Jayden Daniels named Sporting News Player of the Year

Jayden Daniels added to his long list of postseason awards on Thursday.

After winning the 2023 Heisman Trophy, LSU quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] has added another national player of the year accolade to his resume.

On Thursday, Daniels was named the Sporting News Player of the Year. He was also named the national player of the year by the AFCA, FWAA, AP and Walter Camp Football Foundation in addition to receiving four different First Team All-America honors.

He also won the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the top quarterback in college football.

Daniels had a special 2023 season, leading the nation in total yards and touchdowns while setting an FBS record for passing efficiency at 208.

It remains to be seen if we will see Daniels take the field one more time in an LSU uniform. He has not yet made a decision on whether he will opt out of the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin, which will take place in Tampa on New Year’s Day.

Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers named to yet another All-American team

Sporting News became the latest publication to honor Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers as First Team All-Americans.

The postseason honors continue to rack up for [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag].

Arguably the best quarterback-receiver duo in the nation, the pair are both expected to be first-round picks in the 2024 NFL draft, with some mocks even predicting that both will go in the top 10.

They’ve been named First Team All-Americans by practically every publication in the nation, and Sporting News joined the list, honoring both as First Teamers.

Daniels won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 while leading the nation in total yards and touchdowns as well as passing efficiency. Nabers was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and led the nation in receiving yards with 1,546.

It remains unclear if we’ve seen the last of this duo at the college level. Nabers has already announced his intention to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin, but we’re still awaiting a decision from Daniels.

LSU QB coach Joe Sloan named to 247Sports All-Assistant Team

Jayden Daniels took a massive leap in his second season under Joe Sloan’s tutelage.

This fall, LSU turned in an offensive season so prolific that it rivaled the 2019 unit led by [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag]. For that, offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Denbrock[/autotag] was named a finalist for the Broyles Award.

But he’s not the only offensive assistant for the Tigers that’s drawing some postseason recognition. After his work with [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] — who transferred in from Arizona State and won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 — the last two seasons, quarterbacks coach [autotag]Joe Sloan[/autotag] was named to the 247Sports All-Assistant Team.

Sloan has deep ties to the state having spent the nine seasons on staff at Louisiana Tech in various roles before joining LSU, most recently as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Here’s what 247Sports said about Sloan.

You know you’re having a good year when your quarterback wins the Heisman Trophy. Sloan took a great quarterback and developed Jayden Daniels into an elite player over the last two seasons.

The results this fall were jaw-dropping. The second-year transfer from Arizona State transfer threw 40 touchdowns against only four interceptions, and he rushed for 1,134 yards, the best mark by a quarterback. His efforts combined for 4,946 yards and 50 touchdowns — and he led the nation with an FBS-record 11.7 yards per pass attempt.

LSU had the nation’s fourth-best passing offense at 334.3 yards per game and no team averaged more yards through the air than the Tigers (11 yards per attempt) thanks to the efforts of Daniels.

After a solid first season in Baton Rouge, Daniels took a massive leap in Year 2 under Sloan’s tutelage. With Daniels heading to the NFL, potentially as a top-10 draft pick, Sloan’s stock is likely only to rise.

The Tigers don’t necessarily have a clear starter in 2024. [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] is the most game-tested passer on the roster, but he’s yet to start a game. [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] only saw minimal action this fall in a redshirt year as a true freshman, and incoming quarterback [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag] likely won’t be ready to start in the SEC after reclassifying from the 2025 class.

LSU is likely to add a transfer quarterback and is currently pursuing several targets. Regardless of how the depth chart ultimately breaks down, it’s hard not to trust the coach leading the quarterback room at the moment if you’re an LSU fan.

Malik Nabers named a Walter Camp First Team All-American

While Malik Nabers didn’t win the Biletnikoff, he didn’t come away completely empty-handed on Friday night.

Though he didn’t receive the Biletnikoff Award, which was instead given to Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] didn’t come home from the College Football Award Show completely empty-handed.

He was named a First Team All-Ameican by the Walter Camp Foundation during the show on Friday night. Nabers becomes the fifth LSU receiver to receive First Team honors from Walter Camp and the first since [autotag]Ja’Marr Chase[/autotag] in 2019.

Nabers is LSU’s all-time leader in receptions, and he led the nation in receiving in 2023 while playing a major role in one of the nation’s most prolific offenses for the Tigers.

Quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] was snubbed on the First Team in favor of Michael Penix Jr., but he was named to the Second Team. The All-Americans will be honored in New Haven, Connecticut, from March 15-16.

Michael Penix edges out Jayden Daniels for Maxwell Award

The winner of the Maxwell Award has also won the Heisman in every season since 2018.

It was an overall successful award night for LSU quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], who received the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback as well as the Walter Camp National Player of the Year Award.

However, he came up short for the most prestigious honor of the night as the Maxwell Award, given to the best overall player in college football, was given to Washington quarterback Michael Penix over Daniels and Oregon’s Bo Nix.

All three are Heisman finalists, and that seems notable considering the Maxwell has historically been a good predictor of the Heisman winner. They’ve been aligned every year since 2018, when Tua Tagovailoa won the Maxwell but Kyler Murray won the Heisman.

LSU fans and Daniels will hope this year becomes another exception as the Heisman winner will be announced on Saturday night.

Jayden Daniels wins Walter Camp National Player of the Year Award

Jayden Daniels was also named the Davey O’Brien Award winner on Friday night.

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] continued to add to his list of hardware on Friday night, receiving the 2023 Walter Camp National Player of the Year Award.

Daniels also won the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback in the country, and he’s a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, which is given to the best player in college football. He was also a finalist for the Maxwell Award, but that was ultimately given to Washington’s Michael Penix.

Jayden Daniels leads the nation in total yards per game and touchdowns, as well as quarterback rating. He’s the betting favorite to win the Heisman, and he’s now viewed by some as a possible top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Follow along as we wait to see if Daniels wins the ultimate prize on Saturday night.

Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. wins Biletnikoff Award over Malik Nabers

Despite finishing more than 300 yards ahead of Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers did not receive the Biletnikoff Award.

LSU already saw one player win a postseason award on Friday night as [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] was named the Davey O’Brien winner, and it could have had another as receiver [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award.

Instead, the award ultimately went to Ohio State wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., who is viewed as the top receiver prospect in the 2024 NFL draft.

While Harrison is viewed as the better prospect on Sundays, his production left the award open to debate. While Nabers paced the nation with 1,546 receiving yards, Harrison finished behind him by a margin of more than 300 yards.

Nabers didn’t finish with as many touchdowns as Harrison, who had 14 compared to Nabers’ 12, but he also split some of the glory with Brian Thomas Jr., whose 15 receiving touchdowns led the nation in 2023.

It’s a disappointment for Nabers, but he is still considered a possible top 10 pick in this spring’s draft and will suit up for the Tigers one last time as he’s already announced his intention to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin on Jan. 1.

LSU QB Jayden Daniels wins Davey O’Brien Award

Jayden Daniels was named the best quarterback in college football in 2023.

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] kicked off what should be an eventful award night for him by being named the recipient of the 2023 Davey O’Brien Award, given annually to the nation’s top quarterback.

Daniels received the award over Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix, who also joined him as Heisman Trophy finalists. The winner of the Heisman will be announced during its own ceremony on Saturday night in New York City.

It’s been a prolific final season at LSU for Daniels, who paces the nation in almost every quarterback stat. He’s the heavy betting favorite to win the Heisman, and he’s seen his draft stock rise and could now find himself as a top 10 pick next spring.

Stay tuned to LSU Wire for all the coverage of Friday night’s College Football Award Show, which should feature several awards for Daniels and potentially the Biletnikoff for [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag].

SEC coaches tab Jayden Daniels as league’s Offensive Player of the Year

The awards continue to pile up for Jayden Daniels.

Jayden Daniels is likely going to hear his name announced as the next to join the fraternity of Heisman Trophy winners on Saturday, but in the meantime, he’s still picking up some hardware.

Daniels was tabbed on Wednesday by league coaches as the SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

Daniels has already been named the national and SEC Offensive Player of the Year by the AP in addition to winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and being named a unanimous First Team All-SEC selection.

He becomes the second LSU player after Joe Burrow to be named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year after the award split into recognition for both sides of the ball in 2003. Prior to that, LSU had five SEC Player of the Year winners including [autotag]Billy Cannon[/autotag], who won it twice in 1959 and 1960.

Daniels’ special season has put him in rare territory for an LSU quarterback, and a Heisman win would just be the cherry on top.

LSU’s Jayden Daniels named AP Player of the Year

Jayden Daniels becomes the second Tiger to be named the AP’s national Player of the Year.

The list of accolades keeps stacking up for LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.

On Thursday, the Tigers’ quarterback was named the national Player of the Year by the Associated Press. He becomes the second LSU player to win the award, joining Joe Burrow in 2019.

Burrow also won the Heisman that season, and Daniels is the heavy favorite to do so as well this season. The AP Player of the Year award tends to be a strong indicator of the Heisman winner, having differed only twice from the Heisman vote in the past two decades.

Daniels received 31 of 55 first-place votes, finishing ahead of Michael Penix, Bo Nix, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Ollie Gordon II.

Daniels paces the nation in total offense and total touchdowns this season, tying for first in passing touchdowns and ranking third in passing yards. His 208 quarterback rating would be an FBS record.
