Louisiana Tech vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs battled well against Clemson in a 48-20 loss, the passing attack was fine against Missouri, and the ground game rolled in the win over Stephen F. Austin. This is the first game against someone who’s truly their own size.

Even with the 1-2 start, the offense has been scoring, the passing attack under Sonny Cumbie is doing Sonny Cumbie passing attack things, and now it gets to go against a South Alabama defense that doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush and doesn’t get behind the line.

Give the Bulldog quarterbacks time and they’ll roll. But …

Why South Alabama Will Win

Louisiana Tech turns it over way too much, giving the ball aways eight times with seven picks.

No, the Jaguars don’t generate a pass rush, but quarterbacks are only hitting 55% of their passes so far and they’re not consistent enough.

For all of the good things the Louisiana Tech passing game has done, it’s only connecting on 55% of its throws with seven touchdowns to go along with the seven picks.

The Jaguars have a nice mix of offensive things happening. The ground game is enough for the Bulldogs to worry about, QB Carter Bradley and the passing game have been great over the first few games, and …

What’s Going To Happen

South Alabama doesn’t have the turnover issues Louisiana Tech does. The Jaguar defense hasn’t done much to take it away, and it needs to be more disruptive, but it’ll control the game.

It’ll be the USA running game that takes over and helps the O keep the ball for well over 35 minutes.

Analysts discuss what they saw from Uiagalelei, Clemson offense vs. La Tech

On ACC Network’s “The ACC Huddle” show following Clemson’s 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech at Death Valley on Saturday night, ACCN analysts Eric Mac Lain and EJ Manuel gave their takeaways from what they saw from DJ Uiagalelei and the Tigers’ offense against the Bulldogs.

Uiagalelei was 17-of-29 for 221 yards and two scores through the air and picked up 62 yards on the ground on nine carries, guiding a Clemson offense that gained a season-high 521 total yards, including 280 rushing on 39 attempts (7.2 average).

The Tigers (3-0, 1-0 ACC) put up 35 points in the second half and outscored the Bulldogs by 21 over the final two quarters.

“I mean, that’s what you wanted to see,” said Mac Lain, the former Clemson and All-ACC offensive lineman. “We spoke about halftime adjustments, what do you need to see from this offensive line, and those guys picked it up. They ran the ball extremely well. When you outgain your opponent and you’re rushing for 7 yards every time you tote the rock, that’s an impressive thing.

“So, to see the growth there, the response there to put up 48 points, and then just the continued response from DJ – to see a guy that struggled so much a year ago and is just finding his groove, is proving people wrong each and every day, and to keep seeing that growth. He admitted that there were a couple of flashes where there were some drops or some miscues. But overall, a very impressive two weeks in a row for DJ.”

A week earlier against Furman, the junior quarterback threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns while completing 21 of 27 passes for a completion percentage of 77.8 percent — the highest completion percentage Uiagalelei has posted when attempting at least 25 passes.

Manuel, the former Florida State and NFL quarterback, believes Uiagalelei’s play so far this season has solidified his spot as Clemson’s QB1.

“When you talk about DJ Uiagalelei and this quarterback (controversy), that’s dead,” he said. “DJ’s the starter. I think that team obviously knows that. They’re going to follow as he goes, and he’s playing really clean football.”

Manuel added that he thought Uiagalelei’s wide receivers played better against Louisiana Tech.

Freshman Antonio Williams had a team-high 57 receiving yards on two catches and hauled in his first career touchdown reception on a beautifully thrown 19-yard pass from Uiagalelei. Sophomore Beaux Collins had two grabs for 47 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown reception from Uiagalelei, while senior Joseph Ngata notched three receptions for 54 yards, highlighted by a spectacular, diving 41-yard snag in the first quarter.

“Some of those deep balls, they brought in with one hand, two hands going up, catching those 50-50 passes,” Manuel said. “Against a team like Wake Forest next week, they’re going to have to do that. So, I thought this was a step in the right direction.”

Fifth-ranked Clemson’s game at No. 21 Wake Forest (3-0, 0-0 ACC) on Saturday will kick off at noon ET on ABC.

“Clemson hasn’t really been challenged yet,” Manuel said. “I think the first big challenge comes from a veteran quarterback in Sam Hartman at Wake Forest, a team that can run the football and then a team that does pretty good defensively as well. They’ve got some miscues, too, where they can’t tackle guys in the open field. But I think next week’s going to be a really good matchup to see which team is going to be who.”

Shipley discusses his confidence level in Clemson’s offense right now

Following Clemson’s 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday night at Death Valley, sophomore running back Will Shipley expressed plenty of confidence in the state of the Tigers’ offense heading into the meat of their schedule, starting with Saturday’s ACC Atlantic Division clash at Wake Forest.

Clemson gained 521 total yards against Louisiana Tech, a season high, and the Tigers’ 280 rushing yards were also a season high — their highest single-game rushing total since a 332-yard rushing effort against Wake Forest last season.

Clemson reached the 40-point threshold for the first time since back-to-back 40-point games against UConn and Wake Forest last season.

“I feel very confident in the offense right now,” said Shipley, who rushed 12 times for a career-high 139 yards with two touchdowns.

“We’ve got things to clean up, but it’s things that you can watch film, and if you’re coachable, you can get in practice and get ready for the game on Saturday, and I believe that’s what it comes down to is being coachable. I think we’ve got a bunch of guys on the offense who want to learn and want to get better throughout the year. So, I’m very comfortable with where we are right now.”

Mac Lain: Clemson’s defense has not met the standard

Following Clemson’s 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech, former Clemson lineman Eric Mac Lain discussed the defense on the ACC Network’s show The ACC Huddle.

“I think going back to that defense, it is very important to remember these guys were down six, seven stars, like players, guys,” Mac Lain said following the game. “So any time you are having to put in second- and third-team guys, now certainly there is a standard you hope is set — that next man up, you got to go. But you saw that time and time again.”

The secondary was certainly not up to the standard Saturday night.

“You mentioned the corners at halftime just being really soft, not getting that pressure, and quite frankly La. Tech was able to take some whole shots and really pick up some yardage,” Mac Lain said.

While he is not ready to say he is concerned with the Tigers’ defense, there is plenty of room for improvement to meet the expectations.

“So I don’t think concern is the word yet, but the defense needs to do better than they are because we thought this was going to be one of the best-of-all-time types of deals,” Mac Lain said. “And quite frankly right now they have not met that standard.”

Clemson moves past Louisiana Tech with dominant second half

Three weeks into Clemson’s season and Dabo Swinney’s team has yet to dominate an opponent for 60 minutes.

Saturday’s 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech Saturday night at Memorial Stadium was another tale of two halves.

After a lackluster first half, in which Clemson scored just 13 points and allowed Louisiana Tech to hang around, Clemson’s defense — and its offense — answered the bell. Clemson outscored the Bulldogs 35-14 in the second half en route to a 28-point victory.

Down by a touchdown, Tech had the ball to start the second half.

Instead of making it a game, Sonny Cumbie’s team allowed Saturday’s contest to get away from them. Clemson forced interceptions on back-to-back possessions before stopping the Bulldogs on fourth-and-two from their own 33-yard line,

Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. came away with Clemson’s second interception of the game as the Tigers’ defensive front baited Parker McNeil into an errant throw. McNeil’s first interception of the game came on the heels of two false start penalties and a batted-down pass.

On the next play from scrimmage, Shipley scampered for a 32-yard touchdown — his second of the game. With his early third-quarter score, Shipley now has multiple scores in each of Clemson’s first three games. The sophomore running back accounted for 139 of Clemson’s 280 rushing yards Saturday.

While Tech turned the ball over on its first offensive possession of the second half, that didn’t exactly take the wind out of the Bulldogs’ sail. That was for at least for a handful of plays, in which Tech drove the football down the field. Then, the wheels began to fall off as McNeil was intercepted for a second time on the evening.

Clemson took over at its own 10-yard line following an interception by Malcolm Greene — the Tigers’ third interception of the night — and Phil Mafah’s four-yard score capped an impressive 14-play, 90-yard drive that spanned six minutes and 46 seconds.

On Clemson’s very next offensive play from scrimmage, D.J. Uiagalelei connected with Beaux Collins for a 32-yard touchdown pass. That would be Uiagalelei’s last throw for a couple of offensive possessions before being replaced by Cade Klubnik with just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Uiagalelei finished Saturday’s contest, completing 59% of his passes (17-of-29) with 221 passing yards and two touchdowns. He added 62 yards on the ground on nine carries, averaging 6.9 yards per carry.

Uiagalelei would later find true freshman wide receiver Antonio Williams for a 19-yard score. Williams, who hails from in-state powerhouse Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) hauled in two receptions for 57 yards, in addition to scoring his first career touchdown.

As for Klubnik, the true freshman signal-caller got a lot more run time in his second career game in The Valley. The Westlake (Texas) product went 2-of-5 passing with 19 yards. He also had seven yards on the ground.

Klubnik would later be relieved by Hunter Johnson.

While Saturday’s box score would indicate a clean third quarter, the Tigers still allowed for some big completions. Despite his shortcomings Saturday, McNeil completed passes of 28, 26 and 46 yards in the third quarter alone. Even with the turnovers, McNeil at times was able to carve up a Clemson secondary that was absent Andrew Mukuba and Nate Wiggins, as well as Sheridan Jones, who was in street clothes for the second half.

McNeil completed 23-of-42 passes for 311 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He didn’t have his way with Clemson’s secondary like Georgia Tech’s Jeff Sims and Furman’s Tyler Huff did, but he exposed some deficiencies in the Tigers’ defensive backfield.

Will Shipley put on a show — and made history in the process — in fourth-ranked Clemson’s 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech at Death Valley on Saturday night.

The sophomore running back had a big game against the Bulldogs, rushing for two touchdowns and a career-high 139 yards on just 12 carries for an average of 11.6 yards per tote.

Shipley surpassed his previous career high in rushing yards of 128, which he set vs. Florida State on Oct. 30, 2021, and tied at South Carolina on Nov. 27, 2021.

After rushing five times for 35 yards and a touchdown in the first half, Shipley racked up 104 rushing yards and another score on seven attempts in the final two quarters.

Shipley scored the lone touchdown of the first half when he powered into the end zone from 2 yards out to give Clemson (3-0) a 10-0 lead with 6:24 left in the first quarter.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder later notched the first of what would be five Clemson touchdowns in the second half, when he turned on the jets for a 32-yard score 20 seconds into the third quarter that put the Tigers ahead 20-6.

Saturday night marked Shipley’s sixth consecutive game scoring a touchdown, dating to Clemson’s game vs. Wake Forest on Nov. 20, 2021.

Shipley had two rushing touchdowns in the 2022 season opener against Georgia Tech and added two more scores on the ground in last Saturday’s game against Furman.

On his 32-yard touchdown run against Louisiana Tech, Shipley became the first Clemson player in records back to 1950 to open a season with multiple rushing touchdowns in each of the first three games of a season.

Additionally, Shipley is the first Clemson player to score at least five rushing touchdowns in the first three games of a season since quarterback Kelly Bryant in 2017. Shipley is the first Clemson running back to accomplish the feat since James Davis in 2006.

Including Saturday’s performance against Louisiana Tech, Shipley now has 32 carries for 249 yards and six touchdowns through three games this season.

As a team, the Tigers ran for 280 yards and four touchdowns on 39 carries against the Bulldogs, averaging 7.2 yards per attempt.
