Josh Jacobs and Las Vegas Raiders unable to reach a long-term deal

Josh Jacobs and Las Vegas Raiders don’t reach a long-term extension

Just four years ago the Las Vegas Raiders selected running back Josh Jacobs out of Alabama with the No. 19 overall selection in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. Now, it is beginning to appear as if the two sides are heading into their final season together.

Last April, the Raiders declined Jacobs’ fifth-year option on his rookie contract making him a free agent this offseason. When the 2023 offseason arrived, the Raiders placed the infamous franchise tag on Jacobs to keep him in Vegas for one more year while the two sides try to reach a long-term deal. The deadline for franchise players to be extended to a long-term deal was Monday at 4 p.m. ET, which came and passed with no deal.

With no deal reached, Jacobs is yet to sign his $10.091 million franchise tag tender for the upcoming season, so they won’t be fined for missing training camp. It is Jacobs’s game checks he would lose if the holdout lasts into the regular season.

Jacobs is coming off of far and away the best season of his NFL career and rightfully deserves to be paid. His value is at an all-time high, so delaying another season for a potentially long-term contract is not in his best interest. Especially considering there are no promises that any other team will sign him to a long-term deal in the modern NFL which has entirely devalued the RB position. Jacobs was the NFL’s rushing yards leader in 2022 with 1,653 on 340 carries which was good enough to earn him a First-team All-Pro selection.

Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster expresses desire to stay in Kansas City beyond 2022

#Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster is only signed through 2022, but he says if it were up to him he would stay in Kansas City long-term.

One of the biggest pieces of the Kansas City Chiefs’ new-look receiver group has expressed the desire to stay with the team beyond the length of his contract.

JuJu Smith-Schuster signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs for the 2022 NFL season worth up to $10.75 million back in March. The team already amended his contract to give him a raise on his per-game roster bonuses for the season. What they haven’t done yet is find a way to lock Smith-Schuster up as a part of the offense long-term.

Speaking to media members on Thursday, Smith-Schuster was asked about how open he is to stay in Kansas City beyond his one-year deal. His answer is exactly what you’d expect.

“I would love to stay here, to be honest,” Smith-Schuster told reporters. “This offense is unbelievable. This coaching staff is unbelievable. If it was up to me, of course, why not? I get to play with one of the best quarterbacks in the game. So, yeah.”

Through eight games this season, Smith-Schuster has recorded 44 receptions for 582 yards and two touchdowns. He pacing to have his best season since 2018, which was the best season of his NFL career and his lone selection to the Pro Bowl.

Smith-Schuster’s brief time in the K.C. offense has been everything that he expected it to be.

“I knew it was a high-powered offense just looking at numbers,” Smith-Schuster said. “Coming here, it just, you know. Last year we were kind of talking about the same thing, they were talking about it, ‘This is what the offense is supposed to do.’ And actually now being here and being in it, it’s (as advertised).”

It remains to be seen whether the Chiefs make an effort to retain Smith-Schuster beyond 2022. With the rising wide receiver market this past offseason, it’s hard to decipher what his value might look like come free agency this March. He has every reason to wait to sign a deal until after the season concludes. Now, we at least know where Smith-Schuster stands with nine weeks of the NFL’s regular season remaining.

Josh Gordon wants to remain in Seattle for the foreseeable future

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Josh Gordon told reporters about his desire to remain in the Emerald City for the foreseeable future.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Josh Gordon has only spent a little over a month in the Emerald City, but it sounds like he is already satisfied with his current living environment.

“Oh yeah, absolutely,” Gordon told reporters via NBC Sports Northwest. “Seattle is amazing. Football aside, I’d definitely love to live in a place like this.”

However, Gordon also praised the Seahawks’ culture and chemistry on the field, as well as the competitive nature of the team.

“I think I’m just fortunate in general to have landed in a place like this with a coach like this,” Gordon said. “It’s real family-like. It’s real close, real tight-knit – a real lively, energetic group. And competitive more than anything. They love the game of football. You can see it. It’s a great feeling to come back to football and enjoy what you do.”

With six receptions for 81 yards through four games and most of them being crucial catches, Gordon is taking things from game to game and from play to play in the Seahawks offense.

“Anywhere I can be of use to the team, to the offense, to try and get us a catch, move the chains, five yards, it doesn’t matter,” Gordon said. “Any way to try and make a positive influence on the game plan, I’m there for it.”

In addition to making contributions to the Seahawks’ ambitions this season, Gordon wishes to stay in Seattle for the long-term future.

“That’s my hope,” Gordon said. “Thinking optimistically, I think that’s every player’s goal: to try and find a place you can call home. In all aspects I think that’s a bonus.”
