Lamar Stevens on Boston Celtics training camp, locking up Kevin Durant

The new Celtics forward has a real shot at having an impact on a contending ball club with his gritty, high-intensity style of play.

The Boston Celtics signed reserve forward Lamar Stevens to a training camp contract after he started 25 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers one season ago. The deal gives him no guarantees for the season ahead, but CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning’s interview with Stevens and his trainer Henry Woo Jr. revealed that both are confident in Stevens making Boston’s roster for the storied ball club’s 2023-24 campaign and a run at Banner 18.

Manning and Stevens also talked about his summer workouts in front of famed Canadian rapper and former actor Drake, guarding NBA stars like Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant, and Stevens’ shooting form compared to seasons past.

The new Celtics forward has a real shot at having an impact on a contending ball club with his gritty, high-intensity style of play — particularly if that jumper starts to fall.

What will Lamar Stevens role with the Boston Celtics in 2023-24 be?

His defensive chops would indeed provide a clear role with the Celtics, but with players like Svi Mykhailiuk, Jordan Walsh, Oshae Brissett, and Sam Hauser, the Philadelphia native has his work cut out for him in terms of fighting for minutes.

The signing of former Cleveland Cavaliers wing Lamar Stevens by the Boston Celtics has caught the attention of fans, but also left league analysts wondering exactly how he fits into the team’s overall rotations.

His defensive chops would indeed provide a clear role with the Celtics, but with players like Svi Mykhailiuk, Jordan Walsh, Oshae Brissett, and Sam Hauser, the Philadelphia native has his work cut out for him in terms of fighting for minutes this season to come. If it does not work out for Stevens next season, he is on an unguaranteed deal, but his slashing and midrange game makes sense on paper at least.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast had plenty to say about his potential role with Boston in 2023-24.

How does Lamar Stevens improve the Celtics?

The Boston Celtics have added Lamar Stevens to their roster for the upcoming season, but how does he improve the team?

The Boston Celtics have added former Clevland Cavaliers wing Lamar Stevens to their roster on a partially guaranteed deal, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Stevens has a reputation for being a solid defender and amassed 24 starts for his former team last season.

Boston lost some of their defensive intensity this past season, trading away Marcus Smart and Grant Williams. As such, Stevens could find himself assuming a significant role as a wing-stopper off the bench as Joe Mazzulla searches for a better balance between offense and defense.

In the latest episode of the “Green With Envy” podcast, hosts Adam Taylor and Greg Maneikis discussed the Celtics’ latest addition and how Stevens’ positional versatility could help give Mazzulla some new rotation options that would ensure a high-level wing defender is on the court at all times.

New Boston Celtics wing Lamar Stevens’ Cleveland Cavaliers highlights

Stevens, the newest addition to the Boston Celtics’ 2023-24 roster, brings a unique set of strengths to the team.

Lamar Stevens, the newest addition to the Boston Celtics‘ 2023-24 roster, brings a unique set of strengths to the team. Stevens, a 6-foot-6 wing, shines on the defensive end, thanks in large part to his impressive 6-foot-9 wingspan, strength, and ability to defend perimeter players as they drive to the basket. His defensive versatility will be a valuable asset for Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla. Moreover, Stevens brings a gritty and energetic style of play that is sure to resonate with both the team and its fan base.

However, one area of concern is Stevens’ 3-point shooting, as he has a career average of just 28.1% on 1.1 attempts from beyond the arc. This may not align with Mazzulla’s offensive strategy, but Stevens compensates for it by being an effective rebounder.

Shams: Boston Celtics sign wing Lamar Stevens to last open roster spot

Stevens, mainly seen as a defensive specialist, will compete with the likes of Oshae Brissett, Jordan Walsh, and Sam Hauser for minutes on the wing this season.

The Boston Celtics have reportedly filled their final remaining open roster spot according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, who reports that free agent wing “Lamar Stevens has agreed to a deal” with the Celtics the season after Stevens “established himself as a defensive presence” with the Cleveland Cavaliers, starting in 25 of the 62 contests he played for the Cavs in 2022-23.

Stevens, (no relation to team president Brad Stevens) a 26-year-old, 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in around 18.1 minutes per game with Cleveland last season, shooting 44.8% from the floor overall, 31.6% from beyond the arc on limited attempts, and 70.2% from the free throw line.

The Philadelphia native played his college ball at nearby Penn State for the Nittany Lions and went undrafted in the 2020 NBA draft before being picked up by the Cavs as a two way player.

Stevens, mainly seen as a defensive specialist, will compete with the likes of Oshae Brissett, Jordan Walsh, and Sam Hauser for minutes on the wing this season if he makes the regular season roster. MassLive’s Brian Robb reports Stevens’ contract is partially guaranteed, with the Pennsylvanian expected to compete for a roster spot at camp

The signing seems to preclude a return of veteran big man Blake Griffin, though a later-season addition could still be on the table if the Celtics elect to cut Stevens or one of their several players on partially- or non-guaranteed contracts.
