Alontae Taylor leads the league in sacks after Week 1

Alontae Taylor’s three sacks against the Panthers is tied for the league lead with Bills defensive end Greg Rousseau:

Every team has played at least one game to start the 2024 season, and just like after Sunday’s slate, New Orleans Saints defensive back Alontae Taylor still leads the league in sacks.

He along with Buffalo Bills defensive end Greg Rousseau sits at the top of the league after sacking the quarterback three times in Week 1. Taylor is one of ten players to register multiple sacks in their season opener this week. He’s the only defensive back among the group.

Taylor displayed a quality not seen before in his professional career. He brought down Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young three times. Prior to this, Taylor had only sacked a quarterback once. Carolina’s offensive line had no answers when the nickel was sent in to blitz.

For Young’s shortcomings in his professional career, he is still a mobile quarterback. You saw that come into play on Sunday. The Saints’ typically bigger defensive lineman were eluded a few times despite generating pressure — Chase Young had at least five of them without registering a sack.

But Taylor was efficient and brought Young down for a Saints record and league-leading three sacks. We’ll see if he can keep it up as the season continues. Dennis Allen has always shown a willingness to send defensive backs into the breach for added pressure, going back to guys like Roman Harper and Kenny Vaccaro, so you have to think opposing teams will do a better job preparing for this new wrinkle in Taylor’s game sooner or later. But there’s a lot to be said for starting so hot.

Chiefs have fifth-highest score differential in NFL through Week 9

The #Chiefs hold the fifth-highest score differential in the NFL through Week 9 of the 2023 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have played outstanding football through the first nine weeks of their 2023 campaign, and hold the fifth-highest score differential in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.

This simple stat is a great way to contextualize a team’s dominance over a given set of games, and while Kansas City may not be the top team in the league by this particular metric, the Chiefs could rise to the No. 1 spot by season’s end if their offense gets into gear.

To this point, Kansas City’s defense has led the way. The unit has been one of the NFL’s best in 2023, and with just eight games remaining on their schedule, the Chiefs just have to get their offense figured out to ascend to true championship form ahead of the playoffs.

Expect Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, and Matt Nagy to do some soul-searching ahead of Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVII rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has third-most passing yards in NFL through Week 9

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has the third-most passing yards in the NFL through Week 9.

Despite having what some fans might consider a down season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes is still in third place among NFL quarterbacks for passing yardage.

Only Tua Tagovailoa and Sam Howell, of the Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders respectively, have out-gained Mahomes through the air this season.

The Texas Tech product should be expected to drop off of this list after Kansas City takes its bye week ahead of a Super Bowl LVII rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.

While third place is an outstanding position for Mahomes to be in considering his struggles this season, he will need to turn on the jets in the coming weeks to get in a position to climb the leaderboard for the top spot.

Expect Mahomes to put together some special performances heading into the home stretch of the 2023 season as he looks to win consecutive MVPs and lift the Chiefs to another Super Bowl title.

Julio Jones leads NFL in catches of 15 yards or more since 2017

Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones has been so consistent over his nine NFL seasons that his greatness occasionally gets taken for granted.

Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones has been so consistent over his nine NFL seasons that his greatness occasionally gets taken for granted. At 31 years old, Jones is still the league’s most physical big-play weapon.

Over the past three seasons, no other receiver has come close to Jones in receptions of 15 yards or more. In fact, he’s recorded 30 more than anyone else since 2017, per Pro Football Focus‘ below tweet:

In 2019, Jones had 99 catches for 1,394 yards (14.1 yards per reception), the sixth consecutive season in which he’s gone over the 1,300-yard mark.

Playing in a division full of talented receivers, including Chris Godwin, Michael Thomas and Mike Evans, it can be easy to overlook Jones’ steady production.

When you look at the numbers, though, it’s clear the former Alabama star isn’t ready to give up his mantle as the NFC South’s top receiver just yet.
