Girl who alleges Paul Gonzales molested her receives settlement

The girl who accused her boxing coach, 1984 Olympic champion Paul Gonzales, of molesting her received a payout from Los Angeles County.

Former boxer Paul Gonzales is awaiting trial on charges of molesting a teenager in 2017. In the meantime, his alleged victim will receive a settlement, according to City News Service.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday agreed to pay $625,000 to the 13-year-old girl, who was a student of Gonzales when the 1984 Olympic gold medalist taught boxing for the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department.

Gonzalez, 55, pleaded not guilty on eight felony counts. The lawsuit alleges Gonzalez sexually battered, assaulted and harassed the girl. He also is accused of sexual calls and texts to the girl, as well as solicitation of and sending sexual images.

The boxer was arrested on Dec. 29, 2017.

“We believe that he befriended her and that he groomed her and we believe that lewd conduct was committed against her over a period of time,” sheriff’s Lt. Todd Deeds said after his arrest.

The girl’s mother contacted police after discovering the photos and texts.

Gonzalez fought professionally from 1985 to 1991, compiling a record of 16-4 (3 KOs). He lost his only world title fight as a result of cuts to Orlando Canizales in 1990.
