Alabama CB Eli Ricks not starting against Utah State

Eli RIcks coming off the bench against Utah State

Former LSU cornerback, [autotag]Eli Ricks[/autotag], was maybe the biggest grab out of the transfer portal for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide this offseason. However, it might take a few more weeks for Ricks to see starting time as he will be second string today against Utah State.

Saban elected to go with McKinstry and Arnold to start, but Ricks will get a chance to showcase his abilities throughout the night. Tyler Harrell, another huge portal addition, will also be out this evening against the Aggies.

Why LSU Will Win

It’s been a rough run over the last few games – starting with a loss to Alabama – but the team is still shooting okay and the threes keep coming. They’re not always falling in, but this team isn’t afraid of bombing away.

More importantly, the defense is great at generating steals, it’s able to go on scoring spurts, and it (usually) has the ability to keep up the pace. When everything is working with a high-intensity defense leading to the offense that can do a little bit of everything – including hitting everything on the free-throw line – but …

Why Alabama Will Win

The Tigers are having a problem keeping up lately – and it’s from the defensive side.

Yeah, they can score, but they couldn’t keep the Alabama offense in check in the 105-75 loss at home a few weeks ago. They did the impossible and got rocked by Kentucky, and as this is happening, the defense is struggling.

The offense hasn’t been totally miserable, but the LSU D hasn’t been able to clamp down. That’s where Alabama is more than happy take advantage with an offense that’s great at shooting from the outside and it’s hitting the boards hard.

What’s Going To Happen

Throw out the loss to Oklahoma on the road last Saturday – Alabama is playing tremendously well. The offense is able to up the tempo and it should be able to score without too many problems against the struggling LSU D.

The Tigers will be feisty, and they’ll do a nice job of forcing a few mistakes, but they won’t be able to deal with the pace.

Joe Burrow responds to question about LSU, Alabama national championship teams

The former LSU passer and Heisman Trophy winner responded to the question in perfect Joe Burrow fashion, exactly the way we expected him to.

It’s been a popular topic throughout social media since the national championship game Monday night — is 2019 LSU or 2020 Alabama the better football team?

There’s been a lot of debate, with people from both sides taking a good look into the quarterback and wide receiver aspect of it all.

Speaking of the former, current Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was asked in a recent press conference as to which team he thought was better.

The former LSU passer and Heisman Trophy winner responded to the question in perfect Joe Burrow fashion, exactly the way we expected him to.

“I think everyone knows the answer to that question,” he said. “Everyone knows what I’m gonna say, I don’t even have to say it.”

Take that as you will.

It’s hard to forget about the video-game offense LSU featured that season, as well as what Burrow mentally alone brought to the table as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game at this level.

Burrow was putting together a first NFL season with Rookie of the Year potential with the Bengals, but it was all cut short when Burrow suffered ACL and MCL tears against the Washington Football Team in November.

Burrow is “on pace” to return to the field in Week 1, and it will be interesting to see what the Bengals look like with him back in the saddle in 2021.

HALFTIME: Alabama leads LSU, 45-14

The Crimson Tide couldn’t have made it look much easier through the first two quarters of action against LSU.

The Alabama Crimson Tide came into this one favored by four touchdowns, and it took them little time to show just why that was in the first half of Saturday night’s game against LSU.

Largely off the efforts of Najee Harris and DeVonta Smith, Alabama had already made its way to midfield in roughly a minute-and-a-half, and a 24-yard reception by wide receiver John Metchie from quarterback Mac Jones followed by a pair of rushes from Najee Harris saw Alabama find the end zone in just over three minutes of action.

The LSU offensive line looked improved on the first drive, protecting true freshman quarterback TJ Finley well enough for the Tigers to move deep into Alabama territory, but there was a turnover on downs after LSU went for it on fourth down with one yard to go.

Alabama didn’t look back.

As the Tigers failed to get to the scoreboard, Alabama tacked on two more touchdowns between a a 14-yard scoring rush from Najee Harris and a one-yarder, also from Harris, on a play that was originally called an LSU fumble recovery.

LSU got to the scoreboard for the first time of the night in a rather unconventional manner, with 44-yard reception by Kayshon Boutte that should have been his touchdown, but instead became Jontre Kirklin’s after Boutte dropped the ball outside of the end zone.

It didn’t take long, though, for Jones to throw it on a dime to Smith for a 65-yard touchdown to make it 28-7.

The Tigers recorded their second touchdown of the evening with a 54-yard rush that injected a new sense of life into a team that was beginning to fall behind in an ugly way.

That didn’t last long, though, as Jones found Smith for a 61-yard touchdown that made it 35-14, Alabama early on in the second quarter.

Alabama threatened to score again with over three minutes left in the half, but the LSU defense managed to hold its opponent to a 30-yard field goal.

The LSU offense was unable to get anything going for the remainder of the half, as Alabama marched down the field yet again and Smith made a one-handed grab to boost Alabama to a 45-14 lead the Crimson Tide walked into the locker room with, along with a ridiculous 469 yards of total offense.

Here’s a look at some of the most notable highlights midway through the contest:

Alabama football throws shade at LSU during open date

Alabama football had something to say during the open date after the postponement of the LSU game.

This year’s go-round between Alabama football and LSU was not set to go the way it did last year, and now it’s not occurring at all this weekend because of COVID-19 concerns.

But that doesn’t mean the talk surrounding one of the most heated rivalries in all of college football has died down.

The Crimson Tide had something to say, throwing a little bit of shade at LSU on the team Twitter account recently.

And this tweet seems to be more directed toward the Tigers than anything surrounding Call of Duty, folks.

“We know BAMA FANS are itching for competition this weekend… since our opponent couldn’t come through, glad @callofduty did #BlackOpsColdWar is OUT and we’ve got FREE copies!!!,” it read.

Yikes.

It will be interesting to see how things play out when and if the two teams do eventually meet this year, but with the current state of the program, it’s safe to assume that LSU does not want Bama.
