Former Bengals player loves the team signing Lawrence Guy

One former player loves what the Bengals added to the defense.

Former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Mike Daniels loves the team’s signing of veteran Lawrence Guy in free agency.

Seeking emergency depth ahead of the Week 3 game against the Washington Commanders, the Bengals signed Guy and made a flurry of other roster moves.

Daniels, who spent 2020 and 2021 with the Bengals, wrote the following on social media: “This is HUGE for the Bengals. They aren’t very stout up front right now and this will shore up the toughness and gap control in the run. Not to mention the true veteran presence and super bowl pedigree that he brings!”

An endorsement from Daniels, one of social media’s favorite Begnals of the past few years, will mean a lot with fans.

Guy has this endorsement and a long, successful resume as he joins the 53-man roster. The Bengals currently haven’t revealed the status of starters B.J. Hill and Sheldon Rankins after Week 2 injuries and rookies McKinnley Jackson and Kris Jenkins Jr. are dealing with issues of their own, too.

Bengals make roster moves after signing Lawrence Guy

More roster moves for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals needed to make a handful of minor roster moves to fit new free-agent addition Lawrence Guy.

Tuesday, the team made the signing of Guy official and, to make room for him on the 53-man roster, waived defensive end KJ Henry.

The Bengals had claimed Henry on waivers in late August as depth on the end in response to injuries there, such as Myles Murphy going to injured reserve.

Cincinnati also announced the release of wideout Shedrick Jackson from the practice squad, presumably to later make room for Henry there.

The fact the Bengals felt it necessary to fit Guy right onto the main roster instead of slipping him onto the practice squad speaks to the problems in the trenches.

Both B.J. Hill and Sheldon Rankins suffered injuries in Week 2 and are out for an unknown amount of time, while rookies McKinnley Jackson and Kris Jenkins Jr. are out with injuries, too. Jackson is on injured reserve, while there is no solid return date for Jenkins.

Bengals host former Patriots captain for workout on Tuesday

A former Patriots Super Bowl champion is visiting the Bengals for a workout

Former New England Patriots defensive captain Lawrence Guy worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Guy, who was a team captain in 2020, was an integral part of the Patriots defense for seven seasons. He signed as a free agent with the team in 2017 and had 110 regular season appearances for the organization. All told, he recorded 379 tackles and 37 quarterback hits in his time with the Patriots.

Guy most recently worked out for the Baltimore Ravens back in August. However, he did not sign with the organization.

This could be an opportunity for Guy to reassert himself as one of the most dependable defensive linemen in the NFL. It would be quite the opportunity for him to do so with a potential Super Bowl contender.

The Bengals could certainly use the help up front considering the Patriots were able to rack up 185 total rushing yards against them in the season-opening matchup.

Ravens to host veteran defensive end Lawrence Guy on a free agent visit

Baltimore Ravens to host Lawrence Guy on a free agent visit

The Ravens revealed their initial 53-man roster for 2024, but the club is continually working to find depth. On Wednesday, they’ll be hosting a familiar name: Former Patriots defensive end Lawrence Guy, who is visiting the Under Armour Performance Center as a free agent.

Guy entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick (233rd overall) out of Arizona State in the 2011 NFL Draft.

He has also spent time with the Green Bay Packers (2011), Indianapolis Colts (2012-13), San Diego Chargers (2013-14) and Ravens (2014-16).

Guy has played in 177 regular season games with 122 starts and has 507 total tackles, 17 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries. In addition, he has played in 13 postseason games with nine starts and registered 33 total tackles. Last season, Guy played in 17 games with 12 starts for the Patriots and finished with 38 total tackles.

Giants implored to sign DT Lawrence Guy

Aaron Schatz of ESPN believes the New York Giants should sign veteran DT Lawrence Guy as one of their final roster moves ahead of camp.

The New York Giants are currently enjoying their summer break but that doesn’t necessarily mean roster tinkering has concluded. General manager Joe Schoen is forever looking for ways to improve the team and several needs remain.

One potential need comes at defensive tackle, where the Giants are somewhat thin behind superstar Dexter Lawrence.

There is some quality talent in Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Jordon Riley, and Jordan Phillips but Riley is still developing and Phillips, who contemplated retirement this offseason, could become a cap casualty.

Aaron Schatz of ESPN believes the Giants could shore up the position and quell some of those concerns by signing veteran defensive tackle Lawrence Guy.

The Giants’ biggest roster hole probably is tight end after the retirement of Darren Waller, but without a lot of strong tight ends available on the free agency market, it’s hard to recommend that as a big final move. Instead, the Giants have several places on their defense where they could add veteran depth. Guy spent the past seven seasons with the Patriots and can play against the pass and the run. He had an 83% stop rate last season on his run tackles, meaning that they stopped a successful offensive play 83% of the time. The Giants don’t want to be rotating out Dexter Lawrence very much, but Guy would give them more depth along with Jordan Phillips and Rakeem Nunez-Roches.

The 34-year-old Guy was originally selected by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL draft. He also had stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and Baltimore Ravens before spending the past seven seasons with the New England Patriots.

In 177 career games (122 starts), Guy has recorded 507 tackles (271 solo, 39 for a loss), 63 QB hits, 17.0 sacks, nine passes defensed, one interception, and two forced fumbles.

Although Guy would represent solid depth and a veteran presence, defensive coordinator Shane Bowen seems inclined to add an interior option who excels at rushing the passer. That is not exactly what Guy does best.

Update on Patriots releasing Lawrence Guy and Adrian Phillips

More information on the Patriots’ decision to move on from Lawrence Guy and Adrian Phillips

The New England Patriots shook up their roster last Monday by releasing veteran defensive lineman Lawrence Guy and cornerback Adrian Phillips.

For a rebuilding team looking to create as much cap space as possible heading into free agency, it made total sense for the Patriots to move on from the two aging veterans. Given their current situation, the Patriots are in a position where they should be prioritizing youth.

However, ESPN’s Mike Reiss also noted the timing of the move being significant. In his Sunday notes column, he pointed to a conversation with an agent, who viewed it as the team doing both Lawrence and Phillips a favor by giving them a head start in free agency.

Reiss wrote:

One agent viewed it as a show of respect to the two longtime veterans, giving them a head start on free agency and allowing interested teams time to study them before a glut of players fills the market.

Both Guy and Phillips were two highly-respected veterans in the locker room, and they’ll surely land on their feet elsewhere. The Patriots can only hope to replicate those personalities when attempting to build the right culture for the new era.

Lawrence Guy comments on social media after release from Patriots

Lawrence Guy thanked New England fans, following news of his release

After seven seasons, the New England Patriots are reportedly moving on from veteran defensive lineman Lawrence Guy.

The move frees Guy up to explore opportunities with other teams in free agency. On the other end, the Patriots free up cap space and shift their focus to some of the younger talent on their roster.

In short, it was a business decision for the rebuilding Patriots.

After the move was reported, Guy took to social media to thank New England for the past seven years.

“Thank you New England you welcomed my family and I for the past seven years and always made us feel at home, the community we build the people we met and the communities we impacted thank you for always welcoming us with open arms. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me,” Guy posted on X.

Guy contributed on 46 percent of the snaps last season for a Patriots defense that ranked top-10 in the league. He’s a steady and reliable locker room presence ready to compete and contribute as a rotational piece in a defense.

At age 33, Guy clearly still has gas left in the tank.

Patriots releasing longtime starting defensive lineman Lawrence Guy

The New England Patriots are reportedly releasing veteran defensive lineman Lawrence Guy.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news on Monday.

Guy, 33, will now have an opportunity to go out and test the free agent market after spending the last seven seasons in New England. The Patriots are likely looking to get younger on defense, while also shoring up extra cap space to make bigger moves in free agency.

Guy has served as one of the key veterans on the Patriots’ defense, including the team’s last championship run in the 2018 season. This obviously isn’t the end of the road for Guy, who should have other opportunities on the open market.

This is just the beginning of a slew of moves likely to come for a Patriots team with a new regime overseeing things in the post-Bill Belichick era.

Patriots DL Lawrence Guy earns Week 13 honors as NFLPA Community MVP

Patriots DL Lawrence Guy is being honored as the Week 13 NFLPA Community MVP.

New England Patriots defensive lineman Lawrence Guy is being recognized as the Week 13 NFLPA Community MVP.

Per the NFLPA’s official website, Guy donated strollers to “40 black and indigenous moms at healthcare centers across Boston.” It was just one of the many philanthropic acts the veteran defender has done in his 13 seasons in the NFL.

The NFLPA recognizes a player that has made an impact in his hometown or team city each week as the Community MVP. After picking a winner, the NFLPA then donates $10,000 to that player’s charity of choice.

Guy, and his wife, Andrea Guy, also head up the Lawrence Guy Family Foundation, which helps provide “resources and opportunities for financially disadvantaged families.”

In so many ways, the Guy family has shown us it isn’t about the impact you make on the football field, but it’s one you make off it that really matters.

Lawrence Guy empathizes with Jalen Mills’ snap count frustrations

Lawrence Guy understands where Jalen Mills is coming from

New England Patriots defensive tackle Lawrence Guy spoke about teammate Jalen Mills tweeting his frustration over playing time. He empathized with the veteran safety, who voiced his displeasure on Wednesday afternoon.

Mills only had 10 snaps in Sunday’s loss to the New Orleans Saints, which was tied with rookie safety Ameer Speed for the lowest.

Guy admitted to having been in the same position before. Now, he is an integral part of the New England defensive line and has been for the past several years.

“I’ve been in that frustration part,” Guy said, when talking to the media on Thursday. “He works hard. He works hard every single day. If you ask a question in a meeting, he knows that meeting. He knows the answer, like boom, he could spit it out.

“This is how the dice are rolled right now, but it doesn’t stop his preparation. It doesn’t stop his work ethic on the field. That’s kudos to him. I understand certain situations are what they are, but I can tell you this, the grind that man has on the field, and the passion he has, is amazing. And like I said, if you ask him any question about the opponent, he knows everything about it. It just didn’t roll that way this week.”

Mills’ frustration is understandable, as New England has struggled to find depth defensively. He has been an important part of the Patriots defense during his tenure with the team.

Whether that leads to more playing time or not remains to be seen.
