Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams both have career days in blowout win over Jaguars

Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams both have career days in blowout win over Jaguars

It seemed like everyone was getting in on the fun in Detroit’s 52-6 blowout win Sunday over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterback Jared Goff had a perfect passer rating and both David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for touchdowns. But it was a career day for the receiver duo of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.

Both hit the century mark Sunday. St. Brown caught 11 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, Williams caught four passes for 124 yards and a score. Both hit career highs for receiving yards.

St. Brown’s previous career high was 156 yards in Detroit’s 41-38 win just over a year ago on November 12, 2023 against the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s just the second time St. Brown has reached 150 receiving yards in a game and his 18th career 100-yard game, tied for the third most in franchise history with Johnnie Morton.

Williams broke his previous career high of 121 yards, which came back in Week 1 of this season in the 26-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Those are the only two 100-yard games of Williams’ short career to date.

Aidan Hutchinson erupts for 3 sacks in the 1st quarter, sets Lions sack mark

Aidan Hutchinson erupts for 3 sacks in the 1st quarter, sets Lions sack mark for most in 4-game period

Lions EDGE Aidan Hutchinson was dominant against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1, even if the stat sheet didn’t necessarily reflect it. After logging the NFL’s best pass rush win rate in Week 1 but only netting one sack, Hutchinson quickly bolstered the stat sheet against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.

Hutchinson bagged three sacks on Bucs QB Baker Mayfield in the first quarter. No. 97 recorded a sack on each of Tampa’s three drives, two of them on third downs. The first of Hutchinson’s sacks also created a fumble that forced the Buccaneers to kick a short field goal in the red zone.

The outburst gives Hutchinson a Lions team record for sacks in a four-game stretch. Hutchinson now has nine sacks in Detroit’s last four regular-season games. No Lions player has ever done that before.

Lions polish off Vikings, tie team record for wins in a season

Detroit’s 12th win ties a team record set back in 1991, the last year the Lions won a postseason game.

The Detroit Lions successfully defended the den in the regular season finale against the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions held off the Vikings, 30-20, in the Week 18 matchup in Ford Field.

Jared Goff threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns in a mistake-free offensive performance. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs each rushed for a touchdown as well in an uneven game that saw Detroit convert just one of its nine third-down attempts.

Big plays and special teams ruled the day for Detroit, which improved to 12-5 with the win. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught a 70-yard touchdown pass, and Kalif Raymond ignited a drive with a 42-yard punt return and also chipped in with a 41-yard catch-and-run. Punter Jack Fox had a fantastic game and his coverage units were sharp, too.

The defense also made some big plays. Detroit sacked Nick Mullens four times and forced him into two fourth-quarter interceptions under heavy pressure. Aidan Hutchinson bagged two sacks and had another 12-yard tackle-for-loss, while rookie LB Jack Campbell notched a sack amongst his team-high 11 tackles.

The victory could be a costly one for Detroit. Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta and Raymond both left the game with knee injuries that could impact their availability in the wild card round next weekend.

Detroit’s 12th win ties a team record set back in 1991, the last year the Lions won a postseason game. The Vikings finish 7-10 a year after winning the NFC North.

Jared Goff pulled off positive passing mark that Matthew Stafford never did in Detroit

Goff hit a passing mark in the Broncos game that lifted him above Stafford in Lions passing records

The passing section of the Detroit Lions franchise record book is dominated by one name: Matthew Stafford. But the man traded for Stafford has etched his name into the annals by pulling off a positive passing feat Stafford never did in his 12 years in Detroit.

When Goff threw his fourth TD pass in the Lions win over the Broncos, it was his 25th on the season. Goff threw 29 touchdowns for Detroit in 2022, giving him back-to-back seasons with at least 25 TD passes. Oddly enough, Stafford never did that while with the Lions.

Even better, Goff got there in just 14 games (so far) this season. He’s got a chance to build on it.

Thanks to Ash Thompson of the Detroit Lions Podcast for shining a light on Goff’s accomplishment.

Amon-Ra St. Brown sets Lions receiving mark in Week 7 loss

St. Brown set one Lions record and matched another with his prolific game in the loss to the Ravens

There wasn’t much to be excited about with the Lions in Detroit’s 38-6 loss in Baltimore on Sunday, but one Lions player did establish a positive new team record.

Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown had a prolific day, catching 13 passes for 102 yards. When paired with last week’s 12 receptions for 124 yards in the Week 6 win over Tampa Bay, it gives St. Brown the new team record for most receptions over a two-game period.

St. Brown seized the top spot from Brett Perriman, who had 12 catches in two consecutive games back in 1995. No. 14 also matched Herman Moore’s team record of catching at least five passes for at least 50 yards in each of the first six games of the season. Moore did that back in 1997.

Lions predicted to win the NFC North division title

Connor Orr from SI predicts the entire NFL season and gives the Detroit Lions a division title and playoff berth

During the offseason, football fans and analysts enjoy predicting how each team will perform in the upcoming season. However, accurately predicting each team’s record is as challenging as navigating construction zones in Michigan. The Detroit Lions have generated a lot of excitement going into the season due to their unconventional coach in Dan Campbell and a talented roster that could potentially secure a playoff spot.

Recently, Connor Orr from SI contributed to the hype by predicting that the Lions will finish the season with an 11-6 record, win the NFC North, and secure a spot in the playoffs.

Here’s where I’ll jump in the stream of the “trendy” teams. Could the Lions realize their potential, or will they end up in the bin alongside a handful of other clubs we perpetually thought were going to turn the corner but never did? (Looking at you, Chargers since 2018.) After a bit of a gantlet (Chiefs, Seahawks) to open the season, the Lions’ schedule settles in and includes a long stretch of games against teams vulnerable to the run. This is where they could rack up some Ws.

Orr’s analysis shows that the Lions will start the season strongly with victories against two of the toughest teams in the league, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Seattle Seahawks. If the Lions can secure these wins, it will solidify their hype as a genuine playoff contender.

However, predicting divisional games is trickier. Orr predicts that the Lions will finish with a 3-3 record within the division, winning all their home games but losing on the road. It is unclear how the other teams in the division will perform this season. Will the Green Bay Packers succeed without Aaron Rodgers? Can Justin Fields elevate the Chicago Bears? Will the Minnesota Vikings continue to be a dark horse?

It’s exciting to speculate on how others view your favorite team. Orr’s predictions are favorable for the Lions, but it’s important to remember that anything can happen during the season. Fans shouldn’t rely too heavily on these predictions as they are not gospel. If the Lions do follow Orr’s predictions, it will undoubtedly be an electric season for fans at Ford Field.

How teams that finished 9-8 in 2021 fared in 2022

The Lions finished 9-8 in 2022. What does history say happens next?

The Detroit Lions rallied furiously from a 1-6 start in 2022 to finish 9-8. Now the world awaits what they can do in the follow-up season.

There isn’t a lot of historical data to pore over to research how teams that finished 9-8 did the following season. The 2022 campaign was just the second with 17 games after decades of NFL teams only playing 16 per season.

Here’s a look at how the teams who went 9-8 in 2021, the first season of 17 games, wound up performing in the 17 games of 2022, as well as how they built to the 9-8 from the 2020 year.

James Houston keeps setting records as a Lions rookie

Sixth-round EDGE James Houston set a few marks with his sack of Jets QB Zach Wilson in Sunday’s win

When Lions rookie EDGE James Houston brought down Jets QB Zach Wilson in the first quarter of Sunday’s 20-17 Detroit win, the speedy pass rusher made his mark in the record books.

Houston joined some pretty impressive company in registering a sack in each of his first four games. Only two other players have done that since sacks became an official stat in 1982: Terrell Suggs and Santana Dotson. Suggs won the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2003 with 12 sacks, while Dotson finished second in 1992 with 10 sacks.

No. 59 became the first Lion rookie to ever record a sack in four straight games. It ties the longest sack streak in team history, too. With five sacks in his first four games, Houston also set the franchise mark for most sacks in the first four games.

Not bad for a sixth-round draft pick who was stuck on the team’s practice squad through the first 10 weeks!

Jamaal Williams sets Lions rushing TD record thru seven games

Williams passed Barry Sanders and Billy Sims in the Lions record book

Anytime you break Lions team records set by Billy Sims and Barry Sanders, it’s quite an accomplishment. That’s what Detroit RB Jamaal Williams did on Sunday.

When Williams scored on a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter, his second of the afternoon, it marked his eighth rushing touchdown of the season. That is one better than Sims posted back in 1980 and Sanders matched a decade later in 1991.

Williams has now scored two rushing TDs in four different games over the first seven, also a team record.

T.J. Hockenson: Breaking down his record-setting day in Week 4

Lions TE T.J. Hockenson set a few team and NFL marks in his outstanding Week 4 game against the Seahawks

It gets overshadowed by the Lions’ inept defensive effort, but Detroit tight end T.J. Hockenson had one of the greatest individual games for a TE in NFL history.

Hockenson hauled in eight receptions for 179 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion in Detroit’s 48-45 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4. Those career-high numbers set a few historical marks.

The 179 receiving yards broke the Lions team record for a tight end in a game, a record that had stood since Jim Gibbons had 161 back in December of 1964. Hockenson’s previous career mark came in his very first NFL game back in 2019 when he went for 131 yards on six catches. Hockenson had not topped 100 receiving yards in a game since that debut until Week 4.

In the process of shattering the team record and his personal best, Hockenson also wrote his name into the NFL history books. Hockenson is the first TE to ever net 175 receiving yards, two TDs and a two-point conversion in the same game. Only two other players have ever done it: Isaac Bruce in 1995 and Roddy White in 2010.

Hockenson also became just the 10th tight end to ever top 175 yards and two TDs in a game. The NFL record is held by Shannon Sharpe, who caught 12 passes for 214 yards and two TDs back in 2002.

His team came up short on the day, but Hockenson still had an incredible game for the Lions in Week 4.
