but he also snags nearly 7 rebounds per game.  Another Tiger to watch for is sophomore forward Darius Days.  Days is averaging nearly 13 points and 8 rebounds a game.

The Aggies have scored over 80 points in each of their 5 games this season.  It will be interesting to see if the can continue their dominant offense against an opponent such as LSU.  Sam Merrill has been the leading scorer for Utah State this season averaging nearly 18 points a game.

Merrill will need his teammates to continue playing at a high level as well.  Utah State features 5 players averaging ten or more points. Merrill (18), Bean (13), Miller (13), Anderson (12), and Brito (11).  This well balanced attack will be needed in order to outlast LSU.

Utah State sophomore center Neemias Queta made the trip to Jamaica with the rest of the Aggie team.  No word has been given whether or not he will receive any playing time over the course of the tournament.  Big man, Kuba Karwowski, has been filling in for the injured Queta.  He has done a solid job thus far averaging 3 points, 5 rebound, and 2 blocks a game.  Queta’s return could spell trouble for the Tigers.  LSU doesn’t have any players over 6’9”.  If Queta returns the Aggies would have three 7 footers at their disposal.

Overall, be on the lookout for a high paced, high scoring game.  If USU can control the pace, tempo, and style of game they should be able to emerge victorious.

Last week, Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Virginia) shooting guard Cam Thomas told USA TODAY Sports that it was “possible” that he could make his decision during the NCAA’s Early Signing Period, which runs from Nov. 13-20.

On Monday, the ALL-USA Preseason selection upgraded the possible to actual, picking LSU over UCLA.

Thomas is arguably the top scorer in the country, averaging 35 points a game on the No. 14 team in USA Today’s Super 25. This past summer he led the Nike EYBL in scoring, averaging 30 points a game.

“Scoring isn’t hard for me,” Thomas told USA Today Sports. “I feel like I was born to do it. I just look at it as me doing my job for my team to win. I don’t see it as anything special.”

Thomas is ranked No. 11 overall in USA Today Sports’ Chosen 25.
