Watch: The Lions explode out to a 14-0 lead on the Panthers with big plays from offense and defense

It did not take long for the Detroit Lions to assert themselves on Sunday. The Lions erupted out to a quick 14-0 lead with a few highlight-reel plays.

Let’s go!

First up, the Lions capped a 3-play, 81-yard drive with a smashing 42-yard run by David Montgomery.

Note the blocking from WRs Jameson Williams (No. 9) and Marvin Jones (No. 0) down the field to help spring Montgomery.

Aidan Hutchinson quickly ended Carolina’s ensuing drive. This is not a normal human play from No. 97:

It didn’t take long for Sam LaPorta to cash in the takeaway. Jared Goff sells the play-fake expertly and LaPorta sneaks into the front corner of the end zone to put the Lions up 14-0.

The fake was so good it caught the FOX cameraman!

What a fun first quarter in Ford Field…

Watch: The Lions pull off a perfect flea-flicker for a TD against the Seahawks

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson dialed up Queen in his playbook in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

“Flick of the Wrist”

The Lions capitalized on Seahawks rookie CB Devon Witherspoon, who bit hard on the play-fake and was nowhere near Kalif Raymond when the Lions wideout hauled in the 36-yard touchdown.

“Don’t look back
Don’t look back
It’s a rip-off”

Witherspoon apparently didn’t study his Bruan May or Freddie Mercury in preparation for facing Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and the Detroit Lions.

“Baby you’ve been h-a-d”

Touchdown Lions! Detroit made the conversion and took a 14-7 lead with the masterful song and dance flea-flicker.

Watch: Lions DB Brian Branch scores a TD in his NFL debut

Lions DB Brian Branch scores a TD in his NFL debut with a pick-six off Patrick Mahomes

Lions rookie defensive back Brian Branch had himself one heck of a “welcome to the NFL” moment. The second-round rookie from Alabama scored on a pick-six in the third quarter of Detroit’s opener in Kansas City.

It could not have come at a better time for the Lions. Trailing 14-7, Branch reached back behind him to snatch a deflected pass that went off the hands of Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney. Branch secured the tip-drill INT and motored 50 yards into the end zone for the game-tying score.

Getting a pick-six off Patrick Mahomes is quite a way to make a splash in his first NFL game!

Watch: Rookie CB Steven Gilmore comes down with an excellent INT

Lions UDFA CB Steven Gilmore comes down with an excellent INT with an assist from Tracy Walker

There wasn’t much in the way of Detroit Lions highlights in the first quarter of Saturday’s preseason contest with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Undrafted rookie cornerback Steven Gilmore made sure the Lions had a fun won, however.

Gilmore, starting on the outside as the Lions rested all the regular starters, made an impressive interception off a savvy deflection from safety Tracy Walker. C.J. Beathard’s throw was initially set to be picked off by Walker, who ranged over the top beautifully.

Jaguars wideout Kevin Austin made a nice play to prevent Walker from cleanly catching it, but Gilmore was right there to clean up the play and make the takeaway.

Gilmore had a nice end zone pass breakup on the prior series too, nicely recovering after getting beaten on a long pass play on the same drive.

Watch: Kalif Raymond gets the Lions on the board with a brilliant punt return TD

The Detroit Lions struck first in Sunday’s matchup with the Jets in New York. But it wasn’t Jared Goff and the offense putting a dent on the scoreboard.

Return man Kalif Raymond took the Jets’ punt after the first drive to the house for a touchdown. After the Lions defense forced a quick 3-and-out with the ball pinned deep in Jets territory, Raymond fielded Braden Mann’s punt cleanly and accelerated past the entire Jets team into the end zone from 47 yards out.

Special credit to LB Josh Woods for an exceptional downfield block on Raymond’s return.

Watch: Lions rookies Kerby Joseph and Aidan Hutchinson pick off Aaron Rodgers in the end zone

Joseph and Hutchinson each picked of Aaron Rodgers in the end zone in the first half of Week 9

It took some unusual happenstance, but Lions rookie safety Kerby Joseph finally has his elusive first career interception.

Joseph has had his hands on a few passes but was unable to secure the pick through the first few weeks. That changed on Sunday thanks to Aaron Rodgers throwing the ball off Lions LB Derrick Barnes’ helmet.

Joseph, a high school volleyball standout, leapt up and snagged the jump ball in the end zone.

The Lions weren’t done picking off Rodgers in the end zone, however. On Green Bay’s next possession, rookie Aidan Hutchinson got his first career interception.

Check out this fantastic read from the rookie on a deceptive play by the Packers, and Hutchinson finishes with the ball.

Lions highlight: T.J. Hockenson rumbles for 81 yards

Lions highlight: T.J. Hockenson rumbles for 81 yards against the Seattle Seahawks on the last play of the 3rd quarter

It hasn’t been a game with many highlights for the Detroit Lions, but T.J. Hockenson gave the Ford Field fans something to cheer about.

On the final play of the thrid quarter against the Seattle Seahawks, Lions QB Jared Goff hooked up with Hockenson for an 81-yard catch and run that set up the Lions deep in Seattle’s red zone.

Two plays later, Goff found Josh Reynolds for a touchdown pass. Hockneson hauled in the 2-pt. conversion to cut the Seattle lead to 38-31 early in the fourth quarter. Hockenson’s run after the catch was truly outstanding,

At that point in the game, Hockenson had four catches for 126 yards and an earlier touchdown.

Watch: Lions extend TD streak to 16 straight quarters

Watch: Lions extend touchdown streak to 16 straight quarters on Jamaal Williams’ 2-yard TD run

The Detroit Lions got on the scoreboard first in Minnesota in the Week 3 matchup with the Vikings. Jamaal Williams plunged into the end zone from two yards out to give the Lions the early lead.

Williams’ touchdown extended the Lions streak of scoring a touchdown in each quarter to an outstanding 16 in a row. That’s the most in the NFL.

The touchdown was set up by an aggressive call from offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and head coach Dan Campbell to go for it on 4th-and-5 from the Minnesota 32-yard line. The shallow crossing pattern to Amon-Ra St. Brown wound up gaining 30.

Both the Lions and Vikings missed field goals on their opening possessions.

Watch: Aidan Hutchinson gets his first NFL sack

Watch: Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson gets his first NFL sack

It didn’t take long for Aidan Hutchinson to answer any questions about his sackless Week 1 debut. Hutchinson took care of business on the third play for the Detroit defense against the Washington Commanders in Week 2.

Hutchinson notched his first career sack on the first defensive possession. No. 97 chased down Commanders QB Carson Wentz just behind the line of scrimmage and was officially recorded with the sack. A nice blitz call helped create the chaos for QB Carson Wentz, and Hutchinson nicely cleaned up the play for the first of what should be many NFL sacks.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft notched his first sack in front of his hometown fans, making it even sweeter.

Watch: Lions play of the game from Week 1

Watch: Lions play of the game from Week 1 features DJ Chark beating ex-Lions CB Darius Slay for a sweet TD catch

The Detroit Lions came up on the short end of a 38-35 shootout against the Philadelphia Eagles. All those points made for some fun highlights for Detroit’s offense.

There were several worthy candidates for Lions play of the game. One came on the first drive when RB D’Andre Swift broke off a 50-yard run to the left on a perfectly blocked play.

Jamaal Williams bouncing off multiple Eagles defenders and sashaying into the end zone for a short TD run is definitely another.

But the winner for the LIons highlight of the game comes from QB Jared Goff and WR DJ Chark. It wasn’t the best day for either of them, but their fourth-quarter TD connection was as pretty as it gets.

Chark went up and took the ball over Pro Bowl CB Darius Slay for the impressive TD.
