Cowboys complete in-person interview with Seahawks assistant HC Leslie Frazier

Cowboys complete in-person interview with Seahawks assistant HC Leslie Frazier

As the Seattle Seahawks seek their next offensive coordinator, the Dallas Cowboys are looking for their next head coach… and it’s possible he could come from Seattle’s staff. On Monday, the Cowboys announced via their Twitter account they had completed an in-person interview with Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier to be their next top man.

News broke last week that Dallas had requested an interview with Frazier. Clearly, Seattle granted the request and allowed Frazier to compete for a chance at leading another team.

Should the Cowboys decide to hire Frazier, it would be the second time he has been a head coach. Frazier last commanded such a position with the Minnesota Vikings when he became the interim head coach in 2010, then was retained as the permanent coach from 2011-2013.

Overall, Frazier has a 21-33-1 record (including playoffs) as a head coach. However, he would have a considerably better quarterback situation in Dallas than what he had with Christian Ponder in Minnesota.

Cowboys to interview former Vikings head coach with lengthy NFL resume

From @ToddBrock24f7: Leslie Frazier has been on staff with 8 NFL clubs and owns 2 Super Bowl rings. The Cowboys are said to be interviewing him next week.

After word circulated Wednesday that the Cowboys had an interest in speaking with former Jets skipper Robert Saleh about their top job, a second name popped up: another longtime defensive strategist with head coaching experience on his extensive résumé.

Current Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier has been requested for an interview with Dallas to take place next week, perhaps as early as Monday. That news was first reported by ESPN’s Todd Archer.

Frazier, who will turn 66 in April, began his NFL career as a cornerback for the Chicago Bears in the early 1980s and was a member of the legendary 1985 defense that led the franchise to its only Super Bowl victory.

He segued to coaching shortly after his playing days were done, launching the football program at Trinity International University of the NAIA in 1988 and winning two conference titles in nine seasons. Two years at Illinois followed as defensive backs coach before he made a jump to the NFL.

Frazier started with the Eagles as DB coach for four years, then moved to Cincinnati to be defensive coordinator for another two. A two-year stint in Indianapolis- and a Super Bowl win as the Colts’ assistant head coach- followed before he landed in Minnesota.

With the Vikings, he graduated from defensive coordinator to assistant head coach to interim head coach and then finally the official replacement for Brad Childress in 2011. Frazier held that post for three campaigns before he was eventually fired, having logged an overall mark of 21-32-1 as the team’s head coach.

Frazier moved to Tampa for two years as DC and then did a season as Baltimore’s secondary coach before making his way to Buffalo. The Bills’ DC for three seasons, he then added assistant head coach to his job title in 2020 and maintained those responsibilities until the conclusion of the 2022 season.

Frazier took a year off in 2023, to concentrate on prepping himself for what he hoped would be a head coaching opportunity somewhere.

“It’s forced me to broaden my horizons a little bit,” Frazier told CBS Sports last January as the 2024 hiring cycle began, “looking at the league from a global standpoint as opposed to just a team that I’m on and just the opponent that we’re getting prepared for. It’s forced me to see the league in its entirety and it’s helped me to get more involved in some of the angles that allow you to win.”

Frazier did make a return to the sidelines in 2024… but once again as an assistant head coach. This time it was in Seattle under new man Mike Macdonald. The Seahawks finished 10-7, good for second place in the NFC West, but they did not make the playoffs.

Though he has not held a head coaching position since 2013, Frazier has been active on the interview circuit in the years since. The Colts, Giants, Bears, Texans, and Dolphins have all had sit-downs with him.

And now Dallas.

Seahawks assistant HC Leslie Frazier to interview with Cowboys

Seahawks assistant HC Leslie Frazier to interview with Cowboys

The Seattle Seahawks could be experiencing further changes to their coaching staff. They are already in the market for a new offensive coordinator after firing Ryan Grubb, and have lost another assistant coach in Zak Hill who rejoined the Boise State Broncos as their offensive coordinator. Now it seems they could potentially lose a much higher ranking coach than Hill or Grubb.

On Wednesday it was announced the Dallas Cowboys have requested an interview with Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, and it appears they will get one next week.

Frazier joined Seattle’s coaching staff shortly after the team hired Mike Macdonald to be their top man. Frazier was hired to be an assistant head coach, which was the position he held with the Buffalo Bills – alongside his duties of being their defensive coordinator – from 2020-2022. He was also an assistant head coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2006, where he was apart of their Super Bowl XLI winning team.

As a veteran coach in this league, Frazier has bounced around eight different franchises as either a defensive coordinator, assistant head coach, secondary coach or any combination of the three. To date, his only time as a head coach came with the Minnesota Vikings, where he was elevated as an interim head coach in 2010 and eventually became the permanent replacement from 2011-13. During his time in Minnesota, he accumulated a record of 21-33-1, which includes one loss in the Wild Card round.

Dallas is in the market for a new head coach after failing to come to terms on a new contract with Mike McCarthy.

Selfishly, I would hope he remains with the Seahawks to help provide veteran leadership to a young and still comparatively inexperienced coaching staff. However, given his history and his own experience in this league, it is high time he was given a second shot at leading his own team.

If Seahawks lose Leslie Frazier to Cowboys, he’s served his purpose

If Seahawks lose Leslie Frazier to Cowboys, he’s served his purpose

Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier is interviewing with the Dallas Cowboys’ for their head coaching vacancy, according to multiple national reports. Frazier was extremely helpful to Mike Macdonald throughout his first season in charge. If he lands the Cowboys job, that would be an excellent development for a terrific person and coach, and Seattle could rest comfortably knowing he’s served his purpose to Macdonald.

Frazier brought a wealth of experience to the Seahawks in 2024. He previously served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills for three campaigns (2020-22), and won a Super Bowl while holding the same title with the Indianapolis Colts in 2006. Frazier was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2010 (interim) to 2013.

That experience was invaluable to a first-year coach like Macdonald. Frazier would have assisted with multiple day-to-day duties, and certainly his game-day experience in clock management and critical situations was helpful to Macdonald. Now that the first-year head coach is heading into his sophomore season, he should be considerably more comfortable and familiar with the situations that an assistant head coach is initially helpful with.

Seahawks are in good hands if Mike Macdonald misses Sunday’s Week 14 game

Seahawks are in good hands if Mike Macdonald misses Sunday’s Week 14 game

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald missed Monday’s practice leading up to Sunday’s upcoming Week 14 game versus the Arizona Cardinals. Macdonald wasn’t simply skipping practice. He had an outstanding reason. His wife went into labor with their first child!

Assistant head coach Leslie Frazier took the responsibility of meeting with local media on Monday. When asked about Macdonald’s return, Frazier delivered an unclear timeline. If Macdonald has to miss Sunday’s NFC West showdown with the Cardinals, understandably so, the Seahawks would be in excellent hands.

Frazier joined Macdonald’s staff after spending the 2023 season out of football. From 2017 to 2022, he enjoyed an excellent stint as the Buffalo Bills’ defensive coordinator. Frazier’s coaching career dates back to 1988, and he spent three campaigns as the Minnesota Vikings’ head coach from 2011 to 2013.

Frazier and Macdonald crossed paths with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2016 season. Frazier was the secondary coach and Macdonald was still cutting his teeth as a defensive assistant. When Frazier joined the Bills in 2017, Macdonald was promoted in Baltimore to defensive backs coach.

When Macdonald received the opportunity to become the Seahawks’ head coach, he wisely called on Frazier. Looking for experienced assistants to join his staff, he appointed Frazier as his assistant head coach. If Frazier has to coach Sunday’s game versus the Seahawks, expect him to field a prepared, motivated team looking to get a win in celebration of Macdonald’s life-altering event.
