Analysis: LSU’s Lance Heard enters the transfer portal

Here’s what LSU is losing with offensive tackle Lance Heard hitting the transfer portal.

The transfer portal window is now closed, but LSU took one of its biggest hits at the buzzer this week.

Offensive linemen [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] entered the portal. It was no surprise after Heard didn’t travel for the bowl game as head coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said Heard was evaluating his role with the program.

The writing was on the wall here.

Out of all the Tigers to hit the portal, Heard is the most talented. There’s no getting around that. He was a five-star recruit in 2023 and according to PFF, he was the top-graded freshman offensive lineman. This is a guy that’s ready to play now.

Where does this leave LSU?

The offensive line will be fine. [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] and [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag] are two of the best in the SEC, and there are enough pieces that the interior will work itself out.

But if Heard was on the roster, that would allow LSU to play him at right tackle and bump Jones to guard. The bottom line is with Campbell, Jones and Heard, LSU had three tackles that are capable of playing at an All-SEC level.

That’s something you usually don’t find and an incredible luxury.

Now, LSU doesn’t have that luxury. It’ll be counting on Campbell and Jones to stay healthy, which they’ve done so far, and another young lineman to make a jump.

LSU signed two more blue-chip tackles in the 2023 class, [autotag]Tyree Adams[/autotag] and [autotag]DJ Chester[/autotag]. Adams played just three offensive snaps this year and Chester has a bright future, but it’s at the center position.

LSU doesn’t have an immediate answer to solve its depth issue at tackle now. And again, every team in the country has depth issues on the offensive line. That’s what made LSU having Campbell, Jones and Heard so special.

[autotag]Brad Davis[/autotag] is one of the best offensive line coaches in the business and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he had Adams ready to compete on the two-deep next year. [autotag]Bo Bordelon[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Mubenga[/autotag] were three-star recruits who could pan out too.

Or maybe it’s one of the 2024 signees like [autotag]Weston Davis[/autotag] or [autotag]Ethan Calloway[/autotag], two more blue-chip tackle recruits set to join that room.

Regardless, LSU needs an answer now. Heard was projected as an All-American level player. That’s now one less player of that caliber on LSU’s roster.

It’s on Davis to develop another one of these guys to fill that gap.

LSU lands a legacy SEC cornerback in the transfer portal

Austin Ausberry, son of former LSU linebacker Verge Ausberry, committed to the Tigers in the portal.

It has been a crazy day for LSU football. [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] and Brian Thomas Jr. announced that they would enter their names into the 2024 NFL draft, [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] entered the transfer portal,as did [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag].

All three of those things are bad news, but here is some good news.

LSU landed a redshirt freshman cornerback from Auburn in the transfer portal. Once again, another player from the boot is coming home. [autotag]Austin Ausberry[/autotag] is from Baton Rouge where he played for University Lab, and he’s the son of former Tigers linebacker [autotag]Verge Ausberry[/autotag].

The 6-foot, 200-pound cornerback redshirted last year for Auburn after appearing in only four games and making one tackle. This year was not much different for him. He appeared in only three games this year and made one tackle.

Ausberry will come to the bayou with three years of eligibility left and will provide LSU with another defensive back who has a little playing experience.

LSU true freshman receiver, former blue chip recruit enters transfer portal

A former top-70 recruit, Jalen Brown redshirted while appearing in three games in 2023.

Following the conclusion of LSU’s season with a 35-31 win over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Day, it saw the departure of two of the top signees in the 2023 class.

First was former five-star offensive tackle [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag], who signaled his decision when he didn’t travel with the team to Tampa. Next was former four-star receiver [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], who entered just before the deadline on Tuesday night.

A top-70 prospect in the 2023 class from Gulliver Prep in Miami, Brown redshirted during his true freshman season while appearing in three games but recording no stats. He’ll have four remaining years of eligibility at his next stop.

It’s a blow to a Tigers receiver room that’s set to lose [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] It will return veterans [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag], [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag] as well as another highly touted 2023 signee who redshirted in [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag]

BREAKING: Former 5-star LSU OT Lance Heard enters transfer portal

Lance Heard didn’t travel with the Tigers to Tampa for the ReliaQuest Bowl.

LSU managed to avoid any major losses in the transfer portal, but that changed on the final day before it closed.

On Tuesday, true freshman offensive tackle [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] announced his intentions to transfer from LSU after one season. The news wasn’t exactly a surprise as the former five-star recruit from Monroe didn’t travel with the team to Tampa for the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said that Heard —  who ranked as a top-15 prospect nationally coming out of high school — was evaluating his future with the program at the time. In 2023, he appeared in 12 games and made one start at right tackle.

LSU is expected to return both starting tackles in 2024 as [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] and [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag] are not draft-eligible. Heard didn’t have a clear path to start, but losing the highest-rated recruit from the 2023 signing class will certainly hurt.

Report: Will Campbell back at practice, Miles Frazier now missing time with illness

LSU could be dealing with some availability issues on the offensive line heading into the ReliaQuest Bowl.

LSU got some slightly concerning news on Friday as starting left tackle [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] missed practice while he battled the flu.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said Campbell was still expected to suit up in Monday’s ReliaQuest Bowl, and Saturday’s practice session provided an encouraging update as Campbell was back in action, according to The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander.

It wasn’t all good news along LSU’s offensive line, however, as right guard [autotag]Miles Frazier[/autotag] missed Saturday’s practice as he is now dealing with an illness. In his place, Lunsford saw starting reps.

Frazier is a transfer from Florida International who has started 24 of the 25 games he’s appeared in since arriving at LSU in 2022.

If Frazier isn’t able to go, it would open the door for Lunsford to make his first start of the season. A graduate transfer addition this offseason from Maryland with multiple years of starting experience, he’s been relegated to a reserve role this fall and has appeared in just five games with no starts.

True freshman offensive tackle [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] would likely have made the start at right tackle with [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag] shifting inside, but Heard did not make the trip to Tampa as he contemplates his future at LSU, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said.

Brian Kelly addresses Lance Heard’s absence from the ReliaQuest Bowl

Brian Kelly said Lance Heard is evaluating his future with the program.

LSU was expecting a full house at the ReliaQuest Bowl as coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said every player available in the final week of the regular season except [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], who opted out, would play in the postseason matchup.

However, after the team flew to Tampa, news broke that true freshman offensive tackle [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag], a former five-star prospect who appeared in 12 games with one start this fall, did not travel.

During his Friday press conference, Kelly addressed Heard’s absence and said he was evaluating his future with the team. He added that conversations about his future would take place after the bowl game.

Heard is a promising young talent expected to play a key role in the coming years, so if he were mulling a decision to enter the transfer portal, it would certainly be significant news for the Tigers in 2024.

Latest updates on Lance Heard situation

Lance Heard’s future at LSU is in “limbo,” he told On3’s Billy Embody.

LSU was expected to be at full strength aside from quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], who opted out, in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin on New Year’s Day.

However, new broke on Wednesday that true freshman offensive tackle and former five-star recruit [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] did not make the trip to Tampa, leaving his status with the team unclear.

On3’s Billy Embody provided some updates on The Jordy Culotta Show Thursday after speaking to Heard. While he didn’t get into specifics, he said Heard is still evaluating his future, which is currently in “limbo,” though he is considering a return to LSU next season.

Embody didn’t know the specifics of Heard’s situation and whether his absence had to do with an intention to enter the portal, grades, NIL money or something else entirely.

Regardless, it will be one of the biggest stories to watch as LSU prepares for its postseason matchup against the Badgers.

Report: OT Lance Heard did not travel with LSU to ReliaQuest Bowl

Lance Heard appeared in 12 games as a true freshman this season, recording one start.

LSU made its way down to Tampa on Tuesday for a New Year’s Day matchup against Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl, but it will be without a key reserve on its offensive line.

Offensive tackle [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] did not make the trip, according to On3’s Shea Dixon. The reasoning behind it is unclear, especially as coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said he expected everyone from the final week of the regular season to be available aside from quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], who opted out of the game.

A former five-star recruit from Monroe, Heard appeared in all 12 games this season, notching one start at right tackle against Army.

Heard is a promising talent and was expected to compete for a starting role, so if this is a sign he intends to enter the transfer portal, it would be a major loss for LSU.

LSU signs a top five offensive tackle according to On3

LSU signed one of the top offensive tackles in the country in its 2024 recruiting class.

LSU signed one of the top offensive tackles in the country in their 2024 recruiting class. According to On3, the Tigers signed a guy who was the No. 5 overall offensive tackle in the country.

[autotag]Weston Davis[/autotag] is a 6-foot-5, 285-pound, four-star offensive tackle from Beaumont, Texas where he played for Beaumont United High School. Davis chose LSU over Texas A&M, Alabama, Oklahoma and others. He is ranked as high as the No. 3 offensive tackle in the class by On3.

The Tigers signed six offensive linemen in the 2024 recruiting class to add some depth to an offensive line that was a finalist for the Joe Moore Award. If the LSU offensive line can stay healthy in 2024, they should be a finalist for the Joe Moore Award once again as [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has assembled a talented group of guys up front.

Davis will be an offensive tackle and be behind [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag], [autotag]Emory Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] on the roster.

LSU OL Lance Heard named to Freshman All-SEC team

Lance Heard was mostly a rotational player as a true freshman, but he was still honored by the league office on Thursday after appearing in 12 games with one start.

LSU didn’t rely much on young players in 2023, but it did have one player named to the Freshman All-SEC team.

Offensive tackle [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] was honored by the league office after seeing a mostly rotational role in his true freshman season. A five-star signee in the 2023 class, the Monroe native from Neville High School came in with lofty expectations.

Though he found himself behind sophomore tackles [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] and [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag] on the depth chart, he still appeared as a mostly rotational player in 12 games, though he did make one start at right tackle against Auburn early in the season.

Though both Jones and Campbell are expected to return in 2024, Heard will enter his sophomore season looking to compete for a starting spot at tackle or guard.
