Promoter Bob Arum would love to stage the Oct. 17 Vasiliy Lomachenko-Teofimo Lopez lightweight title-unification bout in front of spectators for obvious reasons.

The reality is that it’s not possible, at least not indoors in Nevada. Thus, the fight will take place inside the MGM Grand “bubble” in Las Vegas, where Top Rank has staged its cards during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Oct. 17 card will be televised on ESPN.

Vasiliy Lomachenko arrives in U.S. for Teofimo Lopez clash

Vasiliy Lomachenko has arrived in the U.S. to continue training for his Oct. 17 lightweight title unification fight against Teofimo Lopez.

Vasiliy Lomachenko has arrived in the U.S. to continue training for his Oct. 17 lightweight title unification fight against Teofimo Lopez. And he reportedly is pumped.

The 32-year-old Ukrainian star, ranked No. 1 pound-for-pound by Boxing Junkie, landed at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday night. He’ll hold camp at his home gym in Camarillo, about a one-hour drive north of downtown L.A.

“He was in a very happy mood,” Egis Klimas, the fighter’s manager, told ESPN. “We called Bob [Arum], and we said, ‘Bob, Loma is here,’ and Bob gave us a little speech about how happy everybody is, excited about [the fight], and Loma just said a couple of words: ‘Bob, I can’t wait for Oct. 17.'”

“… It’s the most excited he’s ever been for a fight because he says, ‘Finally, we are in a fight everyone is waiting for.’ Because even before, they were good fights, [but] people weren’t talking about it. But this fight everybody is waiting for.”

Klimas believes we haven’t seen the best of Lomachenko.

“Let me tell you: Nobody has seen Vasiliy in the ring more than 65 percent of what he can do because he has never had any opponents who could push him in the ring,” he said. “Nobody can push him with what he needs to show what he can do 100 percent. So we never saw who really Lomachenko is.”

Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) holds three of the four major 135-pound titles, including the WBC’s “franchise” title. He’s coming off a unanimous-decision victory over Luke Campbell in August of last year.

Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs) holds the IBF belt. He last fought this past December, when he stopped Richard Commey in two rounds to win his title.

The fight will take place inside the MGM Grand “bubble” in Las Vegas. It will be televised on ESPN.

Vasiliy Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez agree to terms: reports

The Vasilily Lomachenko-Teofimo Lopez Jr. fight reportedly is on for October, although the contracts have not yet been signed.

The Vasilily Lomachenko-Teofimo Lopez Jr. fight is on for October, although the contracts had not yet been signed, according to multiple reports.

Top Rank and David McWater, Lopez’s manager, agreed to terms on Wednesday after negotiations hit an impasse over the Lopez’s portion of the purse. Lopez earlier agreed on his share.

The fight, originally targeted for Oct. 3, will take place on Oct. 17 or 24 in the MGM Grand “bubble” in Las Vegas. BoxingScene is reporting that it is likely to be televised on ESPN, not pay-per-view.

Tefimo Lopez Sr., the fighter’s father and trainer, told the website that his sign expected to sign paperwork on Thursday.

“We came to an agreement,” McWater said. “The fight will take place later in October than Oct. 3, but we have a deal. It was a complicated deal but we made it. [Bob] Arum and I have been talking and we finally got it done.”

According to reports, the sides had to determine how to split an estimated $4.7 million overall purse. Lomachenko was offered around $3.45 million, which left $1.25 for Lopez, who demanded more and held out.

And his intransigence apparently has paid off. He reportedly will receive around $2 million. Lomachenko had said he would be willing to accept less money to make the fight happen.

“Bob was a complete gentleman. He never raised his voice to me,” McWater told BoxingScene. “Everything with Bob was completely businesslike. We’re both businessmen. It was easy, not easy. You know? It was one of those things that everybody was a gentleman and polite.

“We had to make an arrangement and we got to something where everyone was happy.”

As a result, fans will get to see one of the more compelling possible matchups in the sport.

Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) is No. 1 on Boxing Junkie’s pound-for-pound list and holds three of the four major lightweight titles, one being the WBC’s “franchise” title. Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs), a dynamic young boxer-puncher, holds the fourth belt.

Some believe Lomachenko, 32, is vulnerable in what could be a torch-passing event.

“The whole world will see it and we will get more recognition when we beat Lomachenko, and that’s good for us,” Lopez Sr. said. “It’s going to be a beautiful fight between two great fighters doing the best that they can do to win.”

Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez appears set for Sept. 19

Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez appear to be headed toward a Sept. 19 showdown.

Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez appear to be headed toward a Sept. 19 showdown.

That’s the date Top Rank’s Bob Arum gave ESPN for the lightweight title-unification bout that was supposed to have taken place on May 30 at Madison Square Garden. It was canceled because of the coronavirus.

The September fight likely would take place behind closed doors, which reportedly is OK with both fighters.

Arum, who promotes both of them, said they want to fight before the end of the year.

“In talking with Lomachenko and Lopez, neither of them want an interim fight,” Arum said. “So we would plan to do that in September, with or without an audience.”

Added Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s manager: “Nothing matters. As long as Lopez is coming in the ring with Lomachenko.”

Arum has said Lomachenko-Lopez would be a pay-per-view event because of its magnitude.

Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) last fought last October, when he defeated Luke Campbell by a unanimous decision. Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs) is coming off his biggest victory, a second-round knockout of Richard Commey that earned him one of the 135-pound titles in December.

Fury-Wilder in Macau? Lomachenko-Lopez in Las Vegas stadium? It’s all on table

Bob Arum is considering a variety of sites in an effort to have his biggest stars fight in front of live audiences.

Bob Arum spends a lot of times these days trying to figure out when and where his biggest stars will fight amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Highly paid figures like Tyson Fury, who Arum co-promotes, and Vasiliy Lomachenko aren’t likely to fight in empty arenas because of the money generated by live gates would have to sacrificed.

That means Arum and the promoters of other stars must find venues where they can fight in front of spectators or wait until they can.

For Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III, Arum said possible sites are Macau, China, Australia or the new NFL stadium in Las Vegas. For Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez, the Raiders new home – Allegiant Stadium – is a potential venue.

The idea behind staging these fights in stadiums is that a relatively small number of spectators can be spaced out for safety reasons.

Arum has done business with authorities in Macau, which is known for its casinos and is not under the same restrictions. Manny Pacquiao and Lomachenko have fought there.

“When we postponed the fight in July we punted it to October,” Arum told Sky Sports. “I then called Fury and told him to forget about October. We’ll try to do it in November or December. We are moving ahead.

“Maybe Macau which needs to attract customers and has tremendous protocols. They have had, for months now, no cases of coronavirus. There are six big casino properties in Macau. We’ve talked to them.

“They’re ready to put up money for the Fury fight against Wilder in November or December. We are waiting to see if the authorities in Macau will allow an event with full spectators in November or December.”

Australia or the Las Vegas stadium remain options. Pacquiao, then promoted by Arum, fought Jeff Horn in Brisbane.

“Our friends in Australia are talking about doing this fight, probably in Sydney. That’s a possibility,” Arum said. “… “Maybe we can do it with a full attendance at the new stadium in Vegas of the Raiders. Maybe we could do it with 20,000 or 30,000 people.

“… I can’t tell you where, but I’m pretty sure we’ll get this event on in November or December. We’re not sleeping. We’re working hard to get it done.”

Meanwhile, Arum is targeting September for the Lomachenko-Lopez lightweight title-unification fight.

He hopes restrictions will ease to a point where a limited number of fans will be allowed to attend such events.

“A big fight, we’re hoping to do it in September with a limited audience,” Arum told Sky Sports. “We’re talking to the new American football team, the Las Vegas Raiders, who have a beautiful new $1.8 billion stadium.

“They’re talking to us about doing this fight in their stadium in September for maybe 10,000 people spread out. Everybody is working to get these things done. We can’t talk definitely until we have satisfied all the regulatory bodies.

“The Nevada commission is way ahead of everybody in terms of moving forwards.”

Top Rank is the first U.S. promotional company to bring boxing back. It’s first card – without spectators – is scheduled for Tuesday (June 9) in Las Vegas.

Vasiliy Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez plan to fight one another in fall

Vasiliy Lomachenko plans to fight Teofimo Lopez in a lightweight title-unification bout in the fall on pay-per-view.

To hell with easy fights.

First Errol Spence Jr. decided to defend his welterweight title against Danny Garcia in the fall even though he was in a horrific car accident in October. Now, according to ESPN, Vasiliy Lomachenko plans to fight Teofimo Lopez in a lightweight title-unification bout in the fall on pay-per-view.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum spoke with ESPN after talking to the handlers of both fighters.

“In talking with Lomachenko and Lopez, neither of them want an interim fight,” Arum said. “So we would plan to do that in September, with or without an audience.”

Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s manager, confirmed that his fighter wants Lopez and will do it without spectators if the coronavirus threat requires it.

“Nothing matters, as long as Lopez is coming in the ring with Lomachenko,” Klimas told ESPN.

Teofimo Lopez Sr., the fighter’s father, evidently feels the same way.

“One-hundred percent,” the elder Lopez said. “We don’t need no tune-ups. We are focused with Lomachenko. That’s all we want … Lomachenko.”

Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) is Boxing Junkie’s No. 1 fighter pound-for-pound. The supremely gifted two-time Olympic champion has won major titles in three divisions in only 15 fights.

The 32-year-old Ukrainian is coming off a one-sided decision over Luke Campbell in August, his third defense of the 135-pound title he won by stopping Jorge Linares in May 2018.

Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs) is an honorable mention on Boxing Junkie’s pound-for-pound list even though he’s only 22. The slick, big-punching Honduran-American won his first major title when he stopped Richard Commey in two rounds in December.

Lomachenko and Lopez were in discussions earlier this year to fight on May 30 at Madison Square Garden in New York City but those plans were put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic.
