After scoring only one touchdown in the first half of tonight’s game against Louisiana Tech at Death Valley, fourth-ranked Clemson found the end zone on each of its first two possessions of the second half.

Following Will Shipley’s 32-yard touchdown run on Clemson’s opening possession of the third quarter, Phil Mafah punched the ball in for a 4-yard touchdown run that gave the Tigers a 27-6 lead over the Bulldogs with 5:25 left in the third frame.

Clemson took over at its own 10-yard line following an interception by Malcolm Greene — the Tigers’ third interception of the night — and Mafah’s score capped an impressive 14-play, 90-yard drive that spanned 6:46.

Clemson headed into halftime holding onto a 13-6 lead over Louisiana Tech.

The Tigers, who entered Saturday’s contest as 33.5-point favorites, recorded 214 yards of total offense in the first half and had just 13 points to show for it. Clemson had to settle for field goals on two of its three trips inside the 20.

As for Clemson’s starting quarterback, D.J. Uiagalelei’s touch on the ball was off at times during the first half of Saturday’s game, and yet he completed 12-of-20 passes for 144 yards. He also added 42 yards on the ground on six carries.

Will Shipley carried the ball five times for 35 yards, averaging seven yards per carry. The sophomore running back had Clemson’s lone touchdown of the first half.

Clemson’s first drive from scrimmage ended in three points off the foot of B.T. Potter, but it was an anti-climatic finish after a rather promising start. Uiagalelei completed screen passes to Brannon Spector and Joseph Ngata, respectively, before taking off for a 19-yard run.

While Clemson’s red zone offense stalled on the first drive, the Tigers would follow that up with a six-play, 79-yard drive, culminating in Shipley’s fifth rushing touchdown of the season. In order for Shipley to find paydirt again, Uiagalelei completed two passes for 56 yards, including a 41-yard strike to Ngata, who finished the first half with three catches.

Clemson would turn the tables on Tech on the ensuing drive.

While moving the football down the field, the Bulldogs attempted a double pass. Clemson didn’t bite and stayed home, and yet sophomore receiver Tre Harris decided to throw the football anyway. R.J. Mickens tracked down the ball for his third career interception.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Sonny Cumbie had his kicker, Jacob Barnes, line up for a 56-yard field goal. Payton Page blocked the kick, which stood no chance, but the Bulldogs ended back up with the football after Barrett Carter fumbled away the recovery.

Barnes later would connect on field goals of 27 and 35-yards to get Tech within one possession.

Tech quarterback Parker McNeil accounted for 152 of the team’s 151 yards of total yards, completing 12-of-20 passes for 152 yards. Meanwhile, Tech netted a negative rushing yard on 10 attempts.

The Bulldogs will receive the second-half kickoff.

Joseph Ngata layed out and fully extended to make a highlight-reel, diving grab at Louisiana Tech’s 5-yard line.

Two plays later, Will Shipley powered the ball in for a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 10-0 lead over the Bulldogs with 6:24 left in the first quarter.

Shipley’s fifth rushing touchdown over the first three games this season capped the six-play, 79-yard scoring drive. It marks Shipley’s sixth consecutive game with a touchdown.

Swinney hopes Tigers’ play Saturday night brings some joy to Bresee family

The Clemson football team will be playing with a heavy heart tonight against Louisiana Tech as redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Bryan Bresee’s 15-year-old sister, Ella, passed away earlier this week following a battle with brain cancer.

ACC Network’s Kelsey Riggs spoke with Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney ahead of tonight’s game and asked Swinney what he has said to his players about channeling their emotion with what they’re working through right now.

“It’s been a tough week, a heavy week,” Swinney said. “But you know, it’s also given us an opportunity to have some real conversations. These are young people and this is a tough moment, and they’re all sharing in the pain with the Bresee family. But hopefully we can play in a way Saturday night that will bring them a little bit of joy in that moment. I don’t know if they’ll be watching. So, the biggest thing we need to do is stay focused on the task at hand and what we’re trying to do, and I think that’ll put a smile on Bryan’s face for sure.”

As for tonight’s game against the Bulldogs at Death Valley (8 p.m., ACCN), Riggs asked Swinney what he is telling his team about staying in the moment and not looking too far ahead.

“This is a tough challenge. La Tech’s got a bunch of dudes. They’ve got enough to beat us, for sure,” Swinney said. “We’ve got to play well, and we’re going into the third game. We’ve got a lot to continue to work on. So, we’ve yet to play four quarters. We’ve done a good job of compensating for each other, and good teams can do that. But great teams complement each other, and that’s what I’d like to see us do. So, we’ve just got to continue to apply the lessons we’ve learned from these first two weeks and truly be in the moment because that’s the only thing that matters is what we do Saturday night.”

CLEMSON FACES LOUISIANA TECH IN PRIME TIME ON SATURDAY

For the first time this season, the Clemson Tigers will play on a normal cadence this week when the team hosts the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is set for 8 p.m. ET.
Clemson opened the season with a long lead-up to its Monday night opener against Georgia Tech before facing Furman on a five-day turnaround last week.

“There’s a reason why you don’t see many people play on Monday night on the road and then play again on Saturday,” Head Coach Dabo Swinney said. “I’m thankful we can have a normal week. This will be our first normal
week of the year. We haven’t had a normal week yet, so I’m excited about that.”

Saturday’s game will be Clemson’s second of the season in prime time but its first night game at Death Valley in 2022. Clemson is 41-7 at night since 2015 and 22-4 in night games since 2018. Under newly installed LED lights as part of recent renovations to Memorial Stadium, Clemson will attempt to win its 18th consecutive night game in Death Valley, a streak that dates to the middle of the 2013 season.

Clemson is coming off a 35-12 win against Furman in Death Valley in the Tigers’ home opener. It marked the 35th consecutive game in which the Tigers have walked out of Memorial Stadium victorious, tying the 2006-11
Boise State Broncos for the 14th-longest home winning streak in FBS history. Clemson’s streak is only the 15th home winning streak of 35 games or more in FBS history and is two games shy of the ACC record (Florida State, 37 from 1992-2001).

WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEK

– Clemson (eight) attempting to extend the Power Five’s longest active winning streak.
– Clemson attempting to post the 14th winning streak of nine games or more in program history.

– Clemson attempting to win its 36th consecutive home game to extend its school record for both the longest home winning streak and longest home unbeaten streak in school history (as well as extend the nation’s longest
active home winning streak). No member of Clemson’s roster has lost a home game at Clemson in their careers.
– Clemson (35) attempting to pass 2006-11 Boise State (35) for sole possession of the 14th-longest home winning streak in FBS history. It would pull Clemson within one game of the ACC record (Florida State, 37 from 1992-2001).
– Clemson attempting to improve to 23-4 in night games since the start of the 2018 season. A win would move Clemson to 42-7 at night since 2015.
– Clemson attempting to win its 18th consecutive night game in Death Valley, a streak that dates back to the middle of the 2013 season.
– Clemson attempting to add to its national-best 54-1 record at home in the College Football Playoff era (since 2014).

HISTORY VS. NEW COACHES

Saturday’s game will be the first of three games this season in which Clemson is scheduled to face an opposing head coach for the first time. This year, the Tigers will face Louisiana Tech’s Sonny Cumbie, Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman and Miami’s Mario Cristobal for the first time. Since 2011, Clemson is 40-4 when facing an opposing head coach for the first time.

NIGHT MOVES

Clemson’s 8 p.m. ET kickoff against Louisiana Tech will represent Clemson’s second night game of the 2022 season. Clemson was 4-1 in night games in 2021 and won its 2022 night debut in the season opener at Georgia Tech.

The contest will be Clemson’s 49th night game since the start of the 2015 season. In that time, Clemson is 41-7 in night games, including a 22-4 mark since the start of the 2018 season. Clemson has won its last 17 night games in Death Valley, a streak that dates back to the middle of the 2013 season.

WITH THE WIN…

– Clemson earned its eighth straight victory, dating to last season, the longest active winning streak in the Power Five.
– Clemson won its 19th straight home debut. The win extended Clemson’s longest winning streak in home openers all-time, ahead of its 17 from 1944-60.
– Clemson improved to 97-17-8 in home openers.
– Clemson won its 35th consecutive home game to extend its school record for both the longest home winning streak and longest home unbeaten streak in school history.
– Clemson’s 35-game home winning streak is the nation’s longest home winning streak. No member of Clemson’s roster has lost a home game at Clemson in their careers.
– Clemson (35) tied the 2006-11 Boise State Broncos for the 14th-longest home winning streak in FBS history. Clemson’s streak is only the 15th home winning streak of 35 games or more in FBS history and pulls Clemson
within two games of the ACC record (Florida State, 37 from 1992-2001).
– Clemson is now a national-best 54-1 at home in the College Football Playoff era (since 2014).

TCI Predictions

Clemson vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Sonny Cumbie’s team has been solid so far offensively.

The Bulldogs might have lost at Missouri, but the passing game came up with 336 yards and three scores. In the win over Stephen F. Austin, the ground attack hit 300 yards.

The defense might have had issues against Mizzou, but it changed up fast with a good day and four takeaways in last week’s win.

The D has to keep forcing mistakes – six takeaways so far – Clemson isn’t controlling the clock, and the downfield passing game still isn’t there. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Clemson Will Win

The Louisiana Tech run defense isn’t working.

Missouri did whatever it wanted to on the ground, and Stephen F. Austin averaged close to four yards per carry. There might be plays in the backfield, but the sacks aren’t there to bother the Tiger quarterbacks.

Forget about any Bulldog running yards. It might have rolled last week, but it only came up with eight net yards against Missouri – that’s more like what the O is going to be against the better teams.

After a rough day against Georgia Tech – even in a 41-10 win – Clemson wasn’t amazing against Furman, but the ground attack was great, DJ Uiagalelei hit 78% of his throws and was better down the field, and the team looked the part.

The O will be fine, the D will be great, and it’s going to be tough for Louisiana Tech’s lines to hold up.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson will be playing with a heavy heart with star DT Bryan Bresee going through the pain of losing his sister to cancer this week. Not that a tragedy like that should have any bearing on a silly game, but the entire tone of the day will be more respectful than raucous.

In the game itself, the Clemson defensive front will keep Louisiana Tech from doing much of anything right, Uiagalelei will have another strong day, and the team will keep on winning – even if it’s not always perfect.
