Texans place LT Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve among other roster moves

The Houston Texans have placed left tackle Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve along with other roster moves ahead of Week 6 at the Indianapolis Colts.

The Houston Texans have placed left tackle Laremy Tunsil on injured reserve.

The two-time Pro Bowler sustained a thumb injury in the Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots. Tunsil will miss the next three games and will be eligible to return for the Nov. 7 matchup against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Texans also made other roster moves ahead of their Week 6 showdown with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Lucas Oil Stadium.

With the open spot on the roster, the Texans signed quarterback Jeff Driskel to the active roster to backup rookie Davis Mills on game day.

Houston also elevated guard Cole Toner and guard Lane Taylor to the practice squad as part of their standard elevations.

The Texans also activated rookie receiver Nico Collins from injured reserve. He will make his return after getting injured in Week 2 at the Cleveland Browns.

To make room for Collins, the Texans released linebacker Joe Thomas from the active roster.

Texans OT Geron Christian has built ‘pretty good relationship’ with Laremy Tunsil

Houston Texans offensive tackle Geron Christian says that he has forged a good connection with Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

When Geron Christian became a part of the Houston Texans, he knew what he had to do in order to have staying power at NRG Stadium.

The former Washington 2018 third-round pick from Louisville developed a connection with starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Christian has worked to be an effective understudy of the two-time Pro Bowler.

““Since being here, me and L.T. have built a pretty good relationship,” said Christian. “At meetings and stuff, we sit together and just talk since we play the same position. We talk about whatever, regardless if it’s me or him. Just whatever it can be, the plays, asking what he will do, how he will approach, if he’s doing this or if he’s doing that, whatever it is. We’ve got a good relationship, so we pretty much have had a wide conversation about everything since I got here.”

Christian will take more than a few pointers from Tunsil as he fills in for the starting left tackle. Tunsil is expected to miss the next four weeks as he recovers from surgery on his thumb.

As Christian took the first-team reps at left tackle, the 6-6, 315-pounder says he felt prepared to take over for rookie quarterback Davis Mills’ blindside.

“I felt good,” said Christian. “Just taking the reps and stuff throughout the week. I still get some reps, and then just focusing on what I need to improve on personally. What I do during the scout reps, I felt pretty prepared going into the game.”

The Texans face the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from Lucas Oil Stadium in a battle of two 1-4 clubs.

Texans prepare to fill left tackle with Laremy Tunsil working through hand injury

The Houston Texans are prepared to do what they must with the absence of left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

The Houston Texans are taking the hits amid their four-game losing streak.

While the Texans faltered 25-22 to the New England Patriots in Week 5 at NRG Stadium, two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil injured his hand. Tunsil will have surgery on the hand, and his status to return is at least four weeks away.

Receiver Brandin Cooks deemed the loss of Tunsil as “huge.”

I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but if that is the case, it’s huge,” said Cooks. “You talk about a talent like that, I mean, the guy is special. He’s been playing at a high level since the moment he stepped into this league.”

Tunsil has started in all 33 games he has played for the Texans since Week 1 of 2019. All of Tunsil’s Pro Bowl selections have come during his time in Houston.

The player who is affected the most by the absence of Tunsil is rookie quarterback Davis Mills. However, the third-rounder from Stanford is confident that whoever fills in for Tunsil will be adequately prepared by offensive coordinator Tim Kelly and offensive line coach James Campen to do the job.

“I’m sure whoever will fill in for him is going to be ready, coached up by Coach Campen and T.K., and they’ll be ready for it,” said Mills.

The Texans have a couple of options. They could have Geron Christian fill in at left tackle, which is what happened against the Patriots. While unlikely, Houston could move Charlie Heck to the left side, and the second-year pro would be ready for the move.

Cooks similarly stated that Houston will have to live up to the fabled “next man up” mentality that is pervasive across the NFL.

Said Cooks: “Like I just said, with the next man up, when your number is called, being ready. We’ll be ready for that.”

The Texans take on the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts are tied for the 10th-fewest sacks in the NFL with 10 and also the fewest pressures in the league with 27.

Texans will be without LT Laremy Tunsil vs. Colts

The Texans will be without LT Laremy Tunsil against the Colts in Week 6.

The Indianapolis Colts won’t have to face Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil in Week 6 as the former first-round pick is expected to miss time after undergoing surgery on his thumb.

With the Colts looking to get back into the win column for just the second time this season, this could turn out to be an advantage for a struggling pass rush. Though injured players are nothing to celebrate, it is likely to have an impact on the game.

Texans head coach David Culley told Houston media this week that Tunsil could be out for roughly a month due to the surgery.

“We’re thinking maybe right now it could be four weeks, not really sure, but that’s what we’re thinking it could be,” said Culley.

The Colts haven’t gotten much out of their pass rush this season. Rookie Kwity Paye has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury while the production from Tyquan Lewis and Al-Quadin Muhammad has been inconsistent.

Stepping in for Tunsil at left tackle will be Geron Christian, who came in during the Week 5 game against the New England Patriots when Tunsil initially injured his thumb.

The Houston Texans released their first injury report of Week 6 as they gear up to play the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Among the limited participants, Houston had running back Rex Burkhead (hip), receiver Danny Amendola (thigh), linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill (hip), and receiver Brandin Cooks (not injury related).

Coming off of a Monday night overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium, the Colts are working through a short week and thus made Wednesday a walkthrough.

Texans LT Laremy Tunsil could miss 4 weeks with thumb injury

The Houston Texans could be without the services of LT Laremy Tunsil as he recovers from a thumb injury that required surgery.

Houston Texans coach David Culley kicked off his press conference with news fans didn’t want to hear to start the first day of Week 6 in the NFL.

After congratulating the Houston Astros on advancing to the ALCS by knocking off the Chicago White Sox, Culley provided an injury update for left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

“Laremy Tunsil will be having surgery tomorrow on his thumb,” Culley said.

Tunsil had injured his hand during the 25-22 loss to the New England Patriots at NRG Stadium. Backup Geron Christian stepped in for 33 plays, although Tunsil did return for Houston but went immediately into the blue medical tent on the sideline as the game concluded.

Culley provided a time table for when Tunsil could return.

“We’re thinking maybe right now it could be four weeks, not really sure, but that’s what we’re thinking it could be,” said Culley.

Christian is expected to go in the two-time Pro Bowler’s absence. The former Washington 2018 third-round pick from Louisville started eight of his 24 games with the NFC East club from 2018-20.

“Geron is going to go right at that position,” said Culley. “We feel good about that. He knows the backup. He’s backed up both sides. He’ll be on the left side and Charlie [Heck] will be on the right side. In this league, the next man up has to go, and he’s the next guy up.”

The Texans placed starting right tackle Marcus Cannon on injured reserve on Oct. 9 as the former Patriot has been dealing with a back injury.

Texans LT Laremy Tunsil questionable to return vs. Patriots with hand injury

Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil is questionable to return against the New England Patriots with a hand injury.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans’ Pro-Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil sustained a left-hand injury on Sunday and his return is questionable.

Tunsil sustained the injury late in the first quarter of the Week 5 match against the 1-3 New England Patriots and has been in and out of the lineup throughout the first half.

When the Texans began their opening drive of the third quarter, Tunsil remained on the sideline getting his hand evaluated by a team trainer. Geron Christian Sr. replaced Tunsil at left tackle.

In the Texans’ attempt to bounce back from a 40-0 defeat, Tunsil one of the team’s issues was their inability to stay consistent.

“That is my theme, be more consistent,” he said on Friday. “We have to be consistent with everything we do. We got to play complementary football, that’s what Coach says, complimentary football. If we do that then it wouldn’t have been 40-0.”

Brian Baldinger says Texans LT Laremy Tunsil ‘pitched a no-hitter’ against Browns DE Myles Garrett

NFL analyst Brian Baldinger says that Houston Texans LT Laremy Tunsil had a tremendous game against Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett.

Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil may not be up for any of the weekly awards, but he did get some recognition after his effort against Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett in the 31-21 loss in Week 2.

NFL analyst Brian Baldinger broke down Tunsil’s film on his Twitter account. Baldinger talked about how the two-time Pro Bowler was able to keep Garrett away from quarterbacks Tyrod Taylor and Davis Mills.

“It’s not like the Texans are bereft of talent,” said Baldinger. “They still have maybe the league’s best left tackle in Laremy Tunsil. And he went up against Myles Garrett a bunch in this game and really had no problem whatsoever. Every once in a while he came over and they helped him or whatever, but he locked him up. I mean, Myles Garrett could not get to the quarterback in this game. You watch play after play after play.”

Later in the evaluation, Baldinger said that Tunsil “pitched a no-hitter” against the former 2017 No. 1 overall pick.

Garrett finished the afternoon with just four combined tackles and was unable to get a quarterback hit.

Pro Football Focus evaluated Tunsil as the third-worst pass blocker on the Texans in Week 2 with a 63.0 grade.

Texans LT Laremy Tunsil ran in parks to stay in shape while recovering from COVID-19

Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil says he ran in local parks to stay in shape while recovering from COVID-19.

Houston Texans left tackle Larmey Tunsil missed the entire preseason as he was placed on the COVID-19 reserve the day before the first preseason tilt with the Green Bay Packers.

The Texans placed Tunsil on the reserve on Aug. 13 and he did not come off of the reserve until Aug. 30. In that span, Tunsil found ways to stay in shape.

“I had to battle through some sickness and try to get well, try to find a way to stay in shape and help the team anyway I can when I had COVID,” Tunsil said. “I am glad I am over it and hopefully I don’t have to go through that again.”

According to the two-time Pro Bowler, he was “sick for a couple of days” and then went to a park and started to run in an effort to, “just try to stay in shape as much as I can.”

Tunsil says he did 100-yard sprints in random parks to just stay in shape.

“There was kids out there,” said Tunsil. “Like I had to wear a mask, I am out there sweating with a mask on.”

Tunsil admits he would get strange looks.

Said Tunsil: “They did look at me weird, like ‘What is he doing?’ But I had to stay in shape.”

In 2020, Tunsil missed the Texans’ Week 11 game with the New England Patriots due to an illness. He also missed the Week 17 game with the Tennessee Titans with an ankle injury.

Tunsil returned for Week 1 to start at left tackle for Houston in their 37-21 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at NRG Stadium. With consistency available at left tackle, Tunsil will give the Texans protection at Tyrod Taylor’s blindside as they face the Cleveland Browns Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Can the Texans improve running efficiency on the left side?

Houston Texans coach David Culley doesn’t believe the lost time between Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard contributed to the lost production in Week 1.

The Houston Texans produced 13 carries for 45 yards, and a touchdown on the left side against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1.

Although the Texans were able to come away with a convincing 37-21 victory over the Jaguars at NRG Stadium, the Texans’ ball control offense needs to be at peak efficiency in order to give Houston a shot against more formidable opponents.

Coach David Culley told reporters Wednesday that the missed time from left tackle Laremy Tunsil and the position switch of Tytus Howard from right tackle to left guard weren’t a big factor in the missed production.

“I think in this particular ballgame, it just happened that way,” said Culley. “I mean, it wasn’t so much that it was because of we weren’t as effective there. We went the other way, we were more successful doing that, and basically, we’ll end up continuing to do that.”

Overall the Texans’ run game was successful with 160 yards and two touchdowns churned out on 41 carries. However, it was the center and the right side of the line that made up for the best parts of the running game.

Houston wants to improve their run game against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2.

“Obviously we want to be able to go both ways and be able to go wherever we need to go to be able to be successful,” said Culley.
