Bishop leaving Arkansas football to reunite with Odom in Vegas

LaDarrius Bishop is the latest former Arkansas defensive back to decide on UNLV for 2024.

LaDarrius Bishop was looking for a change of scenery, and decided to settle on Sin City.

The Ashdown native, who played under Barry Odom for three seasons before Odom took the UNLV head coaching job, will be joining the Rebels for the 2024 season, it was announced Wednesday.

Bishop is a part of a small nucleus of former Arkansas defensive backs who have elected to rejoin Odom in the desert after he won 9 games in 2023 and made it to the Mountain West Championship game before losing to Boise State and then losing to Kansas in a bowl game.

Malik Chavis and Jalen Catalon have both made their intentions to transfer to UNLV as well.

In 2023, Bishop only saw snaps primarily on special teams after battling injuries for much of 2022.

He only has the one year of eligibility left that was awarded to him because of being on the Razorbacks during the 2020 COVID campaign.

Razorbacks football loses a second player to torn ACL

Arkansas quarterback Kade Renfro will miss rest of 2022 after tearing his ACL.

Kade Renfro was competing for the back-up job to KJ Jefferson before a knee injury sidelined him in December. Now the Ole Miss transfer has suffered another setback.

Renfro, a walk-on who has yet to play for Arkansas, had season-ending surgery earlier in the week after tearing his ACL shortly after he had rehabilitated the initial injury. His timetable for return is unclear.

Coach Sam Pittman announced Monday that last year’s starting running back, Dominique Johnson, was lost for the rest of the season after re-injuring his hurt knee from December, too, also with a torn ACL. Pittman said Johnson should be ready for fall camp in 2023. Renfro would likely be on a similar timetable.

Pittman had announced earlier in the fall that last year’s starting cornerback LaDarrius Bishop would also miss the 2022 season with an injured knee.

Renfro began his college career at Ole Miss on scholarship before transferring to Arkansas last year to play as a walk-on.

Arkansas hosts No. 23 Liberty on Saturday with a chance to clinch bowl eligibility.

Hogs Depth Chart: Multiple corners vying for the two starting pots

Newly hired secondary and defensive coach Dominique Bowman says the cornerback room is very competitive.

Newly hired secondary and defensive coach Dominique Bowman says the cornerback room is very competitive.

Four players compete for the two starting positions and contribute to the Razorbacks’ pass coverage. Last season the Hogs finished in the middle of the pack in the country for passing defense despite having one of the worst pass rushes in the conference.

The Razorbacks’ secondary lost players, multi-year starter Montaric Brown going to the NFL, and Greg Brooks Jr — who was expected to be one of the projected starters — transferred to LSU earlier this year. However, Sam Pittman and Bowman are confident in the current group.

“You have Hud and certainly have Malik Chavis. Those two guys are running most of the time out there with the 1s,” Pittman said. “Dwight McGlothern, and then you got Day Day (Bishop). Those guys are right there, and who knows what’s going to happen in the next 21 days.”

The Hogs still bring back a group that can create opportunities in the secondary. However, we will likely see four players rotating in the starting roles.
