The 2022 NFL season still isn’t in the books and fans of every team except the two in the Super Bowl are already looking ahead to the start of free agency and the new league year.
Cody Benjamin over at CBS Sports took a hard look at all 32 clubs to decide which players each team could not afford to lose during free agency. Not surprisingly, quarterback Geno Smith was his pick for the Seahawks.
“One of the trickiest evaluations of this year’s available veteran QBs, Smith looked like a genuinely different man for much of 2022, showcasing poise and decisiveness that was never apparent early in his career,” Benjamin writes. “Down the stretch, he was far more prone to forced throws, and Seattle’s draft capital suggests a new face of the franchise could — and should — be on the way. Still, as a potential placeholder, you can do quite a bit worse. His familiarity with the system is a bonus.”
After signing only a one-year contract with Seattle last offseason, Smith will become an unrestricted free agent this March if he and the Seahawks aren’t able to reach a new deal.
Smith has proven he’s worthy of being a starting quarterback in the NFL and will likely demand he’s paid what he’s due. The Seahawks’ front office and Smith’s camp are in for some interesting negotiations in the near future.
