Bear with head stuck in plastic drum quickly rescued in Spain

A brown bear that was found wandering through a Spanish town with its head stuck in a plastic drum has been rescued.

A brown bear that was found wandering through a Spanish town with its head stuck in a plastic drum has been rescued.

The bear was first spotted on the morning of Sept. 13 by residents of Anllares del Sil in León. Its entire head was inside the empty corn dispenser, rendering the bruin unable to see or feed.

A rescue effort coordinated by government biologists involved sedating the bear so the life-threatening device could be removed. The successful operation lasted barely more than an hour.

According to a news release issued by the Junta de Castilla y León, the bear was determined to be healthy. It’s now fitted with a GPS collar so biologists can track its movements.

MLS guaranteed a shot to defend CCL title after Union reach semifinal

Philadelphia set up an all-MLS semifinal against LAFC

It took 14 years for a MLS team to win the CONCACAF Champions League. Now, the league will have the chance to lift the trophy in back-to-back seasons.

The Philadelphia Union drew Liga MX side Atlas 2-2 in Mexico on Wednesday night, advancing to the semifinal with a 3-2 aggregate win.

That set up an all-MLS semifinal against LAFC, which easily won its all-MLS quarterfinal against the Vancouver Whitecaps by a 6-0 aggregate score.

Whichever team emerges from the rematch of last year’s epic MLS Cup will have the chance to make it two CCL wins in two years for MLS, after the Seattle Sounders made the breakthrough by defeating Pumas in last year’s final.

The winner between LAFC and the Union will likely be facing another Liga MX team in the final. Club León has already reached the other semifinal, while Tigres took a big step toward the last four with a 1-0 away win over Motagua in their quarterfinal first leg.

“The Champions League is a really special competition,” Union head coach Jim Curtin said after defeating Atlas.

“It’s the biggest trophy on our continent and we want to push and try and go for it. Let’s be honest, it’s been a competition that has been completely dominated by Liga MX. We finally broke through and Seattle had a win last year, and our hope this year is that an MLS team can lift that trophy. I’d prefer it be us than LAFC.”

Crotch-kneeing Liga MX referee gets 12-game ban

When the crime is unprecedented, it’s always interesting to see what the punishment will be

It was hard to know exactly what the punishment for Fernando Hernández’s crime would be. After all, a referee kneeing a player in the crotch is pretty much unprecedented.

But now we know: On Tuesday, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) banned Hernández 12 games for his knee to the groin of León’s Lucas Romero on Saturday night.

“Fernando Hernández Gomez, center referee of the match [Club América vs. Leon], is sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee with a 12-game suspension, for violating Article 30, paragraph g) of the FMF’s Regulation of Sanctions, by engaging in violent conduct against a player,” read a statement from the FMF.

After allowing a controversial América goal to stand, Hernández was immediately surrounded by a host of angry León players, including Romero.

With Romero getting particularly up close and personal, Hernández tried a novel strategy to get himself a little more breathing room: a swift knee to the player’s crotch.

Romero would not escape punishment either, though his was less severe: a two-game ban for “violating the principles of sportsmanship and Fair Play, through actions towards match officials,” per the FMF.

León manager Nicolas Larcamon and América manager Fernando Ortiz, who were both given red cards in the match after nearly coming to blows, were also handed two-game suspensions for violent conduct.

Liga MX referee delivers vigilante justice with knee to Leon player’s crotch

Can referees get red cards? Asking for Leon

If you want pure chaos, you go to Liga MX.

Saturday night was another memorable example, as Club América’s match against León featured the referee — you know, the guy charged with upholding the rules — catching a León player with a brutal knee to the nether regions.

It all kicked off midway through the second half with León up 1-0. Off an América corner, Diego Valdés slotted home after a scramble that appeared to include a handball from Israel Reyes in the build-up.

Much to León’s chagrin, however, the goal was given, which sparked furious protests from their players. Referee Fernando Hernández was fully surrounded, with an enraged Lucas Romero getting particularly up close and personal.

Romero may have been out of line, but nobody could’ve imagined what came next. It wasn’t initially clear in real-time but replays confirmed that Hernández delivered a swift but forceful knee straight to Romero’s crotch.

Ouch.

If there was VAR for referee misconduct, Hernández would’ve been sent off after a video review, but instead he’ll have to wait for whatever disciplinary measures are sure to follow.

This being Liga MX, the fun was hardly over. Hernández would later send off both managers who nearly came to blows, and then León’s Joel Campbell would score a stoppage-time equalizer in a 2-2 draw.

What a night. Watch the entire Romero-Hernández incident below.

Prediction

Leon 2, Pumas UNAM 1

Moneyline (ML)

LEON (-134) enters on a roll, tied for the league lead with six victories while currently sitting second in the overall Liga MX standings table. They have also won their first four league matches at Estadio Leon. On the flip side, Pumas UNAM (+290) is awfully tempting with an opportunity to nearly triple your money. However, they have managed just one point over the past nine available in the Clausura. Pumas have also won just once on the road in the current term.

If you just want to dip your toe in the betting waters, and play it safe, you can play the ‘Double Chance’ bet, with LEON OR TIE (-455), and the only way you lose your wager is if Pumas UNAM springs the upset.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-182) is a bit expensive, but we should see at least three goals in this match. In addition to the total, you can take Leon to WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE (+200), which is a rather attractive play. There is also a bet you can make — YES (-182) on both teams to score — and it doesn’t matter which team wins.
