The Detroit Lions pulled off a prime-time comeback for the ages on Sunday night. After falling behind the Houston Texans inside NRG Stadium by a 23-7 halftime score, the Lions stopped making so many mistakes and turned it around.

The Lions capped off the improbable road win over the AFC South-leading Texans when first-year kicker Jake Bates snuck a 52-yard field goal just inside the left upright, giving the Lions a 26-23 win.

The Detroit Lions were playing one of their worst games of the last two-plus seasons on Sunday night. Thanks to some self-inflicted wounds, poor execution from the offense and facing a good opponent in Houston, the Lions trailed the Texans 23-7 at the half.

And then it happened. Fueled by two interceptions from cornerback Carlton Davis and the offense awakening and adjusting to the Texans speedy, playmaking defense, Detroit pulled off the mother of all comebacks.

How rare was the Lions comeback? Consider this tidbit from The 33rd Team:

The Lions became the first team since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 to overcome a deficit of at least 15 points while throwing five or more interceptions.

No team has ever shot itself in the feet so badly and still come back to win a game, not since at least five years before Dan Campbell or Brad Holmes were even born.

Analysis: Texans allow double-digit comeback in home loss against Lions

The Houston Texans were on the wrong side of history following Sunday’s loss against the Detroit Lions.

Stunned.

Shocked.

Sadly, not surprised.

Even after forcing five interceptions against Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, the Houston Texans couldn’t get out of their way in the second half.

They allowed a 19-0 swing capped off with a 52-yard field goal from Jake Bates to help Detroit secure a 26-23 walk-off comeback.

The Texans, which ended their undefeated streak at home, have lost three of their last five and haven’t scored in the second half since Week 6’s win over the New England Patriots.

Goff, who likely lost his claim in the MVP race, won the game. That’s all that matters in the end since Detroit remains a game ahead of Minnesota, Washington and Philadelphia in the NFC standings.

The former No. 1 overall pick struggled from the get-go, as his opening drive resulted in a Jimmie Ward interception. Three drives later, another pass was batted at the line of scrimmage, only this one leading to a Henry To’oTo’o interception.

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud didn’t miss for the first 30 minutes. After connecting with Tank Dell and John Metchie III for first-down gains, Joe Mixon secured the 7-0 lead with an 8-yard touchdown run.

Stroud later found Metchie for a 15-yard score, the first of the former second-round pick’s career. Ka’imi Fairbairn drilled three kicks, helping Houston secure a 23-7 halftime lead.

That was the final positive of the night from Houston’s offense, but Detroit was getting started. It took two more interceptions from Goff to finally get on the same page, but the Lions’ defense returned the favor.

Stroud was picked off on the opening play of the third quarter. After Goff returned the favor, he eventually led the Lions downfield on a three-play drive capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run from David Montgomery.

Stroud, who finished with 232 passing yards and a touchdown, tossed his second interception to Carlton Davis III on an intended touchdown pass to Tank Dell.

The Lions responded two drives later with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Bates, who previously played for the Texans, drilled a 58-yard field goal with 5:01 remaining.

Fairbairn could have sealed the game with a 59-yard attempt, but the kick went wide left, giving the Lions the ball at midfield. Goff found St. Brown for an 11-yard gain, forcing the Texans to burn their final timeout while setting up Bates’ field goal.

Goff’s five picks were the most by an NFL player since fellow former No.1 overall pick Jameis Winston, who threw five on Oct. 13, 2019, against Carolina while with Tampa Bay.

He finished with 240 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Stroud’s two interceptions mark the second multi-turnover game of the season and third in his career.

Rookie cornerback Kamari Laisster, who left with a concussion in the third quarter, recorded two interceptions. Fellow rookie defensive back Calen Bullock extended his team-leading turnover total to four with a pick in the third quarter.

Metchie led the Texans with five catches for 74 yards. Mixon finished with 46 yards on 25 carries.

Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 71 yards, while tight end Sam LaPorta led Detroit with three catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

The Texans, who had 10 days to prepare for Week 10’s matchup at home, will have eight days to reassess and regroup before traveling to AT&T Stadium to take on the Dallas Cowboys.

The Detroit Lions are 8-1 and alone in first place atop the entire NFC. For about 58 minutes of Sunday night’s game against the Texans in Houston, it sure looked like the Lions were headed for a second loss.

Not this team. Not Dan Campbell’s gritty Lions.

Despite five interceptions from Jared Goff, some really shaky offensive line play much of the night and falling into a 23-7 halftime hole, the Lions pulled off a comeback for the ages. First-year kicker Jake Bates squeezed a 52-yard field goal about six inches inside the left upright as time expired to lift the Lions to a 26-23 win.

The Lions overcame so much in this one, with many of those obstacles being self-imposed. Goff was uncharacteristically off all night, not just on the interceptions. The run game did nothing for the first three quarters, a combination of poor blocking and designs that the Texans defense was more than ready to defend. There were costly penalties on both sides of the ball.

Aaron Glenn’s undermanned defense played strong enough to keep the struggling offense within striking distance. Carlton Davis intercepted C.J. Stroud twice in the second half, the second one in the end zone with an incredible effort that prevented a sure-fire touchdown.

Detroit’s defense shut out Houston in the second half. The Lions offense got one last chance to win after Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn missed badly from 58 yards. Bates had just made a close-shave inside the right upright from 56 to tie it up. Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown picked up enough yards to get Bates in range, and the Houston-area native delivered.

It was a thrilling comeback for the Lions, one that left the NBC broadcast crew stunned. The grit to pull this one off, on the road against the AFC South-leading Texans in prime time, is the sort of victory that will earn these Lions more “team of destiny” type of talk.

Kamari Lassiter injury update: Will Texans CB return vs. Lions?

Kamari Lassiter will not return for the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football.

The Houston Texans had Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff in a blender of concerns to close out the first half, but one of the top defenders left early in Week 10.

The team’s No. 2, Kamari Lassiter, suffered left the third quarter against the NFC North favorites with a head injury and did not return. The Lions have gained momentum with the former Georgia star sidelined.

Here’s what to know about Lassiter’s injury and his status for the rest of the Week 10 game and beyond.

Lassiter left with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter after running into defensive back Jimmie Ward when trying to make a tackle. While it looked as if he was holding his shoulder while walking into the blue medical teat.

When exiting the tent, the second-round pick was holding his head and headed to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion.

The Texans ruled him out early in the fourth quarter for a concussion. Lassiter now must enter concussion protocol before he can return.

Who is Kamari Lassiter’s backup on Texans depth chart?

Cornerback remains one of the weakest positions of depth, espeically considering that Jeff Okudah was ruled out before the game and the Texans released D’Angelo Ross earlier this week.

Derek Stingley Jr. has commanded one side of the field, but Houston called upon Ka’Dar Hollmon as the new No. 2. Behind him, Houston has M.J. Stewart and Kris Boyd, but both are more known for their skills on speical teams.

Lassiter exited Sunday’s contest with one tackle, a pass breakup and two interceptions, including one to close out the first half. For the season, Lassiter has totaled seven pass deflections and three interceptions.

Jared Goff has been outstanding throughout the 2024 season. The Lions quarterback was deservedly a prime candidate for the NFL MVP through the first nine weeks of the season.

Week 10, alas, was not Goff’s night. In the first three quarters against the Houston Texans, Goff threw five interceptions. He had thrown just four in the first eight games and none since Week 3.

Not all of the picks were his fault, and the third was an end-of-half Hail Mary that was inconsequential. That didn’t stop the internet from having some fun at Goff’s expense. Note that at this time of the game, Goff was 9-for-23 with 5 INTs…

Jared Goff has more turnovers against the Houston Texans than a bakery off Main Street during the Saturday morning rush.

Yell stop if you’ve heard this before: Jared Goff threw an interception.

No, not that one. Or that one.

Remember the one he threw before halftime against the Houston Texans? That’s not the one worth talking about.

Goff was picked off by the Texans for the fifth time and his second in as many drives to begin the third quarter, this one landing in the arms of rookie safety Calen Bullock.

The Texans still lead by 10, but C.J. Stroud hasn’t been perfect, either. Over his previous two drives, both have ended in interceptions by Carlton Davis III.

Over the past seven drives, one has ended with a punt. Another ended with a David Montgomery touchdown run.

The other five? Interceptions.

Goff has now surpasses his season total in picks and recorded a new career-high in a game. A sixth could be in the works, too.

After suffering a torn ACL, undergoing cancer treatment and fighting his way onto the roster in Year 3, John Metchie III scored a touchdown.

The last time John Metchie III scored a touchdown during the regular season came on Dec. 4, 2021.

That was his senior season and final game at the University of Alabama.

Plenty has happened for the Houston Texans‘ third-year receiver since he crossed the goal line in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia.

He tore his ACL the following quarter down in Atlanta and would miss the national championship while undergoing season-ending surgery.

He became a second-round draft pick for Houston and hopefully the long-term option in the slot.

He underwent a battle with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare but treatable form of cancer.

And he nearly didn’t make the active roster after back-to-back forgotten seasons as the Texans’ No. 4 receiver.

But Metchie never lost hope that he’d eventually cross into the end zone again. That moment arrived Sunday on the primetime stage against Houston’s most lethal opponent.

As the second quarter came to a close against the Detroit Lions, C.J. Stroud found Metchie for a 15-yard score to give the Texans a 23-7 entering halftime.

Houston (6-3) will receive the ball at halftime and could have a chance to extend its lead beyond the three scores.

With Nico Collins out, Metchie has been the one to step up as the top option for Stroud, hauling in four passes for 65 yards.

His first half against the Lions has actually doubled his receiving total from this season as a whole.

Metchie waited nearly 1,000 days for six points. Just like at Alabama, he was ready to break out the celebration.

The Houston Texans defense continues to slow the Detroit Lions offense and linebacker Henry To’oTo’o recorded his first interception

In a game won by defense, the Houston Texans continue to shine.

More importantly, they’re showing up against a surging Detroit Lions offense that’s averaged over 30 points per game in their past three outings.

After scoring on its previous drive, Houston recorded its second takeaway against the Lions when defensive end Denico Autry got his hands on quarterback Jared Goff and forced the ball into the air.

The ball tipped up and hung long enough for Henry To’oTo’o to secure his first interception of the season.

The Lions have not had two turnovers in a game since Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Conicidently, that marked their other lone loss of the season.

Autry, one of several free agency signings, missed the first six games of the season with a PED suspension. In the four games since he’s returned, he’s notched a quarterback hit in each outing, including a two-sack performance a week ago against the New York Jets.

Not only was that To’oTo’o’s first interception of the season, but it marked the first of his NFL career. The former Alabama started six games last year and appeared to be the team’s top backup behind Azeez Al-Shaair and Christian Harris.

With Harris sidelined, has played well in eight games. He might not be so inclined to give it back once he former Crimson Tide teammate is healthy.

No offense in the NFL has been playing better than the Detroit Lions over the past six weeks.

The Houston Texans didn’t get the memo and got off the field and set up their offense in prime field position.

Nickel defender Jalen Pitre got in the way of Lions quarterback Jared Goff, tipping his pass, which veteran safety Jimmie Ward was able to get his hands under for the opening drive interception.

Goff has thrown just 22 incompletions during Detroit’s six-game winning streak, including one interception. He’s already thrown two incompletions and an interception after one drive.

The turnover is the first caused by Ward this season, who returned to the lineup after a four-game hiatus due to a groin injury.

Houston is 3-1 this season when Ward plays, so it makes sense why the AFC South leaders love when No. 20 is out on the field making plays.
