Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Louisville bad snap gives the Fighting Irish the ball

Notre Dame got a break with a bad snap on a Louisville punt.

Securing the football has been difficult for both teams as No. 16 Notre Dame hosts No. 15 Louisville in South Bend today.

The Louisville Cardinals were set to punt from their own 49 but the snap was too high. Notre Dame special teamer Jordan Faison pushed the ball further upfield and Fighting Irish linebacker Kennedy Urlacher — son of NFL star Brian — recovered, setting the Irish up with first and goal at the Louisville 4-yard line.

The play continued a huge swing of momentum in Notre Dame’s favor.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Riley Leonard airs it out

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard hits a big touchdown pass against Louisville.

Shortly after the Notre Dame Fighting Irish recovered a huge fumble against the Louisville Cardinals, Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard found a wide-open Jaden Greathouse for a 34-yard touchdown pass.

This capped a 4-play, 53-yard touchdown drive that also featured a 16-yard run from Irish running back Jadarian Price. The drive took 2:05 off the clock.

The score gave the Fighting Irish a 14-7 lead with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter.

Notre Dame needed a fast start after struggling early in every game except the blowout over Purdue, and so far the Irish have achieved that.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Leonard Moore forced fumble averts disaster

Notre Dame fumble recovery swings momentum against Lousville.

Shortly after Notre Dame tied the game at 7, the Louisville Cardinals appeared to have a big play when quarterback Tyler Shough had a 46-yard run. But cornerback Leonard Moore and safety Xavier Watts hit him and Moore forced a fumble, recovered by Jaiden Ausberry.

That got the Irish the ball back in good field position — and shut down what appeared to be a promising drive for the Cardinals.

Instead, the Irish were in a solid position to score. Notre Dame’s defense is a strength of the team, and it showed on this play.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Jeremiyah Love evens it up

Notre Dame ties it with a Jeremiyah Love TD.

A Notre Dame fumble on the opening kickoff against Louisville gave the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead — and the Fighting Irish faithful heartburn.

Notre Dame fans probably feel a bit better after the Irish responded with an effective drive that included a fourth-down conversion and was capped off by a 6-yard touchdown run from Jeremiyah Love.

The touchdown drive took 12 plays and 75 yards. Quarterback Riley Leonard hit Jayden Thomas for 5 yards on fourth-and-three to keep the drive alive, and Leonard had a key 12-yard run one play before Love punched it in.

Notre Dame and Louisville are now tied at 7 with 7:22 left to play in the first quarter.

Notre Dame Week 5 injury report is clean

Here is the Notre Dame Week 5 injury report.

The No. 16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will need all hands on deck against the No. 15 Louisville Cardinals in South Bend today.

And with the obvious exception of players who are out for the season, the injury report looks clean for this week.

Every player listed on the team’s two-deep roster will be available for the Irish as they face their first real test since losing to Northern Illinois.

A win keeps Notre Dame’s playoff hopes alive, while a loss could end the playoff run. At the very least, if the Irish lose to Louisville, they will be hoping for a lot of other big losses in the Top 25 over the remainder of the season.

Louisville presents a huge challenge for Notre Dame, and while the Irish are missing players like Jordan Botelho who are done for the season, they at least have a relatively healthy roster for the showdown with the Cardinals.

Louisville will have one star back, but will miss one against Notre Dame

Some good and bad news for the Cardinals as they prepare for the Irish

As we wait for the kickoff between Notre Dame and Louisville later this afternoon, there was news about two Cardinals playing status.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that transfer wide receiver [autotag]Caullin Lacy[/autotag] is expected make his debut against the Irish today as he will “give it a shot” to get on the field. The senior had a huge year in 2023 with South Alabama, catching 91 passes for 1,316 yards and 7 touchdowns.

His return gives Louisville another weapon to test the Notre Dame secondary.  Speaking of defensive backs, it looks like the Cardinals will be without [autotag]Quincy Riley[/autotag], as Thamel is report that he will is doubtful for the game.

He is one of the biggest playmakers on their defense, as he’s picked off a pass and forced a fumble so far this year. It’s clearly a good news and bad news situation for the Irish. Hopefully the Notre Dame secondary is ready for Lacy while the wide receivers take advantage of Riley’s absence.

Louisville Cardinals defensive back Quincy Riley (3) runs the ball down the field during their game against the Austin Peay Governors on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024 at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

Experts seem cautiously optimistic about Notre Dame over Louisville

While not every expert is picking Notre Dame this week, a decent amount feel cautiously optimistic about the Fighting Irish over Louisville.

It’s almost certainly not hyperbole to suggest that Notre Dame’s home game against Louisville this weekend could determine the Fighting Irish’s postseason fate.

Even before Notre Dame suffered a shocking loss to Northern Illinois, the matchup against the Cardinals was considered one of the biggest tests for the Irish, along with the season opener at Texas A&M and the tilt with Florida State — at least until the Seminoles fell apart.

Notre Dame Nation is likely nervous about this game, both because it’s the first true test since the NIU debacle and because the Cardinals effectively ended the Irish’s postseason bid last season.

There is one key difference from 2023 — this year’s game is in South Bend. Maybe the green jerseys will help

Can the Fighting Irish beat Louisville? Some experts think so.
Notre Dame running back Jadarian Price runs the ball up the field during a NCAA college football game between Notre Dame and Northern Illinois at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, in South Bend.

With that in mind, the experts have their picks in, and it’s a mixed bag, though some pundits are leaning towards the Irish.

Notre Dame football’s game trailer for Louisville has dropped

Too hot for TV!

You know it is almost game day when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football social media account releases its newest trailer.

As we have seen during the week, there was some doubt that the Irish would wear green, then yesterday it was confirmed that they would. The Notre Dame captains made the decision, as head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] explained earlier in the week.

Regarding the actual game, the Louisville Cardinals boast multiple players that won’t be easy for Notre Dame to stop. We’ve made our predictions as to how Saturday afternoon will play out, along with some of the other top games across college football during Week 5.

The theme of old school hip-hop marches on, as they used one of my personal favorite songs “Da Rockwilder” by Redman and Method Man. Check out below the latest Notre Dame football game trailer as they welcome in the Louisville Cardinals.

ESPN answers how important Louisville at Notre Dame is for the College Football Playoff

It’s more than you’d think

Notre Dame will be hosting Louisville this coming Saturday, in one of the biggest games across college football during Week 5.

While the No. 2 Georgia at No. 4 Alabama highlights the slate, it’s a game where each team could recover from the loss and still make the [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag]. ESPN’s Heather Dinich predicted who will make the 12-team field, and unfortunately for the Irish, she does not currently have them in (subscription required).

The four teams: Clemson, Michigan, USC and Notre Dame were her first four teams to miss the CFP, but there is hope for the Irish. Dinich explains that if they defeat the Cardinals on Saturday, then the hopes to make the tournament go to around 50%.

The bad news is that if Notre Dame falls to Louisville, the chances are significantly lower, to a measly 11%. Dinich notes that according to ESPN Analytics, there isn’t another game being played across the country that will have a bigger impact on the CFP race than in South Bend this weekend.

Notre Dame still has plenty to play for this season, but if they don’t take care of business against Louisville, it may be a lost cause.

Duke football left standing as one of four undefeated ACC teams

Just as everyone expected, through four weeks of the college football season, the Duke Blue Devils are one of four undefeated ACC teams.

Through four weeks of the college football season, only four ACC teams remain undefeated, and one of them plays football in Durham.

The Duke Blue Devils defeated Middle Tennessee on Saturday, a 45-17 triumph that featured four turnovers and a two-touchdown game from tight end Nicky Dalmolin.

The fourth straight win puts Duke alongside the Miami Hurricanes, Louisville Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Panthers as the last of the ACC unbeatens (although Louisville has only played three games due to an early bye week).

The Blue Devils haven’t entirely cruised through lower-level opponents, either. Duke traveled to Northwestern and took down the Wildcats in overtime two weeks ago, one of the few Power Four road wins on the conference resume in 2024.

Under first-year head coach Manny Diaz, the team sits 21st in ESPN’s strength of record calculations, which measures how impressive a team’s win-loss record is given its strength of schedule.

The Hurricanes have blown out all four of their opponents so far this season, averaging 52.3 points per game on offense, and the Cardinals took down Georgia Tech to open their ACC schedule this weekend. Pittsburgh, the other surprise among the four teams listed, overcame a 21-point deficit on the road against Cincinnati before scoring two touchdowns in the final five minutes against West Virginia the following week.

Duke tries to remain a part of the exclusive club when the Blue Devils host the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday.
