Ex-Falcons QB Logan Woodside signs with Cincinnati Bengals

Ex-Falcons quarterback Logan Woodside has signed with the Cincinnati Bengals

The Atlanta Falcons signed quarterback Matt Ryan to a one-year deal on Monday, allowing him to retire with the team that drafted him 16 years ago. In other Falcons quarterback news, Logan Woodside signed a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday.

Woodside, 29, signed with the team in 2022 before serving as Atlanta’s emergency third QB last season. He appeared in just two games but never threw a pass in the regular season. Woodside, a seventh-round pick by the Bengals back in 2018, now returns to the team that drafted him.

The Falcons are expected to add a quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft to serve as a developmental option behind Kirk Cousins and Taylor Heinicke. Last year’s starter, Desmond Ridder, was traded from the Falcons to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for wide receiver Rondale Moore.

Atlanta has the No. 8 pick in this week’s draft and while we don’t expect the team to take a QB in Round 1, it’s impossible to rule out. The Falcons sent a group to watch Washington QB Michael Penix. work out in Seattle. Plus, the team met with Spencer Rattler, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy.

The 2024 NFL draft kicks off on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.

Logan Woodside will serve as Falcons QB2 if Heinicke is out

Logan Woodside will serve as the Falcons backup QB if Taylor Heinicke can’t play in Week 12

On Monday, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith declared Desmond Ridder as the team’s starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.

Ridder will replace Taylor Heinicke, who started Atlanta’s previous two games before injuring his hamstring in the fourth quarter against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10. While Ridder will officially get his job back, Heinicke may not return to his backup role just yet.

According to Smith, Heinicke has not fully recovered from his hamstring injury and is considered day-to-day going into Week 12. If Heinicke can’t play on Sunday, the Falcons will look to third-string quarterback Logan Woodside to back up Ridder.

Woodside has been inactive for all 10 games this season, but that’s mostly due to the NFL’s emergency third quarterback rule that was implemented over the offseason.

This rule gives teams the option of playing an inactive quarterback if both active quarterbacks on the roster get injured during a game. Woodside, 28, played in the preseason for Atlanta.

Despite his lack of regular-season experience (one career completion), Woodside can operate Smith’s system. We’ll have to wait until the team’s Wednesday injury report to learn Heinicke’s official injury status.

Falcons signs QB Logan Woodside off Titans’ practice squad

Logan Woodside will reunite with his former offensive coordinator in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Falcons continued their apparent fascination with acquiring as many Tennessee Titans castoffs as possible.

Quarterback Logan Woodside is the latest to reunite with former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith down in Atlanta after officially being signed to the Falcons’ 53-man roster off the Titans’ practice squad.

Woodside and Smith’s time in Tennessee overlapped together from 2018-2020, where the former San Antonio Commanders quarterback completed the only regular season pass of his career back in 2020.

However, that completion did occur on a special teams trick play rather than an offensive snap. Nevertheless, Smith clearly saw enough during their time together to warrant a reunion.

Over his career, the Toledo product has attempted three passes, completing one for seven yards, along with 13 rush attempts for a total of four yards.

The former AAF quarterback lost out on the backup job to rookie quarterback Malik Willis, who was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. He was brought back on the practice squad after final cuts.

Woodside now joins a quarterback room in Atlanta that also includes rookie Desmond Ridder, and former Titans signal-caller, Marcus Mariota.

Falcons sign QB Logan Woodside off of Titans’ practice squad

The #Falcons have signed QB Logan Woodside off of the #Titans practice squad

The Atlanta Falcons have yet to officially announce rookie Desmond Ridder as the starting quarterback, but the team added another QB to the 53-man roster on Saturday.

As reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, the Falcons signed veteran quarterback Logan Woodside off of the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad.

Woodside, 27, was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2018 draft out of Toledo. He has appeared in 11 games over the last two seasons for the Titans, but he has yet to make his first NFL start. For his career, Woodside has completed 1-of-3 passes for seven yards.

Woodside’s signing is a bit of a surprise, and you have to wonder how it coincides with the recent reports of Ridder taking over as Atlanta’s starting quarterback. The team has customarily dressed two quarterbacks this season, although TE Feleipe Franks is also a former QB.

In a corresponding move, the Falcons waived linebacker Nate Landman. The team takes on the New Orleans Saints in Week 15 coming off of a bye.

Titans elevate Logan Woodside, Larrell Murchison for Week 9

The Titans are elevating two players from the practice squad for Week 9.

The Tennessee Titans announced a pair of practice squad elevations for the Week 9 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team will elevate quarterback Logan Woodside and defensive lineman Larrell Murchison for the contest. This is the second straight week both players have been elevated.

Woodside served as Malik Willis’ backup in Week 8 against the Houston Texans when Ryan Tannehill was ruled out, and he’ll serve in the same role should Tannehill not play in Week 9.

The latest report on Tannehill is that he’s trying all he can to suit up, but his status remains up in the air, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

A 2020 fifth-round pick, Murchison played seven snaps in Week 8 and was fairly effective, tallying the third-highest Pro Football Focus grade on defense and notching one pressure.

The Titans (5-2) and Chiefs (5-2) will meet at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 9 on “Sunday Night Football”, with kickoff set for 8:20 p.m. EDT.

Nine recently cut or waived players the Philadelphia Eagles should consider adding

The Eagles trimmed their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday, and as the team builds a practice squad, GM Howie Roseman could look to add more talent and personnel.

With Philadelphia focusing on the Lions, the team will likely have a few waiver wire targets that could land on the practice squad or replace a bubble player already on the roster.

With waiver claims starting at noon, here are nine recently cut players the Eagles should consider signing.

Titans’ Malik Willis wins backup QB competition over Logan Woodside

The Titans cut Logan Woodside on Tuesday, paving the way for Malik Willis to be Tennessee’s backup QB.

When the Tennessee Titans drafted quarterback Malik Willis in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft, it was understood he wouldn’t take over the starting job for at least a year.

We also assumed he would likely serve as Tennessee’s No. 3 quarterback behind Ryan Tannehill and Logan Woodside.

However, the rookie is a bit ahead of our projected schedule, as the Titans parted ways with Woodside as one of their 53-man roster cuts, leaving Tannehill and Willis as the only quarterbacks on the roster.

As far as his competition with Woodside is concerned, Willis won it easily. It was quite clear that — even at this early stage in his career — the rookie gave Tennessee a better chance to win and deserved the job.

The Liberty product flashed his impressive skill set on several occasions and looked better and better as the weeks progressed. Making his performances more impressive was the fact that his pass protection was awful.

Willis’ preseason culminated with his best showing in the finale, where he completed 15-of-23 passes for 131 yards and a score to one interception, while also adding 79 rushing yards.

Now, it’s possible the Titans add a veteran backup before the start of the season, which could push Willis to No. 3, but as of right now he’s one Tannehill injury away from seeing the field in a regular season game.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel explains why Malik Willis is getting more reps than Logan Woodside

Vrabel was unsure if Willis or Woodside would start in preseason Week 2 against the Bucs.

Tennessee Titans quarterbacks Malik Willis and Logan Woodside continue to battle for the No. 2 job in training camp behind starter Ryan Tannehill, but there has been a very noticeable difference in the distribution of reps of late.

As multiple beat writers noted during Thursday’s practice, Willis has been getting more looks than Woodside over the course of the two-day joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Of course, one could jump to conclusions and think that means Willis has passed Woodside and is in line for the No. 2 job, but according to head coach Mike Vrabel, the team has a different reason for the decision.

“I just think we have to continue to develop Malik in the system,” Vrabel said, per John Glennon of Sports Illustrated. “We’ve had conversations with Logan about his opportunity to compete. But I also feel like we have to see how quickly we can bring Malik along.”

When asked who would start in preseason Week 2 against the Bucs after Willis started over Woodside in Week 1, Vrabel wasn’t sure.

While we’re not going to write Woodside’s obituary in terms of making the cut just yet, this is an admission on the Titans’ part that they already know what they have in Woodside, which isn’t much.

With that being the case, it just makes sense to give Willis, who could be the future of the franchise, more of Woodside’s reps in order to see how far along they can bring him ahead of his first season.

Adding to that, perhaps Willis can show the Titans enough to allow the team to trust him as the No. 2 quarterback, something that would make Woodside expendable and open up a roster spot for another position.

After a strong showing in his preseason debut last week, Willis will look to build on that on Saturday night in Nashville.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel evaluates QB performances from preseason Week 1

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel shared his thoughts on the preseason Week 1 performances of QBs Malik Willis and Logan Woodside.

One of the bigger headlines coming out of the Tennessee Titans’ preseason opener on Thursday night was the performance of the team’s respective backup quarterbacks, Logan Woodside and Malik Willis.

For Malik Willis, it was about as good of a performance as the Titans could have hoped for. Sure, there were mistakes, but the rookie flashed his impressive arm and athleticism throughout.

Willis completed 6-of-11 passes for 107 yards, while also adding five carries for 38 yards and a touchdown. Tennessee scored twice (touchdown and field goal) with Willis under center.

And then it was Woodside’s turn. The veteran quarterback failed to put points on the board despite completing 14-of-24 passes for 102 yards. To make matters worse, he tossed a pair of interceptions.

All in all, it was a major victory for Willis, who shined over his competition for the No. 2 quarterback job. However, as Vrabel rightly notes, there is still work to be done.

“These are great opportunities,” Vrabel said of Willis, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. “There’s a fine line in standing in there and climbing the pocket and using some of those drills that they are working every single day, and being able to progress through, and then there’s times where we are going to want him to go and be an athlete.

“There’s some things we have to work on certainly with the timing and what he is seeing when those throws depend on it, and then there’s other times I thought he really made some nice plays down the field and kept his eyes down the field.”

One of Woodside’s two interceptions was on a target to wide receiver Terry Godwin. Vrabel spread the blame around on that one and didn’t put it all on Woodside.

“There’s a of lot people who have to be better on that particular play,” Vrabel said of Woodside’s interception. “It starts with the decision. If you go over there and don’t like it, then just try and check the ball down. But the receiver, we don’t want him to release inside and then we just make a decision and try and compete and do everything we can to not get that ball intercepted.”

Despite the struggles Woodside saw in his first preseason game of 2022, Vrabel believes he’ll turn it around.

“One of the strengths that Logan has had has been his command of the offense, and his decisions,” Vrabel said. “And I would anticipate that is going to improve from what it was [Thursday] night.”

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Woodside over the past few years, it’s to never count him out in a backup quarterback competition. However, he’s also never had the kind of competition Willis is providing right now.

After one preseason game, it’s clear the rookie is the superior player in more ways than one, and that could force Tennessee to abandon keeping Woodside as the buffer between Willis and the field in 2022.

Woodside will have his next opportunity to right the ship in a preseason Week 2 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 20.

Titans’ Malik Willis has top 5 Madden NFL 23 ratings in speed, throw power

Check out how Tennessee’s other two quarterbacks fared, also.

On Friday, Madden NFL 23 revealed its ratings for quarterbacks, and in them Tennessee Titans 2022 third-round pick Malik Willis ended up as one of the fastest quarterbacks in the game.

Willis’ speed rating comes in at a 92, tying him with the Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray for the second-highest mark at the quarterback position. As you’d expect, the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson (96) is the fastest.

The rating is accurate after Willis was an absolute menace on the ground in college thanks to his game-breaking speed. The Liberty product tallied 1,822 yards and 27 touchdowns in his last two years in college.

As far as overall rating is concerned, Willis comes in at a 69, which isn’t much of a surprise considering he’s a rookie. However, that rating is actually good enough for the second-best among rookie quarterbacks, falling behind only the Atlanta Falcons’ Desmond Ridder.

Willis is also getting some love in the throw power department, as his 94 is tied for the fifth-best mark. Meanwhile, Ryan Tannehill didn’t fare too bad with his rating that ranks tied for the 13th-highest in the game.

Now, here’s a look at how all three of Tennessee’s quarterbacks fared with their overall ratings in Madden NFL 23, as well as the top 10 players in different ratings.
