See it: Lawrence Tynes announces Giants’ selection of John Michael Schmitz

Watch retired New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes announce the team’s pick of John Michael Schmitz in the 2023 NFL draft.

Retired New York Giants kicker and two-time Super Bowl champion, Lawrence Tynes, took the podium in Kansas City on Friday night to announce the team’s second-round pick.

As expected, Tynes brought unique energy with him to the microphone and dressed down in a t-shirt featuring Brian Daboll’s bald head, called out the name of Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz.

Check it out:

“We’re looking for smart, we’re looking for tough, we’re looking for dependable,” Tynes roared.

Prior to the start of Day 2, Tynes said he planned to be straightforward with the announcement and worried only about properly pronouncing the player’s name.

Mission accomplished. As always, Tynes nailed it in clutch time.

Lawrence Tynes will announce Giants’ Round 2 pick in 2023 NFL draft

Retired New York Giants kicker, Lawrence Tynes, will announce the team’s second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Retired New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes will announce the team’s second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, he said Wednesday via Twitter.

Tynes began his career as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs before leaving for East Rutherford in 2007. He would win two Super Bowls with the Giants, highlighting a successful nine-year NFL career in which he made 190 field goals with 81.5% accuracy.

Kansas City will host the draft this year (April 27-29) after the Chiefs earned their third Super Bowl win in franchise history.

Over the franchise’s history, the Giants have drafted some pretty notable players in the second round, including Michael Strahan, Amani Toomer, Leonard Marshall, Tiki Barber and Osi Umenyiora.

Since 2010, New York has selected Linval Joseph, Landon Collins, Sterling Shepard and Dalvin Tomlinson in Round 2.

Kayvon Thibodeaux, Joe Staley engaged in hilariously bizarre Twitter feud over 49ers NFC title loss

Thibodeaux v. Staley was quite a Twitter battle.

New York Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and former San Francisco 49ers tackle Joe Staley got into one of the strangest Twitter beefs of the new year.

As the 49ers struggled to mount much of a fight against the Philadelphia Eagles during Sunday’s NFC championship, Thibodeaux took to Twitter to troll San Francisco for their bad afternoon.

Well, Staley took great offense to that and decided to slam Thibodeaux’s playing ability and say that he’s let New York media get to his head.

Thibodeaux responded with an equally devastating clapback, and the two were off in the bizarre social media back-and-forth. You can see the highlights below.

Then, out of nowhere, former Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes got in on the action.

Staley did not take kindly to Tynes’ response.

Adding to the conversation, former Giants pass rusher Michael Strahan came to Thibodeaux’s and Tynes’ defense.

As you can guess, there really wasn’t a “winner” to this feud, only social media hubbub. However, Staley wasn’t the only member of Niners faithful who didn’t like Thibodeaux’s post. San Francisco defensive end Arik Armstead had some critiques of his own.

Thibodeaux responded with a wisecrack of his own, but he doled out some respect for his fellow pass rusher.

While we certainly won’t see Thibodeaux and Staley take their beef onto the field since the latter hasn’t played since the 2019-20 season, the 49ers and Giants might have some words for each other the next time they play.

They both lost to the Eagles, so at least they have that in common.

Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux sparks Twitter beef with 49ers jab

New York Giants rookie LB Kayvon Thibodeaux ignited a Twitter war on Sunday night after taking aim at the San Francisco 49ers.

New York Giants rookie linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux is quickly becoming a lightning rod.

From his snow angel celebrations on the field to some of his commentary, Thibodeaux seems to rub some the wrong way. That played out again on Sunday night when Thibs took aim at the San Francisco 49ers on Twitter.

At the time of the tweet, the 49ers were taking it on the chin from the Philadelphia Eagles. They ultimately fell, 31-7, which sent Philly to the Super Bowl.

After catching wind of Thibodeaux’s tweet, retired 49ers offensive lineman Joe Staley returned fire on the rookie. Things took off from there.

The exchange eventually led retired Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes to chime in. He, too, took aim at Staley in an attempt to deflect some of the hate away from Thibodeaux.

Tynes, of course, kicked the Giants by the 49ers in the 2011 NFC Championship Game.

The back-and-forth did not sit well with Giants legend Michael Strahan.

For Thibodeaux, this wasn’t even his first “who are you” moment of the year. He had previously taken aim at Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday in much the same way.

The rookie then defended himself on Twitter.

If nothing else, Thibodeaux certainly knows how to stir the pot.

Giants great Lawrence Tynes ‘kicked off’ podcast for defending Eli Manning

New York Giants legend Lawrence Tynes was ‘kicked off’ a FOX Sports Radio podcast for defending two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.

Former New York Giants placekicker Lawrence Tynes was booted from a Philadelphia Eagles-centric podcast on FOX Sports Radio for sticking up for former teammate Eli Manning.

The exchange can be seen below:

The two hosts of the “Paulie and Tony Fusco Show” attempted to goad Tynes into saying that Manning was not a Hall of Fame quarterback and did not deserve to be named MVP of two Super Bowls.

In what seemed like a tongue-in-cheek exchange, Tynes would not relent and was kicked off the show after seven minutes of ridiculous grilling and browbeating by the hosts, who obviously think very little of Eli.

“Do you see those two [Super Bowl] trophies up there?” Tynes said. “Dak hasn’t even sniffed one … Eli Manning is an assassin. What are you talking about? Great player…He won two Super Bowls. How can he be an (expletive) quarterback?”

Tynes was then told to, “shut up and get outta here!”

He did. Gladly.

Did Giants safety Xavier McKinney violate his contract?

New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney appears to have violated his contract but it’s unlikely the team will take any action.

New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney hurt himself (and the Giants) this past weekend by inuring his hand in an ATV accident and fans are angry.

They have a right to be. The potential All-Pro will miss the next month and no matter what anyone tells you, it’s gonna hurt the Giants’ defense.

The message from the coaching staff every year is ‘be careful and not make any bad decisions’ and McKinney seems to have violated that, accident or not.

But did he violate his contract?

It is a standard clause in all Giants’ player’s contract that will “immediately become null and void in it’s entirety if … a player becomes unavailable to Club as a result of engaging in any activity which may involve significant risk of personal injury.”

Among those activities is an incident involving an “all-terrain or similar vehicle as a driver or passenger,” which is how McKinney was injured.

Will the Giants take action and dock him any pay? Probably not as it’s not a big deal, says former Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes

Tynes must have a short memory. Wasn’t he around when Plaxico Burress shot himself and derailed the Giants’ chance to repeat in 2012? And what about Chad Jones? Everyone remembers when Jason Pierre-Paul blew his half his hand off, so yes, fans are concerned.

I personally go back longer than most Giants writers/fans and remember the Troy Archer tragedy and even though this recent incident is not as severe as those, it stokes the worst memories for Giant fans. These are unforced errors and, as we know, they usually factor into your downfall.

Lawrence Tynes says Tom Brady was ‘super arrogant’ leading up to Super Bowl XLII

Lawrence Tynes claims Tom Brady was “super arrogant” before the Giants ended the Patriots’ perfect season

No one has broken more hearts of New England Patriots fans than former New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes, when he booted the game-winning field goal to end the Patriots’ perfect season at Super Bowl XLII.

Even the mere mention of that game is enough to make a diehard Patriots fan’s blood boil.

But for Tynes, more so than delivering that dagger to fans, he was glad to be the one to knock off former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who he claimed was “super arrogant” leading up to the game.

When speaking with Bally Sports’ Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Tynes admitted their was a “respectful hate” towards Brady and the Patriots before that matchup.

“It was nothing personal. But because he is kind of the golden child of the NFL and with a team that continues to win, and then you add in a little bit of the ‘Oh, they videotaped or they deflated footballs,’ and there’s just so much,” said Tynes. “A lot of people hate the Patriots. It’s not just Tom Brady. It’s because they’re good, right?

“We all hate teams that are good. …Yes. So there was some natural respectful hate if that even makes sense towards Tom Brady because he was super arrogant leading up to the week of the game, you know? Plaxico [Buress] had made a statement about the score, and then Tom said something about like, ‘You mean we’re only going to score 14 points or something?'”

Unfortunately for the Patriots, they were held to only 14 points on the biggest stage in sports and saw their historic unbeaten record ruined.

That game obviously still bothers Brady to this very day. Granted, he’s also gone on and won four more Super Bowls since then, too. So from a big picture perspective, that incredible win by the Giants was little more than a speedbump in the career of the greatest quarterback to ever do it.

Lawrence Tynes wants Giants to stay away from Mitchell Trubisky

Two-time Super Bowl champion, Lawrence Tynes, wants absolutely nothing to do with QB Mitchell Trubisky on the New York Giants.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

As the start of the new league year approaches, rumors of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to the New York Giants persist.

The Giants, of course, are looking to upgrade their backup quarterback position and provide Daniel Jones some training camp competition. And given Trubisky’s connections to general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, the move would make sense.

But that’s where the sense ends.

Trubisky is a surprisingly hot name with free agency looming and many expect him to be paid well — some even believe he’ll be overpaid. In fact, former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum think the former first-round pick could get up to $16 million in 2022.

That’s far too rich for the Giants’ blood but even beyond that, they have a better starting option in Jones. And that opinion is shared by retired Giant and two-time Super Bowl champion Lawrence Tynes.

Tynes is essentially echoing what those of us at Giants Wire (and others) have already expressed. If Trubisky was to come in as a low-cost backup option, that would be one thing. But at between $10 – $16 million? That just doesn’t make any sense for the cash-strapped organization.

The notion that Trubisky is somehow more talented or has a higher ceiling than Jones is just not steeped in any sort of reality. It’s an anti-Jones sentiment for the sake of being an anti-Jones sentiment.

Ex-Giant Lawrence Tynes: Saquon Barkley didn’t lose a step, he lost his ‘want to’

Former New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes doesn’t believe Saquon Barkley has lost a step but instead, lost his “want to.”

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley appeared on the Pat McAfee Show this week and had a message for both his doubters and haters.

It was a similar message to one Barkley shared previously, but the sentiment remains the same: if you doubt him, don’t do a magical 180 and start supporting him when he returns to form.

“You can say what you want about me . . . but when things turn around, I can see how everyone shifted to the other side. And make sure you stick to the other side,” Barkley said. “Keep the same energy.”

Those words are nearly identical to ones Barkley shared in mid-January.

“For everyone outside in the world who were fans but may not be fans right now, for you guys [in the media] who are going to write something positive or mostly something negative about me, just make sure you guys stay on that side of the table when things turn around,” Barkley said at the time.

The notion that Barkley has “lost a step” is not universally agreed upon. However, there’s no denying that the second overall pick in 2018 has fallen off considerably in recent years.

Some may blame Barkley’s lack of production on injuries — a fair argument — while others stick to the “lost a step” narrative. But former Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes isn’t in either camp. Rather, he believes the cause for Barkley’s regression is internal.

Those are some strong words and a damning indictment of Barkley from someone who spent many years on the field, winning a couple championships in the process.

Tynes doesn’t come off as someone being intentionally disrespectful, just honest in his opinion. And it’s likely one that others also silently share.

Is it true? Has Barkley just lost his love of the game and desire to be great? We certainly wouldn’t go that far as Barkley worked hard to get through various serious injuries, played hurt and grinded to get back on the field. You don’t do that if you don’t love the game — and Barkley clearly loves the game.

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, the crickets will continue chirping until he returns to his Rookie of the Year form. And if he does, they’ll fall silent again very quickly. If not, they’ll only grow louder.

Lawrence Tynes on Giants’ injury woes: Players were over-worked

Lawrence Tynes believes the New York Giants’ recent history with injuries stems from players being over-worked.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen says one of his first orders of business will be doing a “deep dive” into the team’s recent history of injury.

“Some of the issues around here in the past have been injuries. We need to do a deep dive into that and make sure we’re doing everything we can so these players can put their best foot forward on Sundays,” Schoen told Tiki and Tierney.

It will also be important for the next head coach to make sure the injury issues are capped.

“Are you going to listen to Ronnie Barnes and the guys downstairs? Are you going to listen to the strength coach? Are you going to listen to the sports performance when they tell you we need to pull back and don’t keep pushing?” Schoen said.

But retired Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes doesn’t necessarily believe there needs to be a deep dive. He remains plugged into the organization and claims the injury issues are the result of something very obvious.

Although former general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge repeatedly said they made decisions in the players’ best interest, several did seem to return early. And being overworked on top of that likely stemmed from a paper-thin roster.

But that only explains the previous two years. The Giants’ injury issues extend well beyond that and all the way back to the Tom Coughlin era in 2009. Since then, the Giants are the league’s most-injured team, having players miss over 3,000 combined games due to injury.

No one else in the NFL has reached the 3,000-game threshold over that same span.

Many maintain that Ronnie Barnes and the Giants’ medical staff are the best in the business, but the results no longer seem to reflect that. Even if you can explain away the injury issues from the previous two years, there is still more than a decade of unanswered injury questions.

The Giants hope Schoen is able to uncover something that has clearly been missed. Something beyond being overworked the previous two years.
