UFC Fight Night 255 video: Leon Edwards, Sean Brady have first faceoff outside The O2

UFC London headliners Leon Edwards and Sean Brady had their first fight week faceoff on Tuesday.

[autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag] and [autotag]Sean Brady[/autotag] shared their first look during fight week on Tuesday with an initial faceoff ahead of the UFC Fight Night 255 main event.

After losing the welterweight title to Belal Muhammad in August, Edwards (21-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) will attempt to put himself back at the forefront of the championship conversation when he takes on rising contender Brady (17-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) in a five-round bout at The O2 in London (ESPN+).

Both men got a sneak peak at the venue they will be competing in this weekend when they came together for a staredown in front of the host venue, which was a largely cordial encounter (via X):

UFC champ Belal Muhammad: Leon Edwards has no chance to leapfrog Shavkat Rakhmonov

UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad isn’t expecting to rematch Leon Edwards anytime soon.

UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag] isn’t expecting to rematch [autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag] anytime soon.

Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) dethroned Edwards to become champion at UFC 304 and is scheduled to make his first title defense against Jack Della Maddalena in the UFC 315 headliner in Montreal.

Meanwhile, Edwards (22-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) will look to rebound when he meets Sean Brady in the UFC Fight Night 255 headliner March 22 in London. Edwards claimed that the UFC dubbed his fight with Brady as a No. 1 contender bout, which Muhammad scoffed at.

“I don’t know what Leon is thinking,” Muhammad said on the “Believe You Me” podcast. “Leon, you have a full three years before you can even think about getting a rematch. It’s going to be a long three years of fighting contenders for Leon. I would make him wait.

“I have the next guy in line anyway. I think it’s Shavkat. There’s nothing I don’t think he can do to skip Shavkat. I wouldn’t allow that to even happen with Leon. Yeah, he can go out there and throw a cartwheel kick, spinning backfist, and then I’m still going to put, ‘Lol, he still sucks.'”

Muhammad was scheduled to face Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310, but withdrew after suffering a bone infection in his foot. Rakhmonov remained on the card and defeated Ian Machado Garry in a five-round fight. But when Rakhmonov couldn’t make UFC 315 due to injury, Muhammad was booked against Della Maddalena instead.

Leon Edwards claims he offered to step in for Belal Muhammad rematch at UFC 315

Leon Edwards was hoping to get his title-fight rematch with UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad sooner than expected.

[autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag] was hoping to get his title-fight rematch with UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag] sooner than expected.

Muhammad was expecting to defend his welterweight title against Shavkat Rakhmonov May 10 at UFC 315 in Montreal, but Rakhmonov couldn’t make that date due to injury. That’s when the UFC opted to pull Jack Della Maddalena from his UFC Fight Night 255 headliner against Edwards on March 22 in London to face Muhammad.

Edwards (22-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) will now face Sean Brady instead. However, before that came together, the former champion offered to run it back with Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC).

“I heard about my replacement fight probably a couple of weeks before,” Edwards said on his YouTube channel. “I was in talks with the UFC. I was trying to step in to fight Belal, but I know that they sold London around me, so it was difficult to take me off the card and leave Jack on the card, because it would be weird to let Jack headline London. I got a new opponent, Sean Brady. It’s a style that I’m used to, a style that I’m comfortable fighting. Yes, I’m looking forward to it. It should be good.”

Edwards says he was told by the UFC that his fight with Brady (17-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) will serve as a title eliminator,

“If Belal beats him, then, like I said, the rematch is there for me as well,” Edwards said. “I spoke to the UFC. They told me that after this win, this a is No. 1 contender fight. Whoever wins this fight for the title, well, when I win this fight, I fight for the title. That is my aim. My aim is to get back that two-time world championship, and the result of the fight with me and Belal, everyone knew that fight wasn’t me.”

Muhammad, who dethroned Edwards to become champion at UFC 304, responded by laughing off Edwards’ claim.

😂😂someone tell him he got three long years ahead of him.”

Jack Della Maddalena: Leon Edwards always fights like that, can’t blame timing for Belal Muhammad title loss

Jack Della Maddalena disagrees with Leon Edwards’ claim that timing impacted his performance against Belal Muhammad.

[autotag]Jack Della Maddalena[/autotag] disagrees with [autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag]’ claim that timing impacted his performance against [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag].

Edwards (21-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) lost his welterweight title to Muhammad at UFC 304 this past July. Their main event title fight took place in the middle of the night to cater to U.S. pay-per-view time, which Edwards says had him feeling tired and lethargic.

Della Maddalena thinks Edwards is discrediting Muhammad’s (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) performance.

“In my opinion, I feel like Leon has always fought like that, so just to blame the timing, I don’t think, is fair on Belal’s part,” Della Maddalena told The MacLife. “I think Leon has shown that he’s happy sort of not do too much, use his precise striking just to sit back, and I think Belal pulled off the perfect game plan just to push the pace, grab a hold of him, make it a bit more ugly.”

Della Maddalena (17-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) meets Edwards on March 22 in the UFC Fight Night 255 headliner from The O2 in London (ESPN+). He will look to employ a similar suffocating game plan as Muhammad’s.

“That would be my plan: Put him up against the cage, build upon a pace, keep pushing the pace and try to make it ugly,” Della Maddalena said. “I think it’s a good game plan for me, and I’m going to go in there and use the blueprint to try and do what Belal did. I’m not going to try and grab ahold of Leon. I’m just going to be trying to just get in the pocket and land big shots and try to beat him down.”

The 28-year-old rising contender hasn’t competed since rallying to knock out Gilbert Burns at UFC 299 last March, and looks to pick up right where he left off.

“(I had) a bit of a layoff, start of the year, prior to a title fight, I think it’s the perfect opportunity, perfect time,” Della Maddalena said. “Fighting a former champion, five rounds, I think it’s just going to set up a big year.”

Leon Edwards eyes title shot with UFC London win, wants Belal Muhammad rematch at normal hours

Leon Edwards is eager to run things back with UFC champion Belal Muhammad not in the middle of the night.

[autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag] is eager to run things back with UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag].

After losing his title to Muhammad at UFC 304, Edwards (21-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) will look to rebound against [autotag]Jack Della Maddalena[/autotag] (17-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) on March 22 in the UFC Fight Night 255 headliner from The O2 in London (ESPN+).

With a win over the streaking Della Maddalena, Edwards thinks he can jump right back into the title picture.

“I feel like after beating Jack, definitely,” Edwards told Link Up TV of getting a title shot. “I think he’s ranked (No.) 5 or 4 in the world. In the welterweight division, as well, there aren’t many people right now that are barking for a title shot.

“I think Belal is fighting Shavkat (Rakhmonov) hopefully in April or May. After that, there’s nobody else for the title apart from me. So if I go out there March 22, put on a great performance, I can’t see why not.”

With his fight against Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) taking place in the middle of the night to cater to U.S. pay-per-view time, Edwards says he wasn’t able to perform effectively. If he gets an opportunity to rematch Muhammad, he hopes it takes place at a normal timing.

“Not fight at 5 o’clock in the morning,” Edwards said on what he’d do differently against Muhammad. “I feel like that affected my performance. I didn’t feel myself. … The sleep thing, the late hours, that made a big difference to me in that fight.”

Michael Page interested in U.K. fight vs. Leon Edwards after UFC Saudi Arabia win

Michael Page calls for a fight against former UFC champion Leon Edwards following his UFC Fight Night 250 win in Saudi Arabia.

[autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] is ready for them all, but he does have his eye on a specific fight.

Following his decision over Shara Magomedov in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 250, the flashy striker made his call for one of the biggest British fights you can make in MMA today. Page (23-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) showed his interest in fighting former UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag] in U.K. soil.

“The only one I talk about is Leon Edwards, but that’s more so at a specific location,” Page told reporters in Saudi Arabia in the post-fight press conference of UFC Fight Night 250. “It’s only for the U.K. It’s not because of him. I just think the fight would be great for my fans over in the U.K.”

For this performance, Page moved up from 170 to 185 pounds to take on Magomedov, a then undefeated striker. Although won the fight decisively despite being the underdog against a heavier and much younger fighter, “Venum” is not too happy with his showing. He’s still looking for those highlight-reel finishes that made him famous over at Bellator.

“I want to make a lot of noise and I haven’t gotten the highlight I’ve wanted – yet,” Page said. “But if I can keep getting some exciting matchups, why not (continue fighting)?”

Jack Della Maddalena was willing to fight Carlos Prates at UFC 312 before Leon Edwards booking

Jack Della Maddalena was angling for Carlos Prates before he was offered Leon Edwards.

[autotag]Jack Della Maddalena[/autotag] was angling for [autotag]Carlos Prates[/autotag] before he was offered [autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag].

Della Maddalena hasn’t competed since rallying to knock out Gilbert Burns at UFC 299 last March. Due to complications from his arm surgery, the Aussie missed out on his hometown show in Perth at UFC 305. But when the promotion announced UFC 312 Feb. 8 in Sydney, Della Maddalena wanted in.

Only issue is, Della Maddalena (17-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) couldn’t get a top-ranked fighter to face him on that card. That’s why he contemplated accepting Prates’ (21-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC) callout, before the UFC came knocking with a bigger opportunity on a different card.

“They just couldn’t get the fight,” Della Maddalena said on “The Ariel Helwani Show.” “None of the the guys in front of me wanted to really fly out to Sydney. The UFC never came to us, but me and Tim (Simpson) started floating the idea. I didn’t mind the idea of fighting Carlos Prates. I thought why not? He’s an up-and-comer.

“Gilbert gave me the opportunity. I’ve had a year off, so I was probably ready to step in and fight him. I like his style, but then the UFC, the first fight they came to me and said, ‘Do you want to fight Leon in London?’ and I just thought, ‘Yep, let’s just take the fight.’ It’s a big fight with a former champion, and it gives me an extra few weeks to ensure that the arm is strong. I had to jump on it.”

Della Maddalena meets Leon Edwards (21-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 255 headliner March 22 at The O2 in London (ESPN+). He hopes to earn a title shot with a win.

“I want to go in there and prove a point – prove a point that I could do to Leon what Belal (Muhammad) couldn’t do, and then secure the shot,” Della Maddalena said.
